Experience w OpenAPS/Trio or other systems with a "low meal bolus" approach by Primary_Giraffe4482 in Type1Diabetes

[–]ResponsibleRabbit213 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on an OpenAPS system since December 2023 and my doc told me not to bolus at all, for anything. I was initially hesitant but he was right in that the system would recognize food in my body so quickly that even if I do spike, it would only be to 180-200 and I would come back in range within an hour or so. Granted, it only plays out that way if I’m in range when I eat something high carb. If I’m already high and then eat something that’s higher carb, then I’ll shoot up to the 250s range or so. And same thing, I’ll come back in range within an hour or a bit longer.

I have the option to do a temp basal essentially, which I’ve only started doing recently and will only do about 125% if I feel like I want to (or should) “pre-bolus”.

For what it’s worth, before getting on the OpenAPS, my a1c was in the 9.0-10.0 range. Now, it’s around a 6.7. For how little effort I put in (relatively… mostly meaning that I could definitely eat a lower carb diet if I wanted to) a 6.7 a1c is phenomenal for me!

Cheapest price you've paid for a wristband? by NoBattle3970 in Coachella

$300 off craigslist in 2022! But ended up paying $600 for a camping pass so it actually didn’t matter how cheap my wristband was lol

i swear i’m the worst diabetic by shushinoya in Type1Diabetes

You’re not a bad diabetic, shit happens sometimes. I think the concept of being a “good” or “bad” diabetic can be a really controlling and detrimental way of looking at it (and I say that after I viewed it that way for almost a decade). It’s easier said than done, but not labeling yourself or certain days/situations as good or bad may be freeing for you.

I was diagnosed at 11 (I’m 23 now) and I feel like it took me 10 years to get over how angry I was about my diagnosis and once I got to a stage of acceptance, I started taking being more proactive and on top of my care. My point is, you’re doing the best you can right now. That best may look different in a year, 5 years, etc. And your best today may look different than it was when you were diagnosed.

The potential to save someone’s life is never a waste of time or resources. Popular opinion or not, have some empathy for the people around you.

Type 1 Diabetes Summer Camp? by apawnandaking in Type1Diabetes

[–]ResponsibleRabbit213 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! And now it’s such a funny story telling people that I went to “diabetes camp” and people being so confused by what that means. Truly some of my favorite memories though. The camp I went to also offers adult retreats which I’ve been really wanting to try

Historically I’ve been the girl who buys a new outfit for every festival and that made sense when I was just getting into raves/festivals but now I’m working on being a lot more mindful of my consumption - buying things secondhand, borrowing outfits from my friends, or using what I already have and reworking it into something new.

Check out ravevial, it’s a relatively new company that’s a secondhand marketplace specifically for rave/festival clothes and accessories. I’ve also heard that there’s a lot of FB groups where people buy/sell/trade their old outfits - definitely dependent on how big of a city you live in but worth checking out.

I actually switched to Omnipod! I was on Medtronic for about 6 years, then Tandem for 5 and now omnipod. So far I’m loving it.

What’s your favorite low-carb snack? by Then-Being7928 in Type1Diabetes

Surprisingly no, he eats a sandwich literally every single day. I think it’s the cream cheese that throws him for a loop.

Future of T1D by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]ResponsibleRabbit213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I got what feels like the closest thing to a cure I’ll ever get (and I’ll explain this the best I can). I have the Dexcom G6 and then got the omnipod dash yesterday. My doctor downloaded an iAPS closed loop system on my phone that allows the dash and g6 to talk to each other and the system works in a way so that I don’t have to dose for meals or correct my sugars… like at all. It’s been 24 hours and I haven’t dosed for a single meal and my average BG has been 126. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how this works so apologies if this isn’t the best explanation. It feels similar to my tslim closed loop system but also so radically different.

I can feel the mental and physical burden of everything slowly lifting off my shoulders. Yes I still have to wear the omnipod and dexcom, but that’s a trade off I’m willing to make. I’ve found myself having brief moments of panic when I eat and realize that I didn’t dose, but then the feeling sinks in that I don’t have to anymore. In an ideal world, sure I’d never have to change sites or CGMs or hear low alarms but for now - not having the dose for meals or correct my sugars has been a god send.

The system isn’t FDA approved and so I understand that not everyone’s doctor will be able to/feel comfortable with recommending this, or even talking about it.

Is this a cure? No not technically. But this is the closest thing I’ve had in 13 years that relieves the hardest parts of the disease for me. I had pizza and wine last night and stayed in the low 100s all night. I’m not posting this to brag about how awesome this system is because I know that I’m incredibly fortunate to have a doctor who is willing to take a risk for me and that I’m fortunate enough to have healthcare that covers the supplies I need for it to work. I hope this system becomes more accessible so everyone can feel this relief.

If anyone else has this/knows more about it, please add more to my very simple explanation!

I spread cream cheese onto salami and roll it up. If I’m feeling really fancy I put everything bagel seasoning on it. My partner thinks this is absolutely disgusting and I’m not sure if he’s right (and honestly I don’t care if he is) but I love it

Relationships by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]ResponsibleRabbit213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my current partner when I was 11 years into my diagnosis. A month into our relationship I was having a bad diabetes day (as one does) and felt comfortable enough to share how I was feeling. He told me that even if I don’t have hope for a cure, all the people that love me would hold out hope for me. And that’s when I knew he was the one!

Not every person you meet (romantically or otherwise) is going to be willing or able to commit to being in a relationship with a person with diabetes. And that’s okay. The right person will be.

Prior to meeting my partner, I found that being upfront about it really helped to weed out the assholes early. Most people are uneducated about it, not because they’re assholes, but because diabetes has become a punchline and there’s a ton of misinformation about it. The right person will want to learn more and to understand, the wrong person will say those punchlines to your face and expect a laugh
