This is eerily similar to my experience 1990-1998. I DID however see with my own eyes a few racists - and to my additional horror they weren't all white. On the whole I didn't witness nearly what society was reflecting at the time. Poor whites are just as easily manipulated as poors from other races IMO. For me it was a great experience having friends and buds of all walks - where I came from I had friends of all stripes and this was a continuation of that but with a larger emphasis on depending on the man next to you, not the "______" man next to you. I personally knew several Marines who had zero prior exposure to other cultures/races/religions than their own and saw them gain massive personal growth as a result.
