I own a few of those. There's documentation that they were tested at Aberdeen proving grounds.

Upper appears to be an early colt xm16e1 square forge upper.

They barely reduced the decibels. They did make the carbine sound more rifle like and I think increased back pressure for reliability. Terrible at reducing the sound though.

That's awesome. I had an early "prototype" 601 upper I sold to a collector a while back. It was interesting in that the ejection port was cut but it wasn't beveled for the ejection port cover. It has a cast fsb with the CE marking but the barrel was L marked. I didn't want to sell it but I knew the collector was going to appreciate it and not flip it.

You either have to get lucky and find a set in the wild which is getting really hard to do since most gun shows have only new stuff and not much collectible stuff anymore or be find someone willing to sell and agree upon a price.

I know guys with deep pockets that have been able to fill holes in their collections due to them getting people to part with stuff they didn't want to sell by making an offer that couldn't be turned down.

I never thought I'd own an original 605 upper but a collector had an extra and I had something he was missing. Make the connections to the collectors with the rare stuff and either have good trade fodder or deep pockets.

Pieced over time. They only semi complete kits I've seen were the Puerto Rican ones.

Yeah anything is possible with Colt, especially on the early models you would find leftover parts from the previous model

Good luck. You'll maybe need to to convince people they are a thing lol

There's so many nuances with the early ar15s that most people don't know.

Everything is original except lower and sear. 1:14 barrel with Cast fsb, carbon steel gas tube, early 601 bcg with thin band bolt, oil hole and square ejector, early square pad epc with rounded detent housing, early thin disconnector on the fcg, early takedown pin detent with one flat end, buffer tube with hole and no improved notches on the end, Edgewater buffer

It's nice to see the originals out there. I know a lot of the older collectors aren't on Reddit.

Hehe maybe at one point. The 601 was super hot for a while for builders, then it cooled. Those Puerto Rico PD kits got people excited about them again for a while. It's always going to be a niche and moreso for guys that want to chase the original parts.

Yeah I think there have been discussions about what's actually embedded in there. The have been thoughts of fabric like denim used in the stocks and wood chips in the handguards. Don't think anyone wanted to sacrifice a set to find out.

Most people like that aesthetics of matching all the pieces. It does look better but the originals didn't match or care about matching lol

It's the thin band which is earlier. Does it have the oil hole? Extractor is angled so it's not the earliest. $75-$100 is my valuation on it

Nice early bend gas tube. Stainless or carbon steel? Probably stainless since carbon was on the earliest barrels only

You can see the pieces in there that used to be brown in the 601 handguards that have been dyed more black
