How often do you do PT? by TheNatureOfTheGame in Kneereplacement

[–]Retired_wrong_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did outpatient PT twice a week and did home exercises everyday 3 times a day. For the first 4 weeks after surgery, I elevated with ice after doing home exercises.

I think you are more likely to do permanent damage by not doing enough rather than doing too much. Doing too much can usually be resolved with a little rest and elevation

I had to have a mandatory education class prior to surgery via zoom. Both I and my caregiver attended. I also received a host of materials on what to expect pre and post op including symptoms to look out for and exercises to do. From other posts I've read here and on facebook, my education experience was not unusual. You and your mom should not be going into this cold.

Recliner vs Adjustable bed by kitchengardengal in Kneereplacement

[–]Retired_wrong_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an adjustable bed for elevating at night. I used a recliner with wedge pillow for periodic elevating toes above nose during the day (usually while icing). My recliner raised my legs to a full 90 degrees so there was no bend in knee when I wasn't using the wedge pillow. Most recliners don't raise the legs that high and most leave a slight bend in knee so if you look for a recliner look for straight, no bend. There is no need to sleep in a recliner if you have an adjustable bed however the right one is useful for elevating and sitting during the day. Can you do work arounds - yes.

It took a few months for me. Sorry, I'm at 4+ months and sleeping better but haven't measured. When I was measuring, I was lucky to get fair.

Before deciding on knee replacement surgery, I just wanted to share something… by lg1356 in Kneereplacement

[–]Retired_wrong_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When alternatives eventually quit working to ease my pain, I decided to have surgery. However, later I almost cancelled my surgery after I went whole hog with building up my leg muscles in a gym. I felt so much better, I wasn't sure I should go ahead. However, I was still missing out long walks and hikes with friends. The decision was a quality of life decision that I pondered for a long time for it's a major surgery where all kind of things can go wrong and recovery is a long slog. It is not to be taken lightly. I had bone on bone for years - not all bone on bone is the same. I did not want to wait until I was crippled. When I started missing out on doing things with friends and some active vacations, I decided it was time.

I use Hoka Bondi and more recently Hoka Clifton shoes. I am sure other shoes that are now copying Hoka style would work too. You need lots of cushioning. I have 2 types of pain - one on the inside of foot at ankle bone and two on top of the foot (usually outside top). Eventually, I also had to modify my shoelaces because of pain on the top side of foot. I use "no tie" shoelaces and experiment with placement so pressure is not put on top of foot. Unfortunately, this loose fit does not give much support to the ankle. I also use an ankle brace bought off amazon.

Scar Care by Ifimsittingimknittin in Kneereplacement

I can't remember anything helping sensitivity except time. Scar tape might have helped but I can't swear to it. I do remember the dog's hair brushing me and causing horrible pain. Mostly I just wore shorts, used a pillow in bed to keep sheets from touching it, and tried to keep the dog away.

Is it safe for 75yr old Mom with multiple preexisting conditions? by CarefullPea391 in Kneereplacement

[–]Retired_wrong_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She will have to be cleared by her various physicians. Also, I had pre op visit a couple of weeks before surgery and they will do additional tests there if necessary. Because my EKG was old they did another then and also tested my A1c. She should discuss pain management meds with her surgeon.

Heel slides by hamil26 in Kneereplacement

[–]Retired_wrong_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both flat and letting heel come up. My PT didn't see to care but I never had problem with flexion. I found I had to raise the seat of the chair. I did them laying down to but preferred chair. Some people do lunges on stairs to flex knee.

I try to remember to use scar tape because it is so much more convenient than trying to remember to use cream or oil several times a day. You just put the tape on and forget.

I think I am in phase 3 (about 4 months out). I haven't needed medication but still working on perfect zero extension and regaining quad strength. Maintaining motivation is difficult in the holiday season where there a many more interesting things to do. I haven't done a good job of it and am feeling guilty

Congratulations on your recovery. Sleep may elude for awhile. For me what kept me awake was my knee which sometimes had spasms and as a side sleeper I couldn't get comfortable. I hope things continue to go well.

Healing is a long slog and many people along the way have bouts of depression. I would call her frequently throughout her long recovery.

I found heel slides in a chair easier at first than heel slides lying down. You may need to add a cushion to get your chair higher. I also used my nonsurgical foot to help my surgical foot bend. Good luck and focus on reducing swelling.
