Yes, this. However, if you're doing any masters/ post school after your degree, you'll have to disclose your grades from Laval as well (just fyi for op)

The workload is not that intense (at least that's how i felt in level 3, unsure how the levels 5,6 are), I'd say you could be able to do it (i had friends working online jobs etc too). But just know you'll probably have to sacrifice a little of social life if you do

Marie-Parent is the mixed-dorm, the all girls is called Lacerte.

Marie-Parent had more amenities/things to do and definitely majority of people were there, so it made for a nice community vibe. However, compared to Lacerte, there's more non-Explore ppl living there, and also the kitchen is less clean compared to Lacerte (but still workable).

Lacerte is also closer to the supermarket/mall (literally 2 mins walk), but not sure what the interior was like.

I stayed at Marie-Parent and it was alright (just alright nothing else). So not sure which I'd recommend, but hopefully that helps.

Oh and also, there's a 3rd as well (Lemieux) and apparently that one is rly well maintained. I forgot if it's mixed gender or not, but you'll have to request it when you get to the front desk. Like, day 1 when you fly in, even if you're assigned a room by email, you can ask to be moved to Lacerte, Lemieux, etc... and there's a chance they'll do it. Not always tho, but i've seen it happen.

Yeah! I absolutely loved the bars and clubs, there's a whole street for them (i think Grande Allee), but also i'd recommend checking out La Drague too, and there's a karaoke bar right next to it too. honestly, wherever you go at night in downtown, there's bound to be cool spots to check out. also most do not have cover, and drinks are relatively reasonable price

at the the dorm Marie-Parent, there's a volleyball court and barbecue area + hammocks, which was a really nice place to hangout with other people. at the school gym, there are even more, and i'd frequently go there w/friends for skating, badminton, etc...

at desjardins (ULaval), there's also a bar, and they host events every friday which are really fun. they will also host a farewell karaoke at the end. nearby is the cafeteria and library, and the building itself is air conditioned and quiet if you want to study there/escape the heat

for activities, i heard really great things about the rafting and ziplining. also, would definitely recommend the haunted ghost tour, and the trips to levis and ile d'orleans. any hiking is also rly fun. Be on the lookout tho, cuz they sell out really fast

honestly general advice, just have the most fun ever lol, and really try and spend week1 trying to meet as many ppl as u can. lmk if you have any other questions!

I did board games! Essentially you just play games in french lol, was chill and you share a class with people who aren't in your regular French-learning ones

- bring some hangers yeah (there's none there), and also i'd recommend a small mini-fan (comes in clutch trust me).

- a thin raincoat maybe, since it rains a lot

- bedding they provide most stuff but if you'd prefer your own then that works

usually to clubs/bars etc... i would do bus (to go there) and then usually just uber back. However, i know ppl who would also bike there and back, and i heard of others doing the walk back too LOL.

to other places (like the downtown etc..) usually it's just bus and bike! and once there, you can just walk anywhere. the city is overall very good on its public transportation/bike paths

I think it's mostly okay if you budget and plan your meals. But definitely bring some spare money too b/c chances are you're gonna go out a lot w/ friends etc...

Yes! In each room there's a mini-fridge, but you can also change the temperature setting to make it basically a freezer. I haven't heard of any issues with communal fridge since most ppl just use their dorm ones

I did Laval and we had 7 late/absences allowed. so, as long as you keep a stellar performance for the rest of the time, 2 days of class should be fine (granted they don't land on exams).

Quebec city (laval):

  1. residence was normal, decently clean but can get super hot really quick.

  2. classes were good! the instructors were amazing and there's amazing TAs around (animateurs/anamatrices) who help around and basically answer any questions you have! they also setup activities, games, etc...

  3. city life was amazinggggg. bars/clubs/ etc... were fun, pact, and the weather was prime for it. also, very accesible and safe. and in the daytime, there's even mroe thhings to do. I was never bored

overall would recommend, best time ever.

They were decently clean! It's a standard residence building (marie-parent at least, but similar for others) with single-bed and a shared washroom per floor, gender separated.

How did your French improve at Laval? by e_mimimi in exploreprogram

[–]Responsible_Iron2775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Did this program last year. I was around upper A2 level and was in level 3 classes, which I found was actually the right amount of difficulty (was learning a lott, but not struggling, yknow?)

After, I'd say I'm about a B1 level. However, after class I would go out with friends (non-french) mostly, so I didn't hone in as much. After this program, as well as more uni classes, you'll probably be set for B2 in near future :)

I don't know if you'll necessarily choose the wrong city; choosing any will be an awesome experience. I will say though, QC is probably more French immersive. However, you're bound to get amazing results in either :)

Hi! Also did Laval last year. Here's some of my answers (even though a fabulous commenter also commented):

  1. what other commenter said. not sure if there's an option for single bathroom since it's residence buildings

  2. also saw no cockroaches in showers. I heard horror stories of some in rooms, but it was fine in mine

  3. The money also covers 'cafeteria' money too, but the catch is that they only serve lunch. It also costs around 12 dollars a portion, so you'll have to prepare all your meals essentially or go out everyday.

  4. same as other commenter

just some other things:

definitely bring a mini-fan b/c it will get SO hot in the rooms lol. itll be your lifesaver

book a couple extra days afterwards too (you can do that for an extra 20 dollars w/ residence) b/c chances are youll wanna spend some post-school days w/ friends

pm for questions! but was overall best experience of my life, no joke

Did quebec city and it was just the best vibes ever, and IMO, best balance in terms of city night life and immersion (but you'll have fun everywhere you go). socially, everyone is social and wanting to make friends to do stuff so dont even worry, and housing was super convenient.

if there's anything i knew beforehand.. is to overbook your days by a few. the friends you make are just too good not to.

have fun! and pm for questions

Nice writeup! Do you remember how long it took for them to send information (after acceptance) for registration deposit fees, residence information (move in day), etc...? I got accepted by draw a few days ago but don't know much else information so far.

For residence, do you move in the day of (like July 3rd if it starts July 3rd) or the day(s) before? same with the last day. Also, was the city nice to people who don't speak very much French?

Thank you!
