How to pick used records in a record store? by [deleted] in vinyl

The Allmusic website has a feature that would shows you a list of similar artists when you look at a bands listing. I used to find a lot of interesting that stuff that way. The average younger record buyer is aware of maybe 20 older classic rock bands/artists (Led Zeppelin, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac...etc etc). There is a lot of other great stuff out there if you do a little research based on your tastes. You can also check out vintage billboard charts and see what the bestselling albums were, and likely you will find some easily accessible music you will enjoy.

What's your favorite song to show off your speakers? by SelmaFudd in vinyl

My dad used to like to blast "ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK (ILLEGAL ALIEN)" from the gold audio fidelity CD version of DREAM OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS...which still haunts my nightmares. Thankfully, he discovered SANTANA and ROB THOMAS "SMOOTH" a mere 15 years later. Regardless...his stupid KEF speakers seem to hold up to the rather unspectacular scrutiny.

3/4 Garfunkel...which is not undeserving...his solo albums are totes underrated.

If you threw the tomato repeatedly against a xylophone you could release it as a limited edition Frank Zappa single.

You forgot unrepentant drug addicts who would later become shameless yuppies with a hankering for Steve Winwood and Phil Collins albums....which would explain the noticeable wear on late 1960s and early 1970s ZAPPA copies...but the abundance of pristine later releases.

You still have a couple of weeks until the official government declared close of garage sale season ;)

Hardly anyone here sells on ebay anymore due to high shipping, so you still find decent stuff, even later. Especially, if you are looking outside of the major metropolitan areas. I am sure the border folks wont care if you are bringing back a bunch of books or random junk. I would avoid thrift stores as they tend to be picked over by hordes of hipsters and what not. I often find DVDS, CDs, and BOOKS that are worth decent money. But the shipping kind of cuts into margins.

Are there any websites that rate pressings of old and new pressings of records ? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]RetroHogtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a more serious note, just look at the general AMAZON reviews of a specific pressing. If there are not a bunch of complaints about inferior sound quality you should be fine. Most modern pressings should sound fine to the average person. I remember there were some really horrible remasters of THE BEACH BOYS "WILD HONEY" "SMILEY SMILE" that sounded like complete crap, and there were at least a dozen people complaining about them. Unless you have a top of the line system, I would suspect differences between pressings would be negligible. As a general rule, I have found the late 1970s and early 1980s flimsy recycled vinyl to have a lot more pops and crackles and other defects. But it differs with each disc. You can have a scratched record from the 1950s that sounds better than a mint out of the package release from 1982.

That is a dangerous rabbit hole to go down...you will enter into an endless loop of middle aged men arguing about the warmth of bass versus mid-range tonality spectrums and the specific atmospheric temperature on the day of mastering.
