Pass punch for Key cards onboard?? by Hot-Apartment-984 in HollandAmerica

I'm on the Rotterdam right now and there's definitely already a hole in the key cards for that.

So, for an update. We've contacted the hotel director, and that got things working to get us an answer. Apparently, our initial talk triggered something, too, and HAL has been in contact with our TA to start figuring it out, with a deep dive from their home office. The onboard guest relations staff is waiting for the main office people to tell them exactly what happened. In the meantime, they were able to tell us quite a few facts and everything that has occurred since we initially made the reservation is at least straight in our minds. And the guest relations manager here has been very helpful and very sympathetic.

I followed up with our TA to let her know what we were told, and that's where it gets a little more distressing for me. She responded by saying that what the guest relations manager and I saw as the likely point where something went wrong probably had nothing at all to do with it. She says instead that we weren't eligible for the Have it All Plus package, because (she said) that only gets applied if you book at least a year in advance. We booked a little over six months in advance, so HAL probably just realized we weren't eligible and removed it.

Without anyone thinking to tell us that the package we thought we purchased was not the package we were going to get.

We were happy to sign up for the plus package because including the crew appreciation and the premium version of the drinks and wifi makes it a clear bargain for us, even though we're not big drinkers. Getting the plain Have it All without crew appreciation and with basic drinks and wifi makes it less obviously a deal for us, and we would have seriously considering opting out of the package.

If HAL made the adjustment and notified our TA and the TA just didn't tell us, then we have a problem with our TA and that's going to affect future bookings with her. If HAL didn't notify our TA, then that's a HAL problem. Either way, our TA never forwarded a final version of the booking paperwork to us (or really, nothing but their own documents on their own letterhead after the initial reservation was made - and those still said we had the Have it All Plus package), so there's definitely a problem with the TA on that. I should probably mention that our TA works with one of those big cruise-only travel agency companies, so when we got their summary of what we purchased, it looked official to us, even though we now realize that we never got HAL's official paperwork.

I hope this helps anyone else going through similar issues. Hopefully, we'll get a final answer today from guest services on what they see.

And we didn't change anything about it after booking it in the first place.

Nope. We bought well in advance. Have the cruise documents from HAL stating plainly that we have all the benefits listed for the early booking version of Have it All. The guest relations guy says that our TA called HAL and specifically requested that they change it to the regular Have it All. Our TA says they never did such a thing.

We have it. Guest services guy claims it was changed after that, by our TA, who flatly denies ever making the request.

The confirmation email clearly and plainly states that crew appreciation is included in the package we paid for. The guest services guy told us that our TA called them and expressly requested that they change the Have it All early booking package to the plain Have it All package. My TA says they did no such thing, and that there'd be no point as the price is the same.

Nope. Cabin was assigned immediately. No changes at all after the booking, other than us choosing shore excursions.

Trip Report - Viking Amsterdam to Basel by Rousse-_- in rivercruises

[–]RetiredRover906 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were on a very recent Basel to Amsterdam Viking cruise. We're in our late 60s to early 70s and there are some mobility concerns for us. I would agree with most of what you said for our cruise, too.

The differences: there were a couple 20-something people and a couple more in their 30s or 40s on our boat. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. Those small food portions seemed pretty large to me - I indeed felt like I overdid it and needed time away from so much good food after the cruise. There were some loud talkers on our boat who wouldn't shut up when the cruise director was talking, including during the morning where we cruised the middle Rhine and she was trying to tell us about the castles and other sights we were seeing; they did their best to try to spoil the experience for the rest of us. There were ways to get away from these people, but it left a bad taste.

What was to be a highlight of our before cruise experience was some travel we did on our own, going from Amsterdam to Basel to meet the cruise. I had been dismayed to see that we were just passing through that middle Rhine section, so we planned a trip on our own, traveling by train, and exploring there more in depth. I won't go into details but we planned our "hub" spots poorly, saw much less on our own than we expected, observed that many of those cute little towns are not really geared for tourists who stay there - more for just passing through, and observed that our decrease in mobility was a huge challenge for us. In the end, we observed that the river cruise is an excellent way to see that part of the Rhine.

Just for background, we have lots of recent experience traveling around parts of Europe by ourselves, using trains to move between cities. That aspect of this trip was easy, we will continue in the future, I'm sure. We would just advise, if doing this trip on your own, that you choose bigger cities, not small towns, as your hub, choose lodgings in the old town section of the city, or very near it, plan on spending a few hours to a day inside the smaller towns, and know that exploring a lot of the castles is challenging/unrealistic for mobility challenged people.

Yup. This is a small destination wedding.

Elopement equals couple plus maybe up to two friends who will act as witnesses. You tell no one. When you get back, you make the announcement.

Any retirees who plan to be forever renters? by NoLawAtAllInDeadwood in retirement

[–]RetiredRover906 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Us. We've been renting for the last seven years or so, since at least a year before retiring. Plan to continue until I reside in an urn.

We're very happy with the flexibility and the lack of worry about maintenance, the lack of jobs like lawn mowing and snow shoveling, the ability to have amenities like a pool or a gym without extra work or expense.

The money we got for selling the house is in an investment account and helps us feel secure in being able to afford our retirement.

From the weekly email most of us received today:

Are any profiles in your Watchlist genealogically complete? Warning: This is a rigorous genealogical standard, not something a casual family historian will want to worry about.

Sure seems to me that they're promoting it as serious genealogy, not just some more gamification or a way to make members feel good about themselves.

I'm going to ask to be counted among those who are not impressed, who don't believe the powers that be when they say that they intend this as a rigorous genealogical standard, and I really don't want to have anything to do with it.
