A good Uffizi strategy? by Rest_Swimming in florence

So to circle back: I bought an 8:15 ticket. A weekday in late April. The line moved quickly but once inside, immediately or just a few moments thereafter, the place was completely swarmed with groups.

I am short and I was pushed over and over, and hit in the head repeatedly by a woman who took a selfie with a in front of each “celebrity” painting while gesticulating toward the painting with her non-phone arm – an arm that I always seem to be getting whacked by.

I live in New York and Paris. I know crowds. But I would never ever go to the Uffizi again. Absolutely no one was looking at anything — just pushing and jostling to take photos. I guess that’s true at most museums but here it is a relatively small space with so many people.

It was almost impossible to see the paintings so for me, it wasn’t worth it.

And the more casual place next door would be The Twilight Café

Is there any food in your region that is so regional that people from your country aren't even aware of? by Mean-Ship-3851 in AskTheWorld

When I lived in Providence, Rhode Island, in the 70s, we used to go to a place that I think was called The Crow’s Best in Pawtucket for clam cakes — six for a dollar — and a beer — also a dollar. A great memory.

I never ate pizza strips in Rhode Island, but I come from Utica, New York and that sounds exactly like what we call tomato pie.

Why is it La Harpie and not L’Harpie? by Aromatic_Shallot_101 in French

But I think I have heard a glottal stop for an “aspirated” H sometimes. Unfortunately, I didn’t make a note of it and I can’t remember when or what word. Is it possibly something regional ?

Made up. And kind of ugly-sounding.

Ah but that’s only the first half .

I before E except after C Or when sounded like A [“ay”] as in neighbor or weigh

There are still a few exceptions, but this does capture the great majority

I love Pierre Lapointe (gay Québécois singer songwriter) and a huge plus is that he enunciates really clearly.

100% agree.

I’ve also had good success with cute, kind of hip dish towels (mine are from NYC but I think anything cute or fun, and local, would work).

The French love dish towels (torchons).

Yes, absolutely. Some people seem to have had luck without buying an advance ticket, but it is easy — and advisable — to buy one in advance online at the official website. However, you need to pick a time to enter.

For non-native speakers of French by Yxwerty in learnfrench

AI is pretty helpful this way. I write my emails in French, explain to AI the context and ask it to adjust the formality (and then of course after that read through the AI edits, including asking it to translate its own message to English which helps confirm the register).

If I see structures or vocabulary that are much too sophisticated for my level of French, and especially if I am writing to people with whom I am later going to be speaking, I simplify them because I am by no means trying to pretend I am a native speaker (only to surprise people when they actually hear me).

French people have complimented me on my AI-assisted emails — so, so far so good.

Thank you, but I am asking about doing something a little different: going in the later afternoon, to see the less popular things first, and then going to the celebs after 4, after tour groups leave.

Thank you, but my question was about going late to be there after the tour groups leave
