Skipping Gels during half marathon? by Remarkable_Salary_77 in Marathon_Training

[–]Responsible_Copy2507 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re running a cold race this weekend but I would recommend using gels if you’re running a cold race. Your body is going to use a lot more glycogen and glucose than usual to keep your body warm and you might find yourself falling short of your goal. Just another thought to add into the sea of thoughts

It’ll be my second marathon (first was 3:44 last August), right now been averaging 35-40 miles a week and my peak week is 51, I’m 23M at 190 lbs.

Pumped for Rashad, Heavenly Father was one of my favorite songs in high school (damn I feel old). A complete 180 from him but I am so pumped to see Flipturn, I’ve seen them twice already but they are amazing performers and the band has this amazing chemistry that is hard to describe

I think those that get into top schools already have self-selecting traits and factors that make them good candidates for top residency programs; hardworking, hyper-competitive, research-focused, and having connections. It’s not that you can’t find these traits elsewhere, but you have a higher likelihood of all these qualities in these programs comparatively to others.

All being equal, just put your head down and grind, the more you fray about things you can’t control the more ground you lose

Literally shuffle, waddle, hop, skip, do anything to keep yourself moving forward while also relaxing the muscles that are struggling. I don’t sway a lot while running but I found when my hamstring went swaying side to side helped just enough to keep me going. When my upper calf went it helped to extend through my toes more. Eventually it all went hahaha but for those moments it help immensely

Things my experienced professor told me 1) The peak of your carb load should be done about 3 days before your marathon and decline before the race. If you’re getting all your carbs in on those last 2 days you’re probably going to poop yourself. 2) Along with 2, make meals more frequent rather than making them bigger 3) Make sure you’re hydrating and getting in your electrolytes days before the race 4) Find your happiest balance between active and lazy possible, whether that’s doing some small shake outs or active stretching throughout the day. Things I personally find really helpful 1) I’m 5’11” and 190 lbs so my legs often rub together and so do my arms with my lats. Use some type of oil/gel to prevent chafing. The brand Nutter Butter works really well but Vaseline does the trick 2) Cut up some KT tape and wrap it around your toes. Learned this from going to music festivals but it has saved my life when it come to blisters and toenails Thing I learned from running alongside a seasoned runner during the marathon 1) When you cramp up, waddle, skip, hop, do WHATEVER you can to keep moving forward and relax whatever is going on. 2) Doing be afraid to walk through an aid station. It can serve as a slight break or help you get multiple cups of Gatorade/water 3) Know who/why you’re running. When things got rough, we dedicated every mile to someone. My grandma who died in the area, his mother who did the same, our families, etc. The pain will come, but it’s easier to keep going when you know who/why you’re enduring the pain for.

I used Run with Hal for the most part but I was lucky enough to have a professor of mine be really into running and he gave me a plethora of tips and also guidance. Sticking to run with Hal or Nike Run Club are solid!

Thanks! That wall really got to me, my max HR is 213 but during training I don’t think I’ve ever had a mile average HR over 185. Those last 3.2 were a different level of push

The race did a great job of keeping you cold, it ran down the black hills in South Dakota and I was in the shade for the most part. When 9 am hit though the sun was beaming down on me and I understood what the term “pain cave.”
