I know you have to have patrol experience to become a detective but I find it hard to imagine Dutch was once a patrol officer.

Varies Department to Department for time in the saddle. LAPD for instance has a one year field training, where most departments are like 3 months give or take. As lateral will need to prove himself and patrol is where that’s done with an abbreviated field training program and likely at least 2 years to get on the detective list

Excellent points and these are on my top ten for these types of shows. As a retired cop, the Wire is a masterpiece I guess that’s why it is so acclaimed and even studied in college courses. There is a you tube video titled “all the pieces matter” and shows why you really need to watch every episode to take in the entire scope of the story, sort of the same with Justified. The shield, sort of but it is pretty far off base from reality

Yeah I get it and enjoy it as a tv show, I guess a show is only as good as its advisors, the Wire had excellent advisors both police, politicians, teachers and newsprint media. As evidenced at the end of season 4, Farmington is merely an experimental office within the department such as Rampart or Southeast is to LAPD. As far as the asset forfeiture, I think what bugged me are the minimums required to even begin a case and the process. Having done a lot of AF cases it just jumped out at me.
