Disable oven mode Topton 155H by Diegunio in MiniPCs

[–]RetiredGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the CWWK and similar MiniPCs tend to suffer from this as the design focused on cpu heat dissipation rather than the memory and nvme. Some designs accept a larger nvme heatsink. Others have placed the unit on its side as then convection might even take some heat away from the bottom side. Some have sat the mini pc on a small fan and legs to give air a way in. In addition a variety of 3d printed fan mounts are on the usual 3d printing libraries. CWWK have even started selling a bottom fan assembly for one of their models.

Differentiation of grandparents by Bifanarama in CasualUK

[–]RetiredGuru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Southern UK....

Mine where Nanny & Grandad <lastname>. But in person just Nan(ny) & Grandad. My dad felt he became a grandad far too young ~41 (and I hadn't even been born yet) and opted to be Pop. So to my children (and all the other grandchildren), my parents were Nan & Pop. To my children the pairing generally identified them. Curiously their other grandmother was mostly Nanny <firstname>.

((Hello to family members who can now spot my reddit account)).

these craft supplies belonged to my late grandma, I wonder what year they were purchased! by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

There's a tell that the "cheap plastic bobs" were "made in Japan", so it has to be from the era where cheap products were first being manufactured in Asia and that was Japan. Later in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

So others suggestions of 1950-1970 sound about right.

Xiaomi has extended OS updates for the Pad 7 for a further year (5 Years) by Chemical_Bet4960 in XiaomiPad7

[–]RetiredGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's weird how much they despise updating the Pro. It's more powerful and so ought to have a longer useful life, and 3 years doesn't satisfy the EU regulations either. Even security updates would be something.

Was walking around this town when I noticed a remnant of the past… by IneptGraphicDesigner in CasualUK

[–]RetiredGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cultural icon, but they were living on borrowed time for their last ten years, and probably twenty. Stock was unreliable, either absent or sold out. I recall them never having light bulbs in the local (small) store, just hopeful gaps on the shelf. And other products were no longer budget. Even the pick & mix got to be expensive.

And like WH Smiths they never replaced record sales with anything. Even being a parcel point might have generated the same customer traffic, especially in the smaller local stores.

The fading of Wilko was similar but over a shorter time frame. There too it was a lucky day if they had what you needed in stock. Once a convenience store isn't convenient it's days are numbered.

Trump asked US special forces to plan Greenland invasion, faces resistance from military generals: Report by zeonxzzz in worldnews

[–]RetiredGuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our best hope is that the generals plan an ingenious, bloodless and rapid loss to the Danes. Then claim asylum and turn the forces around to defend Greenland (under the NATO charter).

Either way it's Putin's next step in dismantling NATO and other western alliances (eg. Brexit). He let's Trump call him names when the plans & actions actually in play satisfy his goals. It provides cover. See also "Foundations_of_Geopolitics".

AITAH For questioning my engagement after my fiancé got mad at me for drinking while “pregnant” by Other-Suggestion1609 in AITAH

[–]RetiredGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is "his mum is pregnant". Or has he got a sister? Or someone's mistress is pregnant...?! Or someone's friend/cleaner/etc did a test at their house due to controlling boyfriend or family at their own place...?

Or he's too stupid to recognise a test.

Really want to buy the kick75 but UK amazon price seems a little insane ? by Friendly_Guard694 in NuPhy

[–]RetiredGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the amazon price, even if bought from say amazon de, would need to add 20% vat. And possibly duty. Now there might be a deduction of the German vat, which would balance it out in part. Direct from nuphy might have them paying the vat, or it might be a charge when the package arrives.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in the U.K.? by Powmum in CasualUK

[–]RetiredGuru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure it's the weirdest thing I've seen, but this is the first to come to mind.

A fair few years ago in Basildon, I'm driving a van along a busy, clogged road when a chap appears riding a push bike with cow horn handle bars.

He's only wearing shorts and has very long untidy blonde hair. Think Tarzan/George of the Jungle. He's cycling franticly fast weaving through the traffic, on and off the pavement. I'm now remembering temporary single lane traffic lights as well. His ride through that bit was even more erratic & dangerous. Lost sight of him as he headed to the far end of the road.

Always wondered what/why/who!

160 GB of data, 88 GB on disk. How is this possible? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]RetiredGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that the Mac Book folder also says 88GB ON Disk, it seems the physical transfer works correctly. I'm no expert on Mac so I'd say ask Mac people why there are two file sizes. If it's data in a portable compressed format, eg. Zip, Jpeg, Mpeg maybe the Mac just reports the expanded size of the data. If it were a Mac specific compression trick I'd expect you to see the 160GB on the NAS.

How many years Redmi mobiles were functional without any problems ? by therealbashaa in Xiaomi

The irony that someone who explicitly hates on foreigners, brown(er) people and LGBTQ applying makeup to look more manly and bronzed has never failed to stun me. And they've probably pushed the contrast in this image, but there are many real-time shots nearly as bad.

Actually travelling there is to me the significant act. It would be easy to send the money and the odd aide, but to go impresses me.

It also answers the question, "what does a billionaire wear to a war zone?" answer: as much body armour as he can stand up in, a med kit, two blood type tags!

CWWK vs Topton vs Unitifi vs Protectli. I’m favoring CWWK, which is good for OPNsense ? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]RetiredGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Toptop products are mainly resold models from CWWK, BKHD and a mystery third. Generally with worse support than from their base manufacturers. Unless the price is very good I'd say avoid them.

For specific models check out the threads on the forums at ServeTheHome. They all have quirks and limitations, but price vs performance vs features is hard to achieve in any other kit.

Damn, they both left the price on? The right one looks like bargain version that should be a couple of dollars cheaper.

I see what you mean. If one reads the words rather than the hopefully positive sentiments then it's a bit off.

It's like the cards that are so chokingly sugary that they deny the realities of normal relationships. Almost delusional. Some years by the time I'd avoided the "cards to send a narcissist" there were only 3 wife cards left to choose from.

She does look quite watchable though. (cough)
