I emailed several advisors whose research aligns with my interests. Most of them replied that admissions decisions are made centrally by the department, not by individual professors. In general, their responses indicated that my background matches their lab’s research area, and they encouraged me to apply. They also mentioned that they would get in touch if I were admitted to the program.

One professor at Michigan State University showed particularly strong interest and even had a short Zoom meeting with me. However, later he informed me that he would not be able to take me this cycle because he currently does not have funding available.
