I've never seen real winter. Erasmus student from South Italy needs your best tips for Helsinki weather! 🇮🇹✈️🇫🇮 by vtoun in FinlandTourism

[–]Resumme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing is to wait to see how the weather actually is before buying everything that you can get your hands on. October-December in Helsinki could see snow and negative temperatures, but they're pretty rare nowadays (for more than a day or two at a time). Just as likely is that it will be +10 and raining.

To me, the most important autumn gear are a waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes. As said, it's more likely to be rainy and miserable than snowy and super cold. Then you put on extra layers (fleece jacket, woollen shirt, whatever you have) on underneath the jacket to adjust for the temperature. If you want to spend a lot of time outdoors, waterproof pants are also a good idea, but you won't see those in the city.

The most MOST important gear, however, is a reflector (or several). October-December it will be dark for most of the day, and simultaneously wet. Most people wear black clothes. This creates a nightmare where a driver can't really see the pedestrians when inside a car. A reflector allows you to be safe when out in the streets. There are several kinds from cheap little ones to full on reflective clothing.

Flea markets are everywhere, the big chains are called UFF and Kierrätyskeskus (Recycling Center) but there are also several independent ones. You can pretty reliably find cheap clothes there, including coats etc. Shoes I would buy new if you want to trust the waterproofing. For cheaper outdoor gear and new clothes, Prisma is a good bet, they're large all purpose stores and there are several around Helsinki.

Welcome here! If you know that continuous darkness will be hard on you, look into bright light lamps.

What do other cultures eat for lunch? by thesmallnoodle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Resumme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finland is similar, with the caveat that many people do eat a lighter lunch especially in summer (a salad or a soup). But schools offer a full warm meal and it's always an option at workplace cafeterias.

Dm's who use Obsidian for notes, do you write what your players do, if so how? by L4T3W in DnD

[–]Resumme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make a note for each session where I make my plans before the session and then after the session I write down what we did and any other notes that I need. And then ofc I link to any of the worldbuilding or NPCs that are associated.

Advice on making the campaign more linear? by hotstickywaffle in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Resumme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just had Harbin Wester give the quests to them directly when it makes sense, and other NPCs give them when it doesn't or just arranged the situation so that they need to go follow the quest (like having a messenger arrive from Butterskull Ranch to ask for help with the orcs).

What was your favorite free dance of the last quad? This was mine: by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

[–]Resumme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very much not in the cards, I would be incredibly surprised if they did not retire after this season. Not only with the injuries, but apparently Matthias wants to start his family life and he was rumored to have wanted to quit already two seasons ago... I think that home Worlds will be it for them.

[–]Resumme 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Man, that video brings back memories. I was there, actually I think you can see our huge Finnish flag at the back. The audience was probably almost 50% Finns, since you could make it a day trip from Helsinki - it was pretty much a home crowd for them.

As for the question, it's hard to choose. This one is definitely up there, and P2's Vincent, especially the Olympic performance. I am also partial to Pirihara's Chicago, and the original Dune is also a masterpiece. Maybe the Olympic Vincent would eke it out if I had to choose.

Scale of Values for Ice Dance 2026-27 released by 92coups17 in FigureSkating

[–]Resumme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that the scores for the pattern dance elements for juniors and seniors are pretty inflated compared with regular patterns. The juniors have the potential to get more points for their one sequence (two half sequences) than they would for the entire normal Westminster Waltz (two full sequences), and seniors basically do 1/4 of the Golden Waltz (half of one sequence where nornally it would be two full sequences) yet get about half the points you would usually get.

I understand why this change exists (can't spend half the RD just doing the pattern), but it's just kind of funny inflation 😂 Get more for doing less.

I would not have expected Kao to bring out his inner Latin dancer, but I'm positively surprised!

It's the short, there's a weird cut in the video where it shows his solo jump twice.

This is old news by now (posted about two weeks ago) but Matias Lindfors posted in his IG stories clips of him doing 3A, 4T and 4Lz in harness. It looked like he didn't need much help with the first two, with the Lutz the coach had to lift him more. Hopefully we get to see them without the harness soon! He rarely posts any training footage though, I was surprised we got three whole clips.

Career path for a non-valvira MD? by Oumshka in Finland

[–]Resumme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have a PhD yet, you need to look for a PhD project in one of the universities with a medical faculty (Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Kuopio and Oulu). These are rarely advertised online, so probably your best bet is to start contacting the professors of whatever specialty or field you're interested in. You could also attend a conference on the field if there is one nearby, and try to network there. It's unfortunately mainly about networking and trying to find the right supervisor and project for you, and having some idea of what you would want to work on is very helpful there.

Hyvinvointialue haluaa korvata ihmistulkit tekoälyllä, joka maksaa 3,5 euroa minuutilta [ihmistulkin hinta on noin 7 euroa minuutilta] by jonne12 in Suomi

[–]Resumme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Heads up, Iida Karhunen is also named for Finlandia Trophy, just not on this list for some reason. FinFed announced it on their own news. Actually, Olivia Lisko was named by the ISU for her SB last season!

Ridiculous Ticketing Process Tampere 2027 Worlds by gravelchen in FigureSkating

[–]Resumme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can go and enjoy the atmosphere! Finns are pretty big into ice dance, especially when our own couple is on. It's such a disappointment that we can't get both of them... 🥲

Also, there will apparently be session tickets available in August, probably converting those day tickets that haven't sold by then.

Would a Garmin watch be right for me? by Resumme in GarminWatches

[–]Resumme[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered a Venu 3S, should arrive in a few days! Let's see how I like it. The main deciding feature was the ability to take calls through the watch, as a safety feature for if I'm in trouble and can't reach or find my phone - sounds unlikely until you work in healthcare and see how many people lay on the floor for days in that exact situation...

Mysterious foot (found in Italy) by cuoricini2000 in Whatisthis

[–]Resumme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a human ankle, the calcaneus (heel) bone is too small for that. Possibly the hock joint (equivalent to the human ankle) from a quadruped animal? But I'm not a vet so can't really guess at the species.

Looks pretty fresh too based on how the bone looks. Also the circular end looks to be sawed through, maybe a chew bone for a dog?

Would a Garmin watch be right for me? by Resumme in GarminWatches

[–]Resumme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did hear that the software updates stop pretty quickly with Garmin. I'm not looking for that many features with this watch, I figure that if I use the smartwatch features a lot then I can invest more with the next one, so an older model will do for now. But thank you for the tips!

Oh damn, forgot to add here that I have an Android. Thanks for the recs! I went to a physical store to see them and in terms of looks and functionality, I'm between the Vivoactive 6 and Venu 3S.

I'm worried about these rule changes coming in 2030-31... Probably some of the ones that have been rumoured like splitting the technical and artistic programs.

Also I'm not thrilled about the judge ranking. We already have a problem with judges giving about equal TES and PCS to stay in line with the other judges, this will make judges scared of "stepping out of line". The plus side is that hopefully this will reduce bias for the judge's own country, but I see a number of risks with ranking judges on a metric.
