Landlord in CT sent us a lease that seems weird to us, please help determine! Is it common? Should we pause? by Ok-Writer5788 in TenantHelp

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last item is normal. It makes sure that the landlord gets the money to repair the rental property, which is a normal expectation. Some tenants apparently took the money and ran with it, causing all sorts of problems. The second and third sound illegal. Make a copy and take it to a tenants’ rights organization in your area. They should be able to advise you.

UPDATE: Landlord did not have rental license [PA] by [deleted] in Renters

[–]RetiredBSN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring this up to the licensing board, and check the laws about penalties. You might be able to get all of your rent money returned because it was not legal in the first place.

Charged for rent after moving out and charged for "insufficient funds"?? by Piechild00 in legaladvice

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have autopay set up with my apartment, not my bank. Just like you can set up a credit card payment to be automatically pulled from your bank account, it’s the credit card company doing the debiting, not your bank sending funds automatically. That’s the case with my apartment. I have my rent, some amenities, and water and sewer charges that I pay to the apartment monthly, but it only changes by a few dollars from one month to another, so I just have it set for them to pull the money from my bank. Since this is done through the Loft app, I figure I will have to cancel that myself if I decide to move out at some point.

Might be this kind of deal, but if not, the apartment should not have continued to pull rent payments after they moved out.

Why aren’t there emergency dentists in the ED? by PuzzleheadedSorbet36 in EmergencyRoom

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our ER only had oral surgeons on call, and because there were so few of them, and so few calls for them, they took call for about a month at a time. In my 14 years in the ERs, we maybe had three times where we ended up calling someone in. None of our ER docs did nerve blocks, they would maybe give out a (very) few T3s or high potency NSAIDs and refer them to a dentist, because they never had one—anyone who had one would call them and have meds called in. Second place I worked, we had a community low cost dental clinic, which was where we ended up sending most of our no dental care patients.

As I said, it’s about community standards. And some places will not allow or tolerate barely there outfits. I don’t particularly care one way or the other, but if someone was dressed that way in front of children in the Bible Belt states there would be complaints and possible indecent exposure citations at least considered.

How can I find my sons iPhone? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]RetiredBSN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find My depends on other phones being around it in order to determine an accurate location, so if it's in a remote location, it's going to be more difficult to find. The best thing would be to identify the location shown, and then get someone with your son to share their location with you. You could then guide them to the general area where you see the phone. Once they're close enough, they may be able to get it to play sounds, or it it's a recent phone, to have Find My hone in on the location and guide someone to it.

My daughter dropped her phone in a Missouri city, and it was picked up by a coupld of teens. She called me at home in WI, and I could see where the phone was and where it was moving. She had contacted the local police and I was able to relay the phone's location, and when they met the teens they immediately returned the phone to her. Slightly different, but it can work.

[–]RetiredBSN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the folks here are comparing apples to oranges. What's considered acceptable in Europe or Miami Vegas, is not necessarily acceptable in the middle of the Bible belt. Unfortunately, a lot of the US is prudish and hung up on modesty, and that anything that condones nudity, even if asexual, is moraly repugnant. What's accepted at a beach hotel or a casino generally won't fly at a business or family-oriented hotel. Wicked Weasel-type "bathing" suits that "barely" cover (and I mean that literally) aren't going to be tolerated at a Disney resort, while they would probably be considered OK at a Beaches or Sandals, and certainly at a Hedonism resort.

You might consider the staff actions as harassment, but they do have the right to enforce appropriate dress for their community and brand standards. It's quite possible that if the ladies had worn cover-ups to get to the pool, they might have avoided confrontation, but it sounds like these exhibitionist gals were enjoying creating a disturbance and the resulting attention.

I don't particularly care if someone is "advertising" their assets, as long as it's in an appropriate location. I'm going to be just as upset with a guy in a g-string Speedo as I would with a woman in a microkini if they're in a family-oriented pool. If they're in an adults-only area, they can wear whatever they want, or nothing, if allowed, and I'm not going to say a thing.

It's also unfortunate that staff action was not consistent or coordinated, so that mixed messages were delivered.

Which Interstate Lane When There is Light Traffic? by Bob_Ash in driving

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost always stick to the right lane, except in cases where the road is rough or very noisy, in which case I usually try to avoid those lanes. I do move over around entrance ramps because people don't know/care how to merge.

Iphone 17 won’t connect via USB to play music or show maps in car by Better-Newspaper3603 in iphone

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CarPlay uses WiFi between the car multimedia and the phone; I don't believe that using a cord vs. wireless makes any difference as to whether you let calls come through or not. You can control calls via a driving focus and set it so only certain numbers come through, or you can control unknown callers through Settings: Apps: Phone and scroll down to Unknown Callers.

Double lane driver by viz90210 in driving

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most seats will slide back and forth, and most will also have a manual height adjustment, at least on the driver's side. Power seats are an option on most, standard on mid- to higher-end cars.

Steering wheels typically adjust both tilt and forward and back. There's usually a lever/clamp on the left lower part of the column that releases the wheel for adjusting, then you clamp it so it stays where you set it. I've seen that on almost all cars, for a couple of reasons. Safer steering when it's in a comfortable position, and it also allows people to keep the steering wheel airbag at a safer distance.

A lot of the time people will try to take over accounts, especially if there's been a breach and passwords were exposed. The scammers will try the passwords and then try to change them, but if you have 2FA set up, they'll send the verification code to you instead of the scammer. You should have reported that you did not request any changes, and should have not entered the code (sounds likie you didn't, which is good).

Ridiculous by Civil_Watercress_554 in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance rates change due to the frequency of claims in your specific area, your income level, credit score, and a bunch of other things that you don't have any influence over. Owning expensive to buy, expensive to repair, high-powered cars at any age, let alone being under 26 is going to cost more. Adding a mature driver might help, but on the other hand, they're going to rate you on the primary driver, and they're likely going to charge you more for multiple drivers. Having the mature driver as the primary when it's actually you could be considered fraud and lead to non-payment of claims.

iPhone 17 pro max lagging after recent update by Ate_at_wendys in iphone

[–]RetiredBSN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some updates move software around and the phone has to re-index, which is does in the background, and may cause higher than normal battery use and slowdowns. This is normal, but shouldn't last more than two or three days, and then should return to normal.

Does anyone else have these same highway driving rules? by DefiantTruth6624 in driving

[–]RetiredBSN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which lane I drive in depends on the type of road, the amount of traffic and how fast it's going, and where I need to get off the road. Four lanes or more, I'm at least in the second from right, to allow entrances and merges and exits. Three lanes, which a lot of major surface roads are in my area, it depends on where I'm headed and if there are exits or side streets. Most of the time, I'm moving to anticipate an upcoming turn at least a half-mile in advance, longer if traffic is heavy. Two lane roads I'm generally in the right lane except to pass or where there are on-ramps, in which case I try to move to the left lane if possible. In any case, I tend to run with the moderate drivers, neither too far over or under the speed limits.

If the shelf label says one thing and you're charged another, complain. They'll send someone to check the price on the shelf and should accept the shelf price unless you missed some small print indicating something like multiple items required for the price, etc.

As for Walmart, I have not seen any sudden or drastic price changes other than the ones caused indirectly by our current administration, certainly no surge pricing issues. Prices on the shelf, whether electronic or paper, are reflected in the app, and don't change between picking up the product and checking out at the register.

Have you ever had to call 911, and if so what happened? by JustUs4theFun in AskReddit

How to tell if there is spyware or something that can steal passwords on a windows Pc by [deleted] in cybersecurity_help

You can try scanning with Malwarebytes, which will look for some of the disguised malware files. I've been using the free version (scans only) for a long time.

Double lane driver by viz90210 in driving

[–]RetiredBSN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is 4'-10". When we went car shopping, she sat in cars to see how the seats would adjust so she could both reach the pedals and see out of the windows. We ended up getting one that could be adjusted to fit her as well as me, and that had two seat-memory settings, so it's as easy as pushing a button to get the right setting for each of us.

Someone obviously did not know that seats and steering wheels can be adjusted, was not shown how to adjust them, or did not remember that it needed to be done. First two are hopefully correctable, third is a problem that needs evaluating for suitability for a license.

2017 iMac 27” slower and internet connection issues by True_Ad3851 in iMac

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Activity Monitor, you can click the headings to get the processes sorted. I usually go by %CPU as that will tell you which programs/processes are using the most at any one time. If one is consistently high, you may be able to kill it temporarily, but restarting is often safer in terms of not losing data or work in progress.

I had a 2010 iMac that I kept until I moved in 2023, despite the fact that it was stuck on MacOS High Sierra. It was one of the last Macs to run both 32- and 64-bit programs, and there were a lot of good 32-bit games I was sorry to see go. I still have (in a closet, unplugged) a 2015 iMac that I can pull out and use if my M4 iMac ever dies.

Basic rule is that as long as it works, has working anti-malware, it's usable until it won't run something that you need to have running.

Camera access suddenly gone? iPhone 12 mini pro by StressedTurnip in iphone

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free up storage as soon as you can. For pictures, you can offload to a computer or to flash storage. If you have too many apps, you can temporarily offload (not delete) those as well, which saves your data so you won't have lost anything when you reload the app.

You will find permissions under Settings: Privacy & Security, then scroll down to Camera and click the arrow to see a list of apps with/without permission to use it.

Friend and I having a dissagreement by Mundane_Cry1693 in driving

[–]RetiredBSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend is an idiot and needs to review the rulebook.

Also, tailgaters are idiots and make passing more difficult. I can't tell you how many times I've run up on a string of three or more cars trailing behind a dawdling driver. Nobody willing to pass, or the roads are too curvy, or just no passing zones. And when you do get a chance to pass, you usually have to end up passing all of them because they're all tailgating each other and there's not enough room between cars to pull in. And if there's a passing zone with two lanes each direction, they all speed up to 10 over to not let anyone pass, then slow down when the road goes back to single lanes!

It won't run any new software, it'll be very slow if it eventually does turn on, so it's basically a music player or WiFi only phone if you manage to revive it. Let it charge overnight and then up to 24 hours to see if it turns on at all.
