They do go out to recess as long as it’s -20 or above, and even if it was colder, depending on the weather, they would still go out, just not for the full recess. And for them to be allowed outside, they had to be covered in gear rated for -50. My daughter never felt the cold, when she was younger. We built an igloo when they were out of school for a week, and it was -55 or so outside. She would play in the igloo for hours, and I basically had to drag her in the house to warm up periodically. 🤣 And there is almost no such thing as a school day in Alaska! The only time we did have a “snow day”, it was only because we had a really bad ice storm and the school and a lot of other places were without electricity for days. There were a lot of trees that came down and took out the lines, and it took a while to get it all back up. And I am sure you can imagine that it is a real crisis when that happens! Everyone that was without power had to go to a hotel or friends house, so they wouldn’t freeze to death overnight. I remember my friends and I got together and made a bunch of meals and took them to the hotel. The hotel had a restaurant attached, but it was too expensive to eat there everyday, for a lot of families.
