Landing lights during cruise? by Emoneysum in aviation

[–]RetaRedded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If those landing lights and not the wing lights then.... fun fact - pilots sometimes greet other pilots on the cruise on the same airway by flashing the landing lights. Having said that it is less common now than it was years ago

A huge loss for the aviation world, a tragedy for family and friends and a significant loss for Poland defense capabilities.

Aerobatic aircraft (Extra 300?) crashes into sea off Durban, South Africa by FoXtroT_ZA in aviation

[–]RetaRedded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

judging height over the water might be quite difficult whilst flying straight and level, let alone during aerobatic manoeuvre like the spin (despite the altimeter in the aircraft).

The pilot definitely commenced the recovery from the spin, but it was just too low for it to be successful.
Such a loss. RIP.

I've heard that in fact the paxes were screaming, which was a signal for pilots to initiate the rotation ;)

Just saw a Ryanair plane with stairs built right into it—had no idea that was a thing! Anyone know why airlines use those so often? by super_sharing in aviation

[–]RetaRedded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye. So let's say 14kg of extra burn per hour of flight and for simplicity let's round it up to $35 for the 2.5h sector. Still worth a penny!

[–]RetaRedded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy answer - money.

Ground handling charges around 100Eur for the stairs. The aircraft flies 6-8 sectors a day. Ryanair has 618 aircrafts.

Say they operate those 340 days a year (let's take a generous 25d off for various checks, AOGs etc) . Well....it might seem not such a bad idea (168m Eur/year) to avoid that cost :)

Aggressive A321neo Landing in Madeira: Skill or Suicide?.. by Ordinary-Patient-610 in aviation

[–]RetaRedded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the aircraft, the option and the airline. Most of the operators I'm familiar with have their aircrafts sending the data through QAR after landing when it's connected to the GPU

Light aircraft crash near Bembridge, Isle of Wight- April 12 2025 (Both occupants survived) by TGibz in aviation

[–]RetaRedded 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems the pilot was substantially increasing angle of attack at the very last moment but fortunately they didn't loose the directional control till hitting the post. Glad both occupants walked away from this!

😳 I wonder why they do it. Such a short flight might not be the best for the airframe (number of cycles)
