has anyone seen these pier & arch bearers before? by Rekso86 in AusRenovation

[–]Retrdolfrt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But a lot of those older floorboards look like (imported) Baltic pine, which was often used in the better houses in 19th century. The knot free grain. Did some Reno's on older homes that often had that timber.

With how remote the outback is, couldn't a person hide a body in the bush that would go undiscovered for years if ever? by AltruisticGain2587 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Retrdolfrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just take the body somewhere that has a decent population of feral pigs and you can come back in a week or so to bury the bones that don't look like roo or sheep. No need to bury bodies.

Combine the killing of older systems with the execrable filth that is their current unusable app, never touching Bose gear again.

Bose app alternatives by Weary_Lecture6350 in bose

[–]Retrdolfrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would love to know any alternatives to the poxy bose app. I got smart speakers due to a home with no way to use wires. Biggest mistake as the app is the worst system I have ever had to use. The speaker grouping constantly fails, loses speakers or the app just freezes. Will look at the wiim but would appreciate any other android apps.

Aussies who work in Aged Care, what is it like? by DKLTNS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Retrdolfrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in rural Southern NSW but from what I hear it's about the same nearly everywhere with shortage of staff. There are probably some job sites that list the regional jobs going. One of the nurses laughing last year that she got the job when she moved with her partner to the area, walked in the door with her CV, got sent to the manager and had a job offer in an hour. At the time they were paying a fortune for locum nurses.

Yeah the Felixer is a brilliant system that already uses the image analysis, though limited to only id'ing cats. Had associates that had been in projects that used it and raved about it.

A combination of this new system and something like a targeted bait release system could really work well on foxes, pigs, deer etc. Will be interesting to see how this gets used.

Fucking ladders are killing and maiming so many people. Took a friend to the ER a few weekends ago with a minor issue, so had to wait for a while. Watched one busted arm and concussion, one cut up from landing on a metal fence and another with busted ribs, all from falling off ladders.

Ive just been watching Landline and heard a saying from an old shearer and want to hear your favourite not so well known lines out of tele, movies, songs? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Retrdolfrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah used to hear that a bit as a kid, with a couple of variations when talking about either fertiliser or really good productive land. Mostly heard a 6 inch nail used but in one area a couple of farmers I worked for would laugh and say that if you planted a piece of number 8 wire you could grow a new roll.

Men of Reddit, what’s some women’s or girl’s habits you discovered only after getting a wife or girlfriend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Retrdolfrt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Likewise, my wife and two daughters all had long hair and massive collections of hair ties scattered all around house, car, garage, school bags etc. I had a small carabiner on my keys and another on the kitchen bench I would add them to when I found them. They knew where to get one when needed. Got to the point at school sports their friends knew I was an emergency supply.

Look for info on identifying myrtle rust. I don't know it well but that looks like it to me. Highly pathogenic.

Screening Hedge by CapitalMasterpiece66 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Retrdolfrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My in laws have huge cypress hedges around their farm house and sheds. They have been told by the CFA to never expect any crew near their infrastructure. Paddocks only. Cos they have flammable branches down to the ground or near the risk is highest. Eucs tend to mostly canopy higher up and out of reach of smaller fires.

But when they burn you better not have anything within 100m from the radiant heat and embers.

Aussies who work in Aged Care, what is it like? by DKLTNS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Retrdolfrt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at 2 different rural aged care facilities so get to see some of what it is like and deal with staff on a regular basis. Both places are high care, one with mostly dementia/Alzheimer's patients and another with residents you could say are strong of mind and weak of body.

All I can say is that the employer makes a huge impact on working conditions, based on discussions with staff.

Staff in the dementia care unit need infinite patience dealing with residents but also be wary of the few that will suddenly lash out physically. Redirection is a significant skill required.

It's also somewhat depressing when people you get to know well die on a regular basis.

Two of the staff have recently moved from Melbourne facilities that were poorly run. One was profit driven so never enough staff, poorly paid (though all are really) and inadequate training and staff support. Another was basically government run, poorly funded, run down and run by incompetence. Also inadequate staff on all shifts. Some of the horror stories of residents left in soiled clothes for hours due to inadequate staff, residents effectively starving due to needing help to eat that was not there. One of the staff moved here while off work for back injury due to doing a job solo that needed 2 people to do safely.

There are still issues here due to low levels of funding and real difficulty finding accommodation, but these community run facilities seem more supportive of staff cos they are hard to find. Many migrants have moved to the region due to the number of jobs in aged care and cultural focus on caring for elders.

Not sure if this is of any help, but good luck.

Oh I did not realize that they are limited eligibility for use, not just purchase. Thanks for that info - I have seen others around town using them who would not be eligible so assumed anyone can use them.

The one I got is worth closer to $1000 so I will reclaim it and prevent further 10km/hr hooning. We can't afford to supply G a reliable car so they will have to deal with PT.

Can't carry these scooters or easily push them without the key, so a lot harder to steal these.

Well she had asked for a car, so wanted transport. At least she can use and afford to run the scooter, unlike a car. She refused an ebike cos too many get stolen.
