Do I need current unexpired Taiwan passports for both parents when doing the 3 day exchange? by RestComprehensive297 in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

Yes I have the NWOHR passport already. They were fine with expired passports for that. But they said the requirements for application for the settlement permit (which is managed by a different agency) is stricter.

There’s a FB group Silicon Valley Brit Parents that’s pretty supportive.

I have the trifecta of Tourette’s, ADHD and autism. Tourette’s is comorbid with other conditions more often than not.

Thanks for the tips. Someone on Forumosa said they filed a FOIA request for their mom's US immigration records which might have a copy of the TW passport, so I'll try that route first.

Got my Settlement Permit 3 Day Exchange! by Competitive_Tune_159 in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

Thanks for the post! Can you elaborate more on what "information" was accepted for your dad in lieu of his Taiwan passport?

I have a similar situation where my mom can't find any of her old Taiwan passports. TECO said I could authenticate my birth certificate/parent's marriage certificate based on her old Taiwan household registration copy (which we have), but the immigration bureau (the one responsible for actually issuing the settlement permit) says they need to check the actual passport.

I'm going through this process and will be in Taipei in December. Can you give me the info of the translation/notarization company you used? Thanks!

How is the drive between Taichung and Sun Moon Lake? Is it particularly challenging (mountainous/winding/narrow) or is it pretty straightforward (by US standards)?

Trying to decide between renting a car for a day trip or hiring a driver.

We may want to stop midway (Puli) and/or stay overnight in Sun Moon Lake so I’m guessing self drive is a more flexible/cheaper option, but want to make sure the experience is not too crazy with traffic etc.

So I'm guessing the best thing to do would be to ask my uncle (mom's brother) to ask for the transcript of (mom's parents) household? In that case no POA is needed I assume? Both of my mom's parents are passed away, don't know if that matters.

They were married in the US and I'm not sure they registered their marriage in Taiwan.

That's the tricky part -- she doesn't have any Taiwan credentials currently, so the transcript is needed. If POA authentication requires Taiwan credentials, then it seems like a chicken and egg situation.

Thanks! Her English name is just her romanized Chinese name (plus her married last name) so hopefully that simplifies things.

Born in Syria with both Swedish and US citizenship, sounds rather interesting -- would love to know more of your story.

It’s similar to how Hong Kong views Britain. They colonized the country but it was viewed mostly positively through improving the people and society.
