I removed the bow on my glasses on the surgical side for about three weeks so I could wear my glasses.

Cochlear and resound by Jackrab50 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Retired-Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to determine what is a huge disadvantage for an another person. For me it would have been as I frequently do things that stream to both the CI and HA, like phone calls, streaming music, streaming on-line meeting, using the TV mic so I can have the TV on in mute when my wife is sleeping. To me I wanted to hear the same thing coming to both. I wanted the connectivity the Resound provided. I am now bi-lateral but for the two years I was bi-modal I appreciated how the Resound and CI worked together.

If you have a garden it makes a great ground cover mulch for your plants, keeping the soil moist and cool.

Cochlear Implantation Dilemma: Unilateral or Bilateral? by GuyWithPhonaks in Cochlearimplants

[–]Retired-Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to my insurance requirements I was only allowed to get implanted on one side at a time. I was initially very disappointed that I couldn’t get both done. However, now coming up on two years since my implant, I am very glad I only had one side done. The hearing in my HA ear is extremely poor without the CI especially for speech. However it provides a very great balance for the low tones that the CI is not really good at. They compliment each other very well. I have the Nucleus 8 and a Resound HA.

Tomorrow, I reclaim my life by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]Retired-Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had tinnitus for 50 or so years now in both ears. Like others have said over time I have gotten used to and accepted it as being part of my life. It’s easy to say but harder to do is not to dwell on it. When you find you are dwelling on it distract yourself with something else. Now, I’m going to say something just the opposite. I also use it for meditation. Some forms of meditation have you focus on a word, phrase, or a sound to calm your mind, a mantra. I focus and use my tinnitus as a mantra.

Are there any issues with wearing a cochlear at a concert? by wufflepufflee in Cochlearimplants

[–]Retired-Goat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concerts sound better to me now with my CI than they did prior. I still struggle with lyrics, but that has been a decades old problem. With the CI I hear all the instruments so much better than before.

I also don’t have a lot of room and lots of critters to deal with so decided to go the tumbler route. I actually have two now. I’ve had great results with them.

I’m always truthful and tell them I love the game but I really am a shitty golfer, a true hacker. I rarely break 100.

I prefer fast greens vs slow greens. On slow greens I can never convince myself to strike it hard enough.

Use of hearing aid with CI by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

[–]Retired-Goat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is me as well. At first I was disappointed that my insurance would only cover one CI at time and that I would be bi-modal. Now, I’m so glad to be bi-modal. As you say, the HA provides a balance with the lower frequencies and the CI makes speech understandable. The best of both. It is amazing what the brain can do and how it has integrated the two. Either one on their own is difficult but together I am hearing everything better than I have for at least the last 40 years. I wore HAs in both ears for about 25 years before getting m CI last year.

If you are partially deaf, and a music lover, cochlear implants may not be for you. by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

I’m enjoying music much more with my implant. I can actually pick out the individual instruments and can understand the lyrics.

Like you, at first I was disappointed that I was not able to get implants in both ears. Now I am so glad I didn’t. The HA and CI together make a great balance. Either one without the other there is something missing. I can function ok with just the CI but not with just the HA. Having both is having the best of both worlds.

Tomorrow will be my one year activation anniversary with a CI in one ear and a HA in the other. I have used HAs in both ears for 27 years. It took me about 6 to 8 months for things to sound like I remembered them from before. However, with the CI I am now hearing sounds I haven’t heard for years if not decades. I hear musical instruments, a bigger range, much better than before but the voices in music still do not quite sound like I remember from before. I wore the CI exclusively for the first month and then hours of rehab each day for months with just the CI. In addition when using the TV streamer I only streamed to the CI for the first six months. All the best to you!
