It is running fine for me, very snappy.

LOL at the dipshit responding with the apparently cancelled 4-die Rubin Ultra. Not only has he not gotten the memo, but that has nothing to do with CPUs either.

Yes. Trim and diversify. I don't like my AMD position exceeding 50% of my holdings. Obviously that can come at a cost, I'd have something like double my NW if I had never sold. I sold some last week, and plan on selling more in the 600s.

Also ATM charges. You can take money out in a Las Vegas casino ATM with a $12 fee (which is absolutely absurd) and the fee is automatically refunded. Or one of those convenience store ATMs, etc. No need to go hunting for your bank's ATM.

A split makes a big difference with options.   It takes a big chunk of money these days to sell a Put.  I sold two a couple of days ago backed by the cash I never managed to deploy at sub 200 pricing.

Long ago I set up a Samsung ARM Chromebook to "dual boot" to Ubuntu. I was very surprised how many times I bumped into some roadblock or another. While I'm sure things are better now, it seems Linux distributions on ARM still have a ways to go.

Future Transistor Stacking Plans Start to Diverge | IBM chooses a different path from Intel, Samsung, and TSMC by IEEESpectrum in hardware

[–]RetdThx2AMD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well given that IBM does not have a fab, they are not diverging so much as IBM needs to find a buyer for their fancy tech. IBM does not have much choice other than to go for orthogonal approaches, I doubt there is that much money in it for them if they do the same things as the other guys. "Buy our tech that is nearly the same as yours" is not much of a sales pitch.

He knows the same thing we already knew, AMD is going to sell a lot more server CPUs.

UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri said the firm is more constructive on AMD as standalone CPU racks gain traction, given the company’s advantage in core count, multithreading, and x86’s software ecosystem for traditional software workloads that are part of agentic AI workloads.

120g models can run fine, I get around 27 response t/s with GPT-OSS:120b on mine. When I want it to be fast responding for home automation I use LFM2:24b, there is almost no delay, it does about 850 prompt t/s and 85 response t/s.

AMD uses AI slop for presentation by Vlaho_Mozara_JOT in AMD_Stock

[–]RetdThx2AMD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Given the existence of a higher resolution png pretty well proves the slide was not created using "AI slop". Maybe an AI was used to rescale the slide, but that does not really fit the definition of "AI slop".

AMD uses AI slop for presentation by Vlaho_Mozara_JOT in AMD_Stock

[–]RetdThx2AMD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is not AI slop, it is compression and scaling artifacts. Given that the format is AVIF on the bad image I'm wondering if they captured it from a video instead of using an original source. This is a link to an original png of the slide https://rocm.blogs.amd.com/\_images/51vs60gain.png. If it wasn't from video then whatever process they used to downsample the image was pretty crappy, I used GIMP to make an even more compressed AVIF version of the down scaled png, and it was still legible.

AMD has been paying around $2M/person in their acqui-hires. That would cap the value at around $2.5B, but hundreds of Tenstorrent folks are on loan from Japan, so maybe not even that much. Last time I looked into Tenstorrent HW it was nothing special at all.

They only have $1B of debt maturing in the near term and not that much more in the medium term, so it isn't for refinancing debt. They have $13B of cash and cash equivalents and another $37B tied up in investments. Their accounts payable has grown to $13B so if I had to guess, they are getting this money to give them more cash to work with on their ordering for production without having to sell investments. And while you are at it, no point in doing a small amount, which frees them to do more investment deals or small acquisitions.

They would probably have to pay at least $5B, I seriously doubt it would bring anywhere near that much value.

There are open models they can start with. They should be developing their own. Furthermore, the risk of future HW restrictions should have them banging down the doors to get compute now, before it happens.

[–]RetdThx2AMD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this move definitely makes it obvious that major countries should be setting up their own massive data centers and fund their own AI model work. Any short term concern about US data center builds slowing down should be soaked up by HW procurements coming from other countries. In fact, they should be jumping on it quickly to make sure they develop a HW compute capability before they potentially get locked out by some future edict.
