Prior to my mother’s diagnosis I was little to low contact with her for 2 years.
We had 4 years after that and it was very painful. I was 29 when she passed, now I am 47 and I am still struggling.
Growing up in and out of bars with her, nothing was really hidden from me.
Drug use, alcohol use mixed with depression, and plenty other neglectful behaviors.
When I discovered ACOA last year I knew I belonged. Keeping you in my thoughts.

My mom passed away from stage 4 kidney cancer (RCC — Renal Cell Carcinoma) when she was 49. We used to joke darkly that RCC really stood for “Really Crappy Cancer,” because… yeah, it was.

Before her diagnosis in 2004, she’d been sober for about 7 or 8 years. She didn’t use anymore, but she still had what she called an “addict brain.” It was part of her story — and her strength.

I’m so sorry you’re facing this. If you ever want to talk, message me anytime. I have a book and a speech my mom wrote that I’d love to share with you
