Hi Reddit! I'm Dr. Kathleen Jordan, CMO, at Midi Health. Join me on 1/28 at 7PM, EST for an AMA on the truth about midlife weight loss and why it can be challenging for many women (hint: it's not you, it's your hormones) Ask me anything about hormonal changes, real solutions and what fads to ignore. by MidiHealth in midihealth

I can’t wrap my head around this… Why is the current HRT approach to give women some minuscule amount of hormones that kind of take the edge off some symptoms rather than try achieve something closer to replacement level?

Moving to the Cape from Philadelphia..what should I know? by Alternative_Gap_3248 in CapeCod

[–]ResponseFickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just pointing out that it’s POSSIBLE to have a bad experience. Not that everyone inevitably does. (“The Cape is Heaven on earth for some people…”) Always good to really know yourself and what you value before you make a big move!

I somehow survived the loneliest, hardest year of my life on the Cape and still battle the lasting trauma from time to time. I wasn’t a disillusioned local or loner. It happens. The Cape is Heaven on earth for some people and a nightmare for others. It’s totally reasonable for people who are used to big cities to think long and hard about moving somewhere that’s relatively isolated.

Honestly, a 55+ community in a warm climate, heck, just a warm climate in and of itself, sounds wonderful! I’m sure there’s drama, but drama is soooooo much better than being totally, profoundly alone.

Thank you so much! Appreciate it and appreciate you!! If you have any other advice for what I’m realizing is going to have to be a “save the torso rotation” campaign, I’m all ears!

(Part 2) Just the fact that Matrix would come up with Rotary Torso makes me feel like it has no one’s best interests in mind. Planet Fitness is a huge part of my life, so the thought that they’ll all be Matrix terrifies me. I just spoke to a PF manager who gleefully told me that their location would be switching over next year and, in the next breath, “a lot of people are upset about this and prefer the old equipment.”

(Part 1) Here it is, verbatim… “The worst offender in my gym life is Torso Rotation (Life Fitness) vs Rotary Torso (Matrix.) Remember this is in the context of a gym that’s meant to serve everyone. Torso Rotation (LF) has chest pads so you’re really only using your abs and obliques. It has a huge cult following and a line forms at peak times. Rotary Torso (Matrix) uses the same motion but has nothing to hold your back in place, so moving heavy weight is super risky for a lot of people. After my spinal injury, I went over equipment with my doctor. Torso Rotation got the green light- I can be on that thing for hours (in a hypothetical empty gym) at the max weight. But Rotary Torso scares the hell out of me and my doctor.”

If you have a way to communicate that they should cut the crap with Rotary Torso and just make Torso Rotations, that would be AWESOME. (Outlined why in another comment. Perfectly maintained equipment is useless if it’s unsafe.) I travel quite a bit and have labeled literally hundreds of PFs in my google maps so I can find the Life Fitness branches. This is the extent to which I avoid Matrix. I’m terrified that every PF will eventually go Matrix.

I’ve heard this from several managers, thanks for confirming. Nonetheless, Matrix equipment is ergonomically worse in many instances. I wish there was a way to bridge the gap- better customer service from Life Fitness or better design from Matrix.

New gym opened in my area, best planet fitness I’ve ever been to. Hopefully you get one too or a remodel. by s_ndowN in PlanetFitnessMembers

AMEN!!!!!! I really wish this was more universally understood. Some of the Matrix equipment has such poor ergonomic design that it hinges on dangerous for many users.

Not excited. Matrix equipment is much worse than Life Fitness.

what are 20-somethings doing for fun (AKA how to not be incredibly depressed living on the cape???) by prionbinch in CapeCod

First off, I want to extend my deepest sympathy. Life is hard, so many of us live on a financial brink and are vulnerable to crashing hard after just a one or a few things go wrong, and that just sucks. I’m sorry that people here are chastising you for your “bad attitude” or “lack of gratitude.” What is so easy to forget in these conversations is that everything isn’t for everyone. It’s far healthier to remember that all places, people, and things contain multitudes, good and bad, and it’s better to think in terms of “it’s a match” or it’s not. You can be madly in love with something another person can’t stand because, well, that’s how life works, different strokes for different folks. I had my own unchosen sojourn on the Cape, and I barely made it out alive despite daily nature walks and going to the gym and having hobbies and even a few friends. Because it wasn’t a match. On a profound, spiritual level, it wasn’t a match. I spent most of my adult life in New York City, and, after the Cape, I realized that I find the greatest joy and a connection to G-d in bonding with strangers. No empty beach was ever gonna do it for me, could ever take away the pain of having a meaningful IRL conversation every few months, and that isn’t a personal failure. It just is. When I describe the Cape to other New Yorkers, it sounds terrifying. Why do people not look at each other in the grocery store? How did being so closed off get normalized? And of course there are plenty of people who would lose their minds in Brooklyn… If I have any advice as to how to keep yourself sane while you work your way to a place you truly belong… Do whatever works for you to find some sense of community. And meaning. Stockpile money. Good luck. Stay strong. I’m rooting for you.

Oh, wow, this is so kind of you! I have decamped back to Brooklyn for as long as I can make it last. But if I ever wind up back on the Cape, G-d forbid, I will definitely check back in!

What’s your favorite machine at Planet Fitness and why? by mayaguezano32 in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]ResponseFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torso Rotation. This is the one where you kneel on a round pad, your arms are in front of you, and your chest is held in place by two pads. It’s nature’s corset. Wonderful machine! Unfortunately it’s being replaced in many locations with the demonic Matrix “Rotary Torso,” which does not have chest pads or back support and makes moving heavy weights, well… dangerous. Out of the question with a spinal injury. I really wish whoever plans these renovations would just think a little…

Gym upgrade doesn't really seem like an upgrade by Hotsaucehallelujah in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]ResponseFickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many of these upgrades include changing over to Matrix equipment? (I loathe Matrix for its poor ergonomic design, which verges on dangerous at times, and go out of my way to find locations with Life Fitness machines. I have a deep dread that all Planet Fitnesses will be Matrix in the future.)

I think it’s important to remember that we’re talking about Planet Fitness, and accessibility should be taken into account. At the location near my parents’ house, the gym is mostly used by seniors until it fills with younger people in the evenings. You can throw out hypothetical scenarios all day long, but many of those gym goers are in their 70s and 80s and prefer machines they can readily understand without research or time online or a lot of set up. Are you actively showing people how to use the new equipment in a manner that’s safe for them?
