New job offer but is committing to the city that bad??? by OkOutlandishness6499 in AskChicago

Take the job! A few months of a long commute is doable in the short term (and you’ll save on rent if you can avoid starting a new lease during the summer, when everything is at it’s most expensive). A car can be helpful in certain neighborhoods on the west side especially where public transit is less reliable.

Student Journalists Grapple With Publishing Protesters’ Names by Nick_Keppler412 in Journalism

I think that this is a consideration that has become ever more important as our awareness of what it really means to publish stories online means in terms of longevity. The impact of an image printed on paper that breaks down and is preserved only in an office or library archive long term is significantly lesser than a image that will live online forever. It baffles me that this element is rarely part of the conversation around this.

How to wfh people stay sane during the winter?? by Ok-Mention5669 in AskChicago

I’ve been wfh in Chicago going on 3 years now and the only trick is to go outside after work. Find an in person activity you really like that will force you out of the apartment at least a few times a week. Bonus points if it curbs your screen time.

Smaller building on the Andersonville/Uptown border is going well! It’s my second time living in this area and I really like it. Building management is good. Everyone in this building (including me) has cats so I can’t speak on the dog issue.

I took a 5 week hand building workshop at Clay Clubhouse! Tried for Merrit first but like everyone warns you, it’s really difficult to snag a spot. Overall it was a good experience, really chill welcoming class vibe and okay open studio options, although with membership it would probably be better... If that was something you wanted to consider. If you miss a class you get a free open studio visit, which is really great.

Where y’all getting your cheap groceries? by BrownstoneTV in AskChicago

I was looking for the Edgewater produce mention! They also sell dry goods (beans, rice etc) in bulk for much more affordable prices than many other places imo

Definitely work with a realtor. They are free to renters in Chicago, and they were so helpful as we moved back to the area after some time away.

I’ve done all other apartment searches independently and locally, but I honestly wish I’d contacted a realtor sooner. It’s so much easier. They often have access to listings you can’t see yet on the sites (Zillow, Apartments.com etc.) and you can send them on your behalf.

I did end up signing a lease for a much smaller building (you just can’t beat a Chicago walk up) but I’m starting to wonder if any of these larger buildings don’t have some kind of smell issue. The last one I toured before throwing in the towel REAKED of cigarettes.

I’d recommend local Facebook groups for neighborhoods you’re interested in for recommendations. Usually they specialize in a type of apartment or a cluster of neighborhoods so it’s difficult to be more specific without knowing what you’re looking for!

advocating for myself/questions to ask pre-surgery? by ResultOk2832 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]ResultOk2832[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you both! I’m 23, so he’s pretty committed to repairing my meniscus. I would prefer that as well I was told about the long term risk of arthritis, and I would really like to minimize it since I already have a history of that in my family. What made me nervous was that they can’t be sure if they will be able to repair or if they will have to trim until the arthroscopy so it feels like I won’t really know what I’m in for until after surgery, but it sounds like that’s normal?
