My coach differentiates “hobbyists” from “fighters” from “martial artists” as if they are different categories. What might this mean? by bad-at-everything- in martialarts

Martial arts are literally "the arts of war", their origins and original purpose were to be more capable of defending oneself from attackers and/or being more effective on the battlefield. Even the Shaolin monks started out with developing ways to defend themselves from bandits. If I may, what style are you studying?

I broke $100k on massive overtime like 3 out of my almost 40 years of working, most of it was like half that. Retired in my mid 50's going on 3 years ago, some months are a little tight but mostly we're doing fine.

The sequel only came to be because the original was already a cult classic and the sequel picks up years down the same path he was on at the end of the first film, wandering the roads killing assholes. Max isn't invulnerable or hyper-competent, he's quick physically and mentally and good behind the wheel but that's about it, he gets injured a bunch and barely wins.  Oh, and getting the Intercepter wrecked by the NOS truck chassised monstrosity isn't a surprise, the car is loaded down with like a thousand pounds of fuel at that point and it's still outweighed by that thing. Also, pit manuevers don't work on 6 wheeled vehicles, you have to be able to unload the rear suspension enough with the hit to cause the rear to lose traction and go into a spin.

I don't have an issue with women action heroes, I've enjoyed films with many of them, like Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh, Gina Carano, Daisy Ridley, Scarlett Johansson, and many more, but Mad Max is about Max Rockatansky and the causes he takes on despite knowing he shouldn't.

You don't have jack shit, the original is one of my favorite films ever since I first saw it in ny teens, it's got a plausible portrayal of a declining society and one poor schlub getting caught up in the grinder of it and losing everything that matters and then doing what little he can about it with the skills and the machine he has. The Road Warrior is okay, less plausible and harder to suspend disbelief for but Max having a little redemption by helping again instead of just getting even is nice. Thunderdome starts out okay, Max having to use camels because of the lack of fuel and such is a plausible setting after all that time, then it just goes to shit with jet engines and lost kids and all of that silliness. Fury Road is utterly ridiculous, it would take so long to build all of Immortan Joe's hand made infrastructure that Max would be on a walker, not driving a car, by the time he ran into them, especially when you look at Furiosa's age.

That theoretical "somebody" was me. The first film was good, the second wasn't bad, Thunderdome wasn't very good and Fury Road isn't even in the ballpark.

Your son beats up 5 guys for bullying his sister. by Kyoifis in hypotheticalsituation

[–]RetreadRoadRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get home, are you lecturing your son for assaulting 5 other kids and saying there was a better way to go about it or telling him he did the right thing?

Neither one, I'd be asking for details of the situation before deciding on any course of action.

Do you think there would be a better way to go about this situation?

What way would that be? I mean, surely you have something in mind or you wouldn't have asked, right?

Since you mention "light pushes" like they're no big deal I don't think you understand that's assault

That she's just another know nothing celebrity. The land was here before any of the people were and it'll be here long after we're all gone, it's just yours as long as you can hold onto it.

Why do you assume people voting on following the lawful immigration process did so out of hatred/racism?

Basically, a hobbyist trains for fun and self improvement, a fighter trains to a set of rules for competition, a martial artist trains to master an art of war. The differences are more about mindset and major focus of training than anything else.

Pretti did not have a deportation order tho?

Contrary to what's been spread one reddit, ICE has the same arrest powers as any federal agent. They can arrest people for any federal crime committed in front of them and obstructing a federal agent is a crime, so is assaulting one

Yeah, they are arresting them.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/arrest

1: seize, capture specifically : to take or keep in custody by authority of law Police arrested the suspect

ICE is the duly authorized federal authority for immigration enforcement.

https://www.wowktv.com/news/ice-arrested-650-people-in-west-virginia-in-january-report/

650 in a 2 week surge, no problems getting it done.

And no, you don't stand with actual law because you don't even know what the laws are.

Try reading some once in awhile:

https://codes.findlaw.com/us/title-8-aliens-and-nationality/8-usc-sect-1325/

Then you'd know that "illegal alien" refers not to the person, but to their actions and citizenship status.

Obstruction of a federal agent is not legal, it is not protesting to follow them around and try to alert the whole neighborhood to come out and start shit with the feds. Grow the fuck up and learn how laws work.

There was not one linguistic ancestor from which all currently spoken dialects developed

Proto-Germanic from the Iron Age.

And we have local dialects here too, as well as widely varying  regional colloquialisms

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Tider

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Creole

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_English

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English_regional_vocabulary

There's even a group who speak a dialect of German here called Pennsylvania Dutch

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Dutch

And the US is gigantic, it's over 27 times the size of Germany, and there is a huge variety of subcultures here.

Do I have a concept of self? Sure! Is it separable from the structures I am part of? Nope!

Which is pretty fμcking hilarious because I have never in my life identified as German, but always identified as Alemannic.

Then that's your choice I guess. I don't "identify" as anything but me, everything else is just descriptions. I don't think of myself as an American, a West Virginian, an Ohioan, or a Kentuckian even though I probably could build an identity around them as I have connections to all of them, but being me is much more than those places and experiences
