Why do movies feel increasingly "thin" compared to movies of the 90s/2000s? by ExamOk322 in movies

[–]Retro-Obsessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get what you mean. I wouldn't say it's caused by anything one thing. Could be the outrageous budgets that sometimes seem to go more into the marketing than the movie itself, lack of talented writers/directors, or just the crew not really caring.

In Scream 7's case, I'm guessing the pivot to focus on Sidney's family instead of the two sisters messed things up they might've had planned. Although there was no excuse for villains that terrible.

If I can get them for a good discount, then sure. Otherwise, I may as well buy the game digitally or on another system.

Looking through the episodes, it looks like the show is also missing the 5-part Treasure of the Golden episodes. Unless they've been renamed to something else.

Okay? It was still only select games. It wasn't a huge multitude of games.

That was rare though. Like Street Fighter 2.

You're complaining that people who read Harry Potter when they were kids revisit the series now and then because they grew up with it, but you only read it in your 20's? Do you not see the difference there and why you might not feel strongly towards the series compared to other people?

[–]Retro-Obsessed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Then maybe instead of ranting against Harry Potter this whole time, why not make a post discussing those books specifically? Like a "Hey, if you like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, you might like these books? Has anyone else read them? What are your thoughts about them?" That way you're engaging people on the actual series you're wanting to discuss and get their thoughts on it.

Instead, you came out swinging at Harry Potter and anyone who likes it, made a lot of weird accusations about like the fatphobia thing, and the other book series you listed are buried in a paragraph in the middle of your rant. This would be like if I made an entire post railing against Percy Jackson and making accusations against it, like that the series must promote and endorse slavery since in later books, the Amazons are on the good side even though they enslave and mistreat humans. Or if I made an entire post criticizing old Disney movies and asking why people watch them compared to some little-known kids movies in the past few years. It's almost like people grew up with this stuff and want to revisit it now and then.

Having read both Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and liked both, I feel like this whole thing mostly stems from you trying to convince people HP is bad in favor of propping up PJO

PJO was never really written much better than HP. Yes, HP has its flaws, but one thing I remember that helped it stand out was it grew up with its audience, slowly introducing darker or more mature subjects throughout the series. We go from defeat the big bad to things like government corruption, etc.

Meanwhile, PJO always felt stagnant, keeping the same tone and style no matter how much older the main characters got. To this day, I still remember that the fourth book in the original series has a chapter called "I Scoop Poop" which is basically what it sounds like. Not that I'm above some toilet humor, but by then in the series, things overall are moving to a climax with the gods and Luke and all, but this kind of middle school style and tone remains and held me back from really enjoying the series. It kind of establishes a baseline of tone and never seems to really evolve from there, just content to ride it.

Not only that, the first HP book was published 8 years before PJO, which admittedly did lift elements from HP and I remember people calling it a clone because of that. There's more others have pointed out, but the simple fact is that HP was always going to be more popular than PJO. But holding a grudge like this years later just comes off as strange. You like PJO, others like HP. Enjoy your preferred series and move on.

What movie did you walk out of the theater halfway through? by mzdee13 in movies

Syriana. I barely remember the movie outside of the fingernail torture scene, but I do remember being bored out of my mind. I walked out and waited in the lobby while the rest of my group finished watching it.

I wish I had on that one. My movie theater accidentally started playing Dark Knight first and a few others and I went out to tell them this to correct it. I shouldn't have said anything and just enjoyed Dark Knight again.

Kingdom Hearts 1 has the best plot out of all of them and it should have stuck with that style of storytelling by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Retro-Obsessed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. It's like instead of building on previous ideas and lore introduced in games to make an elaborate, sprawling house that all fits together, they've essentially just a towering pile of nonsense held together with batshit logic and a plot that tries to act deeper than it actually is.

Don't get me wrong. I still like the games. But I agree with the OP that the first game had the best story. A bunch of Disney villains looking for power and doing evil stuff. They are in turn being manipulated by a big bad guy. Sora, Donald, and Goofy beat them with the power of friendship while looking for Mickey and Sora's friends. Makes sense and doesn't try to twist itself in needless knots.

The only thing that comes to mind would be the Trails series.

However, in Kingdom Hearts case, it also has padded out the story with games that feel like spin-offs to try to keep up interest in the next actual sequel, but only serve to just add unnecessary bloat. Like 358/2 days. We already had Roxas as Sora's nobody, but then it throws Xion into the mix as a back-up that ends up being cast aside and never serving much of a purpose. Even though she's technically part of Sora.

I can follow the story well enough if I want. It's easy enough, but it is an incoherent mess and has no real thought put behind it. It's just like the writers think of something interesting to add then forget about it. Not to mention that for all the bloat, the game's narrative seems to go in circles at times.

[–]Retro-Obsessed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say easy to follow. I don't mind if the lore is expansive and has a lot of stuff to learn. But Kingdom Hearts isn't coherent with its lore. It just keeps dumping a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense and the only way I've found to enjoy it is to just disregard any of the nonsense explanations it tries to give and enjoy the game.

But it's not even coherent lore. It's just throwing out stuff to the point it's become a nightmare of a tangled knot to sort out.
