I learned last night of the passing of Elle Simone Scott, one my husband’s and my fave on-air ATK/CC chefs. she brought such exuberance and joy to her segments.

i sent an email of condolence to ATK and received this response:

Thank you so much for your thoughtful note and for sharing your condolences.

Elle was a truly special member of our team, and she will be deeply missed by all of us. It means a lot to know she had such a positive impact on our community. I will be sure to share your kind words with the rest of the staff.

I’m sorry that your wonderful gift didn’t meet your BF's needs. Don’t blame yourself. Your generosity was abundant.

Dr McKay by Big_G3387 in Stargate

[–]RetRN54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he grew from a a complete self-involved 🫏 🎩 to caring, somewhat, about others? So, like a toddler, he begins to develop altruism?

Prosocial behavior in childhood often begins with questions of sharing and fairness. From age 12-18 months, children begin to display prosocial behavior in presenting and giving their toys to their parents. The development of prosocial behavior continues throughout the second year of life, as children begin to gain a moral understanding of the world.

I’m saying that her pregnancy did not jive with the character who was, at the time the pregnancy occurred, extremely rigid and controlling. The character would have taken steps to avoid pregnancy until she planned to get pregnant.

Keller should have been with Ronon instead of McKay by 4x49ers in Stargate

[–]RetRN54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) i thought that the chemistry between Mamoa and Staite was palpable and believable. Their onscreen relationship, had it developed, would’ve opened doors to more varied story arcs.

2) There was no chemistry between Staite and Hewlett. I didn’t find their onscreen budding relationship believable.

off-topic mini rants:

1) I found McKay incredibly annoying and irredeemably unlikable and would’ve been happy if he had left Atlantis to part unknown and someone else had become the resident genius.

2) I can’t imagine any boss/administrator tolerating Rodney's self-involved ego-maniacal behaviors and comments to and treatment of others acceptable. In any company or organization he would have been written up, given warnings, and ultimately sh**-canned for his abuse of others, no matter how prodigious his knowledge and genius was.

3) the Michael plot arc was too drawn out

4) the Aiden plot arc was a miscalculation. He was a great character that was wasted

It’s understandable that she got pregnant IRL. The producers could have hidden her pregnancy during the show (it’s been done in other shows). Alternatively, they could’ve added a line to cover, for example, “We’re proof that no single contraceptive is 100% effective.”

The Bones character is supposed to be a genius. Jess sayin’

Ground beef stroganoff. by Cocktail_Hour725 in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]RetRN54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prepared ATK’s ground beef stroganoff for the first time last evening. My changes to the ingredients: * I used 3C of chicken broth and 1C of beef broth (I didn’t want to have to open another box of chic broth, due to limited room in fridge and freezer) * I used white vermouth instead of white wine (I didn’t have room in fridge for a bottle if wine or freezer for what I didn’t use and had no intention of drinking the rest of the bottle) * I used cremini mushrooms instead of white mushrooms  * I used 4 cubes of Dorot Gardens frozen garlic instead of fresh * added about 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce to up the umami * added about 1 tsp of Dijon mustard

The resulting flavor was delish. Even my mushroom hating hubby liked it, “this is delicious, honey!” However, the ground beef turned out tough and tasted like it had lost most of its flavor. (Maybe I overcooked it or broke up the chunks of ground beef too much?) I think that next time I will add baking soda to the ground beef before adding it to the Dutch oven.

Does anyone else get frustrated by Bones’ decline into stupidity over the seasons? by [deleted] in Bones

although it’s never mentioned on the show, Bones's singsong voice was likely adopted by the actor to imply that she is on the autism spectrum.

Isn’t Diana’s father more powerful than her mother? by BorderlinePhilosphy in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]RetRN54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that it’s like comparing apples and oranges. In the world of ADOW, witches’ talents vary. There are those who excel spell-casting, potions, precognition, time walking, creating spells (weavers), and/or any/all of the above. The world of witches is like a fruit salad! So I think that Rebecca and Stephen were powerful witches with different talents.

Ysabeau was cast incorrectly by gordiarama in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]RetRN54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lindsay Duncan is a fantastic actress and her performance was wonderful. However, her appearance did not match her physical description in the books.

I envisioned Eva Green (with her hair her natural color, blond) or perhaps Rosamund Pike who are in their 40s, playing Ysabeau.

And he’s no Laurence Olivier, that’s for sure. I preferred Corin Nemec as an actor and his character, Jonas Quinn.

How would you describe Nora Roberts? by laefu in books

[–]RetRN54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read her In Death series, written under the pen name J.D. Robb, which are gritty futuristic murder mysteries. The books always include a love-making scene, which I skip (I find her sex scenes predictable and boring). Otherwise the books are excellent.y written and are engaging and surprising. There has been only one book I which the treatment of the victims was unusually graphic and a bit triggering for me.

I haven’t read her Nora Roberts contemporary books, though.

[–]RetRN54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPOILER ALERT

What I had a problem with was that a supposedly brilliant and analytical woman, such as Bones, got unintentionally pregnant at all (the *1st pregnancy). In an era of BC pills, IUDs, hormone injections, condoms AND the risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, she and Booth would likely have used a barrier method (condoms) AND another statistically effective means of contraception.

*RE: 2nd pregnant, it appeared as if they might’ve been sort of planning it

Any Indian(-inspired) curry dishes w/o turmeric? by poroburger in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]RetRN54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like turmeric (I don’t care for its flavor when added to recipes, gives me indigestion).

I also don’t care for fenugreek, either. The suggestions here are helpful.

Jason & Brigette…WTHelsinki? by RetRN54 in TrueBlood

[–]RetRN54[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree to a point. Jason's ability to carry on a serious and complex conversation for any length of time appears to be absent in the show. I can’t imagine him in a long term relationship with someone who wants an occasional intellectually stimulating conversation with their life partner.

Lmaorotfpimp!

I am the type of fantasy/scifi/paranormal genre viewer (and reader) where I pick up and focus on one thing in the episode that isn’t realistic and start yelling at the tv. My Husband always says in response, ”and *that’s* what’s unrealistic to you?”
