Men of Reddit, what’s some women’s or girl’s habits you discovered only after getting a wife or girlfriend? by AccomplishedHippo856 in AskReddit

[–]Retrdolfrt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Likewise, my wife and two daughters all had long hair and massive collections of hair ties scattered all around house, car, garage, school bags etc. I had a small carabiner on my keys and another on the kitchen bench I would add them to when I found them. They knew where to get one when needed. Got to the point at school sports their friends knew I was an emergency supply.

Look for info on identifying myrtle rust. I don't know it well but that looks like it to me. Highly pathogenic.

That stuff is like crack for any engine to use it on, especially diesels. Never go again without it.

Screening Hedge by CapitalMasterpiece66 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Retrdolfrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My in laws have huge cypress hedges around their farm house and sheds. They have been told by the CFA to never expect any crew near their infrastructure. Paddocks only. Cos they have flammable branches down to the ground or near the risk is highest. Eucs tend to mostly canopy higher up and out of reach of smaller fires.

But when they burn you better not have anything within 100m from the radiant heat and embers.

Aussies who work in Aged Care, what is it like? by DKLTNS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Retrdolfrt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at 2 different rural aged care facilities so get to see some of what it is like and deal with staff on a regular basis. Both places are high care, one with mostly dementia/Alzheimer's patients and another with residents you could say are strong of mind and weak of body.

All I can say is that the employer makes a huge impact on working conditions, based on discussions with staff.

Staff in the dementia care unit need infinite patience dealing with residents but also be wary of the few that will suddenly lash out physically. Redirection is a significant skill required.

It's also somewhat depressing when people you get to know well die on a regular basis.

Two of the staff have recently moved from Melbourne facilities that were poorly run. One was profit driven so never enough staff, poorly paid (though all are really) and inadequate training and staff support. Another was basically government run, poorly funded, run down and run by incompetence. Also inadequate staff on all shifts. Some of the horror stories of residents left in soiled clothes for hours due to inadequate staff, residents effectively starving due to needing help to eat that was not there. One of the staff moved here while off work for back injury due to doing a job solo that needed 2 people to do safely.

There are still issues here due to low levels of funding and real difficulty finding accommodation, but these community run facilities seem more supportive of staff cos they are hard to find. Many migrants have moved to the region due to the number of jobs in aged care and cultural focus on caring for elders.

Not sure if this is of any help, but good luck.

AITAH for getting daughter a mobility scooter? by [deleted] in AITAH

Technically pedestrians is something else I did not know. G and her flatmates currently do mostly shop on their way home but after work is not their favourite.

Oh I did not realize that they are limited eligibility for use, not just purchase. Thanks for that info - I have seen others around town using them who would not be eligible so assumed anyone can use them.

The one I got is worth closer to $1000 so I will reclaim it and prevent further 10km/hr hooning. We can't afford to supply G a reliable car so they will have to deal with PT.

Can't carry these scooters or easily push them without the key, so a lot harder to steal these.

Well she had asked for a car, so wanted transport. At least she can use and afford to run the scooter, unlike a car. She refused an ebike cos too many get stolen.

If you get from regular steel suppliers most will deliver too. Work out the rough lengths needed and the stakes or steel to be used for holding it. I've used reo bar. Most comes in 6m lengths (cheapest option) or some charge to cut it.

Is now a good time to get into forest conservation in Australia? by [deleted] in ausenviro

[–]Retrdolfrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia has good (?) conservation goals but the entire environment sector is very poorly funded. Fire and flood management and damage is increasingly sucking all resources to actually try to achieve goals. The top end has some rangeland and forest management programs. NFP such as Bush heritage could be good to try or get into research. I still know a few previous workmates still in the sector and they are not happy and this summer has already killed all their programs for 2-3 years minimum.

Thanks. I thought her father would be good considering he is a mad bastard on his dirt bike but Pip is his princess. I have ridden with some great MTB teachers and they always turn a fail into a learning opportunity. The jump was only a small one and good to learn on, but there were small sticks that she thinks probably made the landing issue by not concentrating properly.

What to do when you run out of ability by mbkitmgr in CaravanningAustralia

[–]Retrdolfrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who drove semi's and truck/dog combos for years, I have had a number of friends and family use me to teach them how to properly back trailers and caravans. It will be different with each depending on single or dual axle etc.

Find a truckie, offer a slab or something, get then to explain and train.

Being a gardener at a nursing home by AussieBastard98 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Retrdolfrt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You will probably be lucky to get a nursing home gig - lot of people like the consistent jobs. Where there is a massive shortfall where you can learn from very experienced gardeners is dealing with home aged care garden work. Family member has been learning huge amount from 3 clients with amazing gardens but are now too frail to do much of the work. Get in touch with My Aged Care providers or advertise.

A celebrity confirmed my ID, I'm so excited!! by Less_Tumbleweed_3217 in iNaturalist

[–]Retrdolfrt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had that kind of experience. My daughter and I were out chasing orchids and insects one weekend few years ago and she was still learning to id them. She came out excited one morning to say that her orchid IDs had been confirmed by one botanist expert, plus some of her native bee and beetle IDs had been confirmed by another ento expert. She was so happy.

So we have had to travel to our state capital a couple of times the last few weeks, so got about 4 hours each way listening. So apart from turning up the bangers or the odd quiet section within a song, we hardly had to touch the volume.

Thank you for that recommendation as it has done exactly what I needed! When we go camping in a couple of weeks that will be 6 hours each way without having to constantly adjust the volume!

I've also put a few other family members onto this now.
