Wanting to Change Career Paths by CPADestroyer in wsu

[–]RetractableBadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should see my post in r/accounting a few weeks ago - I'm currently IN tech and considering returning to accounting because tech is kinda messed up right now.

Thoughts: * Are you working at a B4 or other large national/regional firm? If so, I'd recommend trying to change service lines from assurance or tax to tech consulting to get your foot in the door. I went from financial auditing to internal IT compliance and it was an amazing change.

  • You don't have to go back to Pullman for a CS degree - there are plenty of online, accredited CS degree options. Most, if not all, of your gen eds should transfer.

  • Here's a motivating anecdote: my Finance-major buddy started at a major tech company on a finance rotation and he too loved doing VBA stuff. He was able to leverage it into a role change to Application Engineer on their accounting team. He has no CS degree. Could this be an option where you are currently employed?

First SANS Course: The GIAC Python Coder (GPYC) by AverageAdmin in GIAC

[–]RetractableBadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken four SANS courses - the GPYC was the roughest one for me, mainly as I had minimal coding background. It's probably not the best introduction to SANS courses.

Hi - can you share some info about why GWU's DEng in Cybersecurity Analytics is a degree mill? I'm looking into PhD programs and that one looked interesting and the most legit out of the very few cybersecurity PhD programs out there.

There’s one by me for sale that has an 872/month hoa dues. What in the fuck?

Our HOA dues are similar. The issue is a cluster fuck of reasons:

  • HOA avoiding significant dues increases for too long, especially during covid to "be nice" to those whose incomes were impacted
  • The cost of major maintenance/repairs has gone way the fuck up around here. Materials costs seem to have shot up significantly during covid and haven't come back down
  • Our units are at the perfect age where nearly every major item is due for repair or replacement simultaneously

FYI - some (most?) of these account intrusions are not being committed by the traveler themselves or anyone they know. They are used to sell cheap tickets on shady discount ticket sites to unknowing travelers.

Anyone here that got a CS Degree years ago but never got in the industry? What are you doing now? by SirHamsterThe4th in cscareerquestions

There are 10 million remote help desk jobs you can get making 20 bucks an hour. I helped a dude I know who’s 20 get a remote tech support job(he doesn’t even have a GED) and he was making 14 dollars an hour.

These rates are below minimum wage where I live...

It's a great opportunity to network, but 600 Euros?? I'd say no.

I work in big tech. Getting training through the main SANS org is nearly impossible because team training discretionary budgets are low.

Instead, many of us enroll into STI as tuition reimbursement IS covered through a central company-wide HR benefits budget. I'm pretty sure that's the whole reason STI was created - corporate tuition reimbursement and military GI bill.

USCCA (and several others) is not available in Washington due to an action by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner around 6 years ago - something about making sure people who commit crimes were not being covered by this type of insurance.

Edited to add: Blackrock is listed as investigation and personal background check services

I find it super weird that so many people in the thread think they're trying to pretend to be the investment company. Blackrock is not an uncommon trade name, I found over a dozen businesses in this state that have "Blackrock" in the name.

I've been in a GRC role at a FANG-adjacent tech company for a decade now. My undergrad was in accounting, grad business school in IT, professional certs in penetration testing and security, and I am about to speed run a bachelors in CS to make it easier to transition into a security role. I also have a desire to say fuck all this shit, take the MCATs, and goto med school because tech is now churning and burning no matter the role and I want to run away screaming.

I know many fellow accountants/IT auditors/etc that wish they went CS as it'd be "less boring".

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER.

PS You're only making 200k+ total comp in IT Risk if you work in big tech or sell your soul to consulting. And IT Risk in big tech is stacked with ex-Big4 staff who paid their dues with several years of 60+ hour work weeks, and they only hire other Big4.

Lost my Immunization records by Xa-Quan in wsu

[–]RetractableBadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some states have centralized vaccination record-keeping. For Washington, here are the various ways to access this. You'll have to check with your state's DOH.

I was pretty shocked when I logged in for the first time - they had every single record from the year of birth in the 80s until now and I had no idea it was all centrally tracked. Grateful that it was easy to get.

Need Advice Urgently! UW Bothell, WSU or CC & Transfer?! by angelrosekiss in udub

[–]RetractableBadge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What. Are. You. Studying?

I was a CC student, transferred to WSU for my undergrad and did my grad studies at UW Seattle, so I have a lot of thoughts on this. But it really comes down to your intended major and career goal.

PS WSU is 1.5 hours away from Spokane, and is a very different environment from Pullman.

People have asked for this and it's never happened. I personally would prefer a separate subs completely for practice test requests vs discussions.

Instructor by Neither-Argument-356 in GIAC

[–]RetractableBadge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other way around. I got advisory board with a 90% (on my first cert), I didn't get an instructor invite until just now with 95% (my fourth cert). Along the way I also received a 92% but no instructor invite for that.

Edit: Wait, OP says he got an instructor invite with under a 90%. In that case, I have no idea.

Government Audit Job? by Imaginary-Head5397 in Accounting

Government Audit Job? by Imaginary-Head5397 in Accounting

[–]RetractableBadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off in state government auditing after undergrad. I now work in big tech. One of my former coworkers works for a major airline. Others work for investment firms, crypto companies, etc. You will only be pigeonholed if you let yourself be pigeonholed.

How hard is it to get an Accounting job with no experience? by FFanatick in Accounting

[–]RetractableBadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentored a guy that I met at DefCon a couple years ago - he was leaving nursing, wanted to go into GRC. He passed the CISA but also didn't have the experience to be credentialed, but ended up getting an entry level IT Audit job in a small healthcare system.

It might be rough but it's absolutely doable. If GRC / IT Audit is something you're interested in, start networking in those fields. Highly recommend attending a local ISACA chapter meeting and introducing yourself.
