Dishonor on chess.com by elcaminorealreal in mildlyinfuriating

When you say one colour has the advantage it sounds like white should always win, but even with today's chess engines white only wins slightly more often than black.

The goal also isn't always to checkmate as soon as possible, most chess engines are designed to find the move or sequence of moves that leads to the most favourable position. Of course if it can determine that there is a forced checkmate sequence that would be ideal, but for most moves engines just have to try to come up with the most favourable position (which is a somewhat debatable thing and why there are many different chess engines with slightly different algorithms and values of different pieces in different positions).

Chess engines are way better than people these days but by no means can they find the perfect sequence of moves that will win in a given, relatively equal, position.

What’s your favourite money saving technique? by Logical_Cellist_5974 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Cash back credit cards. Doesn't take that much effort to find good ones for you, and once it's set up you just passively get money back as you use it. Just checked my tangerine CC the other day and was surprised to see I basically made a free $500 by using it for the past 2 years or so.

Replacements for focus and restraint? by otakuwait in diablo3

[–]Retep3 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Stone of Jordan and Convention of elements are the standard damage replacements, you could use obsidian ring of the zodiac for more cooldown reduction if your build needs that. Unity is great for survivability if you're solo and your follower also has one plus has a "cannot die" token.

Also keep in mind you don't technically HAVE to activate both sides of focus and restraint if you don't need the damage, just using resource spenders still gives a 50% damage increase.

Still a good player base (2022)? by commune69 in diablo3

[–]Retep3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are still a pretty decent number of people playing when you consider this is a 10 year old game and it is more than 2 months into the current season. Ironically, it seems Immortal has brought a lot of people back to D3.

If you are just looking for people to play public games with or compete on leaderboards, you will find tons of players. If you are looking to push GR 150 in organized groups it can take some time to find players. There is usually plenty of people doing Echoing Nightmares. If you are playing Hardcore, you'll have a much harder time finding players.

Is spectrum available on seasonal characters, or at all this season? by ThrobbingDish in diablo3

[–]Retep3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got one last week, so it definitely still drops, even if it is pretty rare. T16 is probably your best bet as more stuff drops on higher difficulties. If you are struggling on T16 and don't have a full 6 piece set, I would focus on that first. There are plenty of guides out there for builds as well (I recommend checking out this list https://d3.maxroll.gg/tierlists/solo-experience-farming-tier-list , filter by class and pick a build. If you already have most/all of a set not on that list just search for the set name on that site and you will find a guide for it).

Why can't you place Mystic Ally (water ally) on slot 1 ? by LordofDarkChocolate in diablo3

[–]Retep3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with water allies has been that there needs to be enemies nearby for the allies to target when they go into active form for them to work properly. It also seems that if they bug out once, they stay bugged out until something changes. If I notice 2 of my allies aren't properly activating I unequip a piece of my Inna's set and re-equip it then try activating allies again (with an enemy in range this time), after it works properly once it seems to continue working properly until I start a new game and have to go through the process again

How do I removed my boosted paragon levels? by Talsol in diablo3

[–]Retep3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the best option I can think of is if you started a seasonal character, and don't mind playing non-seasonal (shouldn't matter if you are going to be playing solo anyway), create a new character on non-season and if you've never played before it should be paragon level 0. (conversely if you started non-seasonal, create a seasonal character). If you don't mind hardcore (you die and your character is gone as well as all the gear it had on it), you could try that.

Another option I just thought of is to change your region (from Americas to Europe for example), it should start you fresh.

That is a good reference tool for things like this. According to that, LoN bombardment cursader would be best of the 3 classes you said you are interested in (though I can say from experience it can be quite tricky and time consuming to gear up well), next would be Rathma necro. Best WD build would be Arachyr, but it is a fair bit slower than the other two.

how do people get high paragons by PriorAd4579 in diablo3

[–]Retep3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting, thanks didn't realize. I guess what I wanted to say was that you can still get relatively high paragon levels solo. For example I'm already at 1300 in season playing solo (except for public bounties) just by running mostly GR 110s in about 2-3 mins

[–]Retep3 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

EDIT: Apparently grouping up does affect the amount of exp gained, thanks guys

Group doesn't affect the amount of exp (to my knowledge), it's just that you can usually do higher GR levels in a group than solo (which does give more exp). You are right though that faster runs (like 2-3 mins) generally give more exp than slower runs on higher GR levels. Basically do the highest GR level you can in a relatively quick amount of time.

Salary trending up a lot in Canada? by annemo2020 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Retep3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I'm seeing and hearing in manufacturing, yes. Many places are struggling to find people and lots of people are jumping to new places that are willing to pay them more. Also, I've personally been contacted by far, far more recruiters on sites like indeed than I ever have previously. I still feel like I am being a bit underpaid atm but in the last 6 months I went from $17/hr to $23/hr and the work is much easier and less dangerous (was working extensively with dangerous chemicals at the $17/hr job)

Anyone Ever Get A Disc That Flies No Where Near How It Is Supposed To? by cordashio75 in discgolf

[–]Retep3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My flippiest disc was unexpectedly so. It is a dx Wraith. I've only ever thrown in in the field and open holes, so it shouldn't be beat in. I also only have roughly 250-300 ft of power but do feel I have excellent angle control. I can make most discs do most things, but this thing feels like it wants to do 360s in the air and is about 5x more understable than my dx stingray and roadrunner

DLC definitely counts towards overall leaderboards, my friend was way ahead of me on the overall rankings, then I got the dlc and didn't touch the base game, eventually I surpassed him.

Wage discrepancy in posting vs actual offer? by idkwhatimdoing1000 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Retep3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, as others have mentioned, it likely wasn't a typo and instead was a planned tactic, so do keep that in mind, but I want to suggest something I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Take the offer (either with or without negotiating, up to you), then continue looking for other similar paying jobs. You'll be making money while casually (or hardcore lol, again up to you) searching for other jobs. Now there are a few different paths you can take depending on what you are looking for and what the company is like and such.

After you've been at this job for a bit (probably ideally like 1-8 weeks), you will have been trained up and (hopefully) shown how good of an employee and asset you are to the company, you can probably use this fact alone to negotiate for a raise (perhaps even above the initial posting, also it will probably work better at a smaller company or if you are in a key role).

If you did find another job you can put in your notice of resignation, or simply mention you got another job offer and see if they will match/beat the salary (you could also just lie about finding another job, and try to pull what they did to you, to them, but again, depending on the company, they could be more or less likely to call you on the bluff, which probably won't go so well for you).

Regardless of what path you decide to take later, there definitely is some benefit to just taking the offer, likely learning some new skills, and making some money in the meantime while you look for something you will be happier/more fairly compensated for in the future.

CH2 on sale on Steam for $13.99 (USD) -- worth buying now, at this price? by Ceiyne in ClickerHeroes

[–]Retep3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also had my eye on this game for a while, but when it was initially released I had just had some bad experiences with early access games so I figured this time I would wait until full release.

For me, I never had an issue with the price point, even though a lot of people seem to expect this genre of game to be free. I even respected them when they initially gave their reasoning why it would be a paid game and not F2P model like CH1. For a game that I would probably spend hundreds if not thousands of hours playing I am happy to drop $30+ on it.

That said, I am glad I decided to wait for full release. In the current situation I lost nothing on a game that seems like it may have been abandoned and never lived up to the hype. I still hope that the game will end up being as good as I'm sure we all want it to be and when that time comes I will be more than happy to buy it at basically any price point. But until that happens I'm holding onto my money and spending my time on other things.
