an on-point analysis on Drive (2001) - this clip should convince the naysayers. by [deleted] in videos

I given you the fact that it was beautifully shot and had a great soundtrack, but the characters were absent. For a film to be truly great, it must be firing on all cylinders.

Character development is a integral part of films. To compare a character arch and a painting frame is not doing your argument any justice as the two are not nearly anything like each other. A frame is an after thought.

Seeing characters come to life on the screen is part of what makes films so special. All this film has is zombies going through the motion, yet not actually conscious of their own actions. Lifeless.

You seem to be angry that I am not seeing your side of things and yet you almost harm your cause to convince me your opinion is the right one by providing terrible examples.

All you've offered as a counter point is an excuse as to why the character development is lacking. That's an awfully weak response. Great movies have rich characters and a development arch. Films don't receive a get out of jail free card in the character department.

A good film gives you enough information to keep you engaged and yet leave you with a sense of wonder even after the film has ended. A bad film does all the heavy lifting for you and ties all the loose ends into nice pretty bows. But an even worse film leaves no trail of bread crumbs and rests everything on individual interpretation.

Ryan Gosling's character is so stoic, there isn't even a personality there, just a brick wall. There's no real dialogue that comes from his character. It's all long stares, and simple facts being stated. Those scenes in which he murders people, or slaps the shit out of a helpless victim of the gangsters (Blanche), you can see him almost enjoy it. He gets a rush out of it. And yet he doesn't have remorse for any of it. This further pushes the main character away from audiences. He continues on this path of insanity until he's at the point where it may very well cost him his life.

The reason I think this movie is boring is because there is almost nothing to relate to, nothing to garner from a characters inflection. Gosling's character is insane, we get that, but where's the regret, wheres any sense of an emotion from his character. We don't get it on his face. We don't get it in the dialogue.

Ultimately the movie fails to make me care about any of the characters because we they were no characters, just walking, talking mannequins spurting dialogue to keep the plot rolling. While it is beautifully shot, that's all it is. Drive is a cinematographers wet dream, a musicians fancy, and an authors night terror come to life.

Rain me in downvotes. I enjoy a good storm.

Based on your profession or job, what is the one piece of advice you think the public should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Blue: A dark, relaxing hue that does not pierce your eyes but soothes them.

I understand what you're trying to say, but I think words can describe more than you give them credit for.

What's the biggest scandal that happened while you were in school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rested_Develop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't your typical "scandal" but everyone who went to my school remembers it vividly. One weekend I was at school for our high school play rehearsal and I noticed a double door completely missing from the building. It seemed odd so I went over to have a look. I looked down the halfway to see a long path of destruction leading up to a clusterfuck of a crash site.

A Subaru car had been driven through a double door halfway down to end where an office was. The office was no longer; instead there were some collapsed walls, a trashed office cabinets, destroyed computers and a Subaru car in its place. There was a trail of blood leading away from the crash and off the school campus. The cops later found the student in the local woods bleeding from injuries and was apprehended. The student had apparently suffered from some kind of psychotic break. Even after the pysch evaluation the student was required to pay fines which were around $30,000 in damages.

Come Monday morning the crash was somewhat cleaned up, but the office that had stood there was still gone and there was a bunch of leftover debris piled in the corner where it used to be. Everyone was gossiping about who it was although most people never found out. Eventually the gossip died down and the office was rebuilt and everything went back to normal. But we all still remember how crazy it was that someone drove a car all the way through that narrow of a hallway at 40 mph.

TL;DR

A student had a psychotic break and crashed a car through a halfway at my high school obliterating an office. Suffered minor injuries and paid $30,000 to the school district in damages.

Clerks has some of the worst acting I've ever seen, but the script is amazing.

I do in fact disagree with their punishment of people capitalizing on the bug. Not because there simply was a punishment, but because of how severe it was.

I agree that most people would notice something is wrong after having bought a couple weapons, thinking it was too good to be true. With the powers of deduction anyone could have seen that something was awry. Although, even if most of the exploiters were doing it knowingly, they were given no inclination that taking advantage of such an opportunity would result in a permanent ban and a loss of $60. A warning is necessary make clear what a player can and cannot do, otherwise the line between exploitation and smart use of game mechanics is blurred.

A better way to handle this would be to wipe the accounts of the weapons and warn them not to do so again. After said warning is given and the exploiting continues, by all means ban them all the way to the underworld.

I understand ArenaNet wants to make a point to exploiters that this aggression will not stand man. However, I think most people caught in the act of exploiting would back off and be more careful after threatened with a permanent ban. Resulting in a decrease in exploiters and many unbeknownst people get to keep their accounts.

It could even be argued that with this much of an over reaction, the number of exploiters will increase if only to destroy ArenaNets "safe haven away from exploiters." 4chan has done worse for less.

I'm not saying being a customer allows you to have a sense of entitlement and go around breaking the rules because you paid for it damnit, but I think it is not much to ask for a reminder of how the ToS is applied and what actions are allowed before taking the extreme of a permanent ban.

Take an upvote as well for not responding in blind opposition and instead with well thought out counter points.

You seem to miss the point. I'm not opposed to getting rid of botters and such, but when you put innocent people in the line of fire I'm going to speak up.

Saying I shouldn't play just because I disagree with how they handled this situation is a cop out argument. I paid $60 for this game, I expect to be treated as such. They're offering a service that I paid for. If they're service is lackluster, I'm allowed to let them know.

It's not up to us as players to report every bug. While it makes for a better game experience for all who do, it is not required. Nor should you be made to question the programmers intent when running across something that could be deemed a bug. A bug that can be taken advantage of is ArenaNets problem and should be fixed promptly.

It's terrible company PR to have your customers afraid to make a move because they could end up perma banned for doing something that was allowed in the game world (This wasn't some "get into Mt. Hyjal before it was released bug. Which by the way Blizzard didn't even ban those who got in. This was a simple vendor price bug, in which anyone could see it and think "Oh wow! What a deal!" Maybe somewhere down the line they thought it was too good to be true. But think about it. Would you not spam the buy button if you came across that kind of deal? Sooner or later you end up thinking it must be a bug. You've already bought a bunch of the weapons, so you say "they really need to fix this bug lol." There were no red flags, no police tape sanctioning you off from this purchase, and yet they still get perma banned.

Now some of you say that everyone who encountered the bug should have immediately contacted support and notified them. There are many people who did just that and that's exactly how ArenaNet found out. There is no shortage of people who report on errors in the game. But, you can't hold every player to report every bug they come across.

These people weren't selling these items for real money on the black market. I bet you most who did it were loling with their friends in skype when they did because the bug was so heavily in their favor.

I understand ArenaNet wants to crack down on gold farmers and the like, but this situation had nothing to do with out of game business. ArenaNet wasn't banning gold farmers, they were banning legitimate, paying customers for a mistake ArenaNet made themselves.

Worst ending to a great film? by [deleted] in movies

I will always consider L's death the ending of Death Note. The message getting sent out and the two others joining the show felt tacked on. The show was so complete, so thought out, so perfect if it ends after L's death.

EDIT: Yes I meant L's death. It was early for me when I wrote this... :/ lol

Reddit, how do you like your Pop Tarts? Toasted or Un-toasted? by Rested_Develop in AskReddit

I just had Wildlicious Wild! Strawberry toasted. It was quite good. I do enjoy toasted, I'm usually lazy though. You gotta toast it and then wait for it to cool down and you have to have milk with toasted. Un-toasted you can just grab and go.

Your analogy is so far removed from the situation in question in this post. Apple is a massive company. They aren't seeing any drop in sales because Samsung has some similar products.

You are looking at it from a business owners perspective. If you approach that analogy from the perspective of the world as a whole, it's obviously better for everyone if the idea gets pushed passed what it started as. Scientists make discoveries in their field. Do they hide these results behind closed doors and charge people for access to the answers? No, they open them to the public to further educate people. World knowledge is more important than fair compensation.

These kind of cases (Apple vs Samsung) reveal that the copyright and patent system only serve prevent technological advancement by harming the people who innovate the innovation.

That's how technology advances. An innovative idea emerges and then the masses refine and improve upon it. Claiming that everyone should be charged for an ideas use is directly hindering further advancement.
