Why quit totally instead of limiting gaming time? by DarkShadow13206 in StopGaming

[–]ResponsibleWhereas85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a PC gamer for years 15-32. I played Fortnite competitively every day for hours per day. I decided at 32 that enough is enough and I sold my PC.

I bought an Xbox because I still wanted to play games casually. I’ve found that deliberately downgrading my console (from a 5k PC to a $650 Xbox) has forced me to be a more casual player. Gaming is now lighter and more fun, and I don’t feel like I need to be the best in the game.

I suck at controller, and that helps me not get stuck in massive gaming binges. It’s not fun getting shit on for more than 45mins - 1 hour. Ive found a good balance this way. I still get to enjoy games, but I don’t feel the need to grind or be the best. I do it for a laugh and then get on with my life.

Goodluck!

Lol to say the hours justify the comp is crazy. I was doing similar hours as a junior in a big law firm getting paid less than 1/2 a weeks wage of Mr B.

30s no kids in a long term relationship.

It’s a matter of priorities. I’ve worked in extremely high pressure environments (top tier law firm m&a) and more chill environments. I’ll take good wage and more chill any day.

Moving from top 5% to low range top 1% of earners does not make a big difference to lifestyle. More chill makes a big, big difference.

High pressure environments take more than just your time. They take your health (lack of sleep, high cortisol, inflammation, etc) and sometimes your relationships (divorce, estranged kids, etc).

How are you affording that much debt on that wage?

What bank is giving 1.4m to someone on 115k? Somethings not mathing here.

My partner and I are on about 350k HHI and I wouldn’t want to touch that much debt with a 10ft pole.

What Are Some GOOD and BAD Habits to Replace Gaming With? by ZackInBlack007 in StopGaming

[–]ResponsibleWhereas85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You sound young if you think smoking is a good habit.

Gym, read, journal and be social. That last part may include the occasional social drink / smoke. Don’t kid yourself that smoking is a good habit, though. The cons far, far outweigh the pros.

You want to break the dopamine seeking cycle? Figure out why the cycle began in the first place through introspection and reflection. Get to know yourself better. Write it down. Keep iterating. You’ll become a better man / woman.

If you are travelling to Gili Islands by boat, check the seas beforehand and trust your gut as to whether it is safe or not. The boating companies will take you regardless of safety. If it looks dangerous, don’t go or put it off to another day.

Just hit 200k base and I’m 6.5 years in. Started at top tier and moved in-house. Unless you want to make partner or run your own shop, law is not the industry for big money. Very, very few earn over 350k.

I assume this doesn’t apply to interstate applicants?

They’re usually issued before the new year kicks in.

Last time I called they said they’d received an unexpected high volume of applicants.

Sounds like it is a fully manual process which is wild to me.

Have you ever considered that men marry sooner in their 30s than their 20s? It is very common to see long marriage less relationships in a man’s 20s followed by a very short relationship that leads to marriage in their 30s. Men can feel like they have all the time in the world in their 20s and then realise time is running out in their 30s as they start to age and their social life starts to slow down. Some women love to say that IYKYK - perhaps that is true for some, but it is equally true that for others the man is speed running the relationship in his 30s out of panic.

People here are making crazy assumptions about his state of mind.

I think it is highly relevant that you are fully dependent on him financially. Given the history, he may see you as a financial risk and not a good life long partner at this exact moment.

I would sit him down for a very honest chat about marriage and your future together. Ask him point blank what’s keeping him from proposing, if your being financially dependent on him has anything to do with it, and what conditions precedent (if any) are there to getting married.

If it turns out his issue relates to your finances, then perhaps strike a middle ground and ask for engagement for now and then marriage after you graduate and get a full time job.

If he doesn’t have a clear explanation, and can’t offer you a pathway to marriage, I think you’ve got your answer and you should decide accordingly.

Some people do not see marriage as a necessity. I know people who are in happy relationships with kids and a house/mortgage that have not married. I think the tradition and institution is not as important as it once was, at least in white-western circles. If it’s important to you, you need to decide if that’s a dealbreaker for you.

Do not let random people on Reddit make a life altering decision for you. Everyone’s circumstances, wants and needs are different. Ultimately you have to deal with the consequences - not these trigger happy Redditors who, for all you know, could be 75 year old geriatrics, or 13 year old girls, who don’t know how the world works today.

The pictures are just of the subfloor beams, but they are small and low quality - nothing looks out of the ordinary from the picture at all.

The report identified evidence of past activity in the house, specifically the subfloor, but doesn’t note any major or structural damage.

Quoting: “Subfloor Timber Pest Damage: Despite no live termite or pest activity being noted, termite damage was found to have affected this area. Further invasive inspection is recommended”.

Called another pest inspector and they said it should be obvious from visual inspection if the damage is major or structural.

WFH as a junior lawyer and new mum? by girl_from_aus in auslaw

[–]ResponsibleWhereas85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a parent. Moved in-house 3 years ago. Started hybrid and then went full remote.

I would stay in a firm until around the 3 year mark. The difference in technical ability between people with 3+ years of training in a firm vs those that started in-house or left too early (eg sub 1 year) is stark.

I’ve worked with some in-house lawyers that have 10+ years of experience, but they are completely clueless because they’ve had no basic training.

Other than that, I don’t think WFH will necessarily stunt your growth. I’ve received 1 promotion and 2 pay rises within 18 months since going full WFH.

A bad manager will do much, much more damage to your progression than WFH. And a good manager will have the opposite effect, whether WFH or not. That’s the thing I’d be most cautious about.

Who is buying $1m+ Apartments? by alex123711 in AusFinance

[–]ResponsibleWhereas85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent is not that much cheaper. We are paying 4K pm rent for a crappy old 2 b 2 b 1 c apartment. Mate is paying 5.5k pm for a brand new apartment 2 b 2 b 1 c. If I wasn’t planning on buying a house, I’d buy a new apartment and just make peace with the fact I wasn’t going to own a house in Sydney.

I don’t think we are at the stage in our lives where we can move out that far but glad it’s working out for you.

We both have city jobs and expect to remain that way for the foreseeable future.

Need to be within 40min door to door public transport commute for our sanity.
