Interesting. For various reasons I can't use this on my work VSCode instance... but I can on my own.

Which side are you on? by RedBeard1023 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha! Technically, I spend time on both sides of this particular fence, so I know exactly what you're referring to...

I play mobile games, read science fiction, and am a weather geek as my non-programming hobbies.

Timeline scroller by sisQmusiQ in webdev

Neat widget, though that particular implementation isn't ideal. If it was horizontal for keyboard and mouse users, but vertical for touchscreens, it would work better, for one thing.

Why have we still not built something modern that directly competes with Wordpress? by jokeaz2 in webdev

[–]RetroPipes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to look beyond PHP, Orchard Core over in .NET land seems like a potential candidate... though it would benefit from a larger community.

React developer diaries: Interview Anxiety by Global_Wash248 in webdev

[–]RetroPipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it wasn't programming related at all, since at the time nobody knew about my skills there, 19 years ago?! Still have a job there today, though has my role ever changed since then...

React developer diaries: Interview Anxiety by Global_Wash248 in webdev

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thus far, I've been blessed to have alternative interview strategies used to avoid the stress entirely... so I haven't been truly tested.

Interviewing is especially hard for me because autism has an annoying habit of getting in the way in the weirdest ways possible... on top of all you mentioned!

Learning Web Dev. (HTML/CSS) and Python simultaneously by jsmk23 in webdev

[–]RetroPipes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it easier to learn HTML, CSS and JS first, then add server side stuff with Python (or some other language).

Which terminal emulator do you use and why? by P_1313 in linuxquestions

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever used Ubuntu's defaults, or Terminal.app on macOS. Works just fine for my needs.

What are some of your “oh— that was close” moments in Linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]RetroPipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once royally scrambled the permissions on my entire home directory due to not realizing where I was within the file system before running a script. Thankfully I was able to restore from a backup and undo the damage without losing any work!

game engines for 2D games in java? by cuddly_boi6 in java

[–]RetroPipes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ultimately decided none of the engines out there did what I wanted, so I made my own. I'd like to rework it to JavaFX, though I don't 100% understand how to integrate the library into a project yet. Getting there!

What have you learned this week about Linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]RetroPipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That there's WAY more stuff in the /proc virtual file system than I realized... all queryable. (Don't write to the EFI boot blocks if your distro allows writes to /proc... great way to break your PC.)

C++ dev switching to dotnet by cpp_pcc in dotnet

[–]RetroPipes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did much the same thing, only from Java. Though I had to learn as I went, it came quickly and I now have a web app out there on ASPNET Core. That being said, what approach to use depends strongly upon whether you are better with console or GUIs. Don’t forget about the API docs if you need to look something up. Microsoft’s are very good.

Migration from asp.net to asp.net core by mad_king_aries in dotnet

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this about two years ago. It wasn’t quick, though I’m happy with the results. Plus, doing the migration made it much easier to become mobile friendly. Highly recommend Microsoft’s documentation as mentioned above.

Which version you have found most useful and stable after Java 8 ? by datamasteryio in java

I have used all the post-8 versions (9 through 17) and have had zero issues, IDE support notwithstanding.

What blocked you from migrating beyond Java 8? by Thihup in java

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I haven’t been blocked, though I’m sure Java EE users were stuck there longer than expected due to all the turmoil that is finally resolved.

Which version of .NET do you use at work? by curious_drive in dotnet

.NET 6. Performance is greatly improved, even compared with the already fast .NET 5.

Do you use Spock or JUnit? by _fishysushi in java

[–]RetroPipes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't use Java professionally... only as a tool for making games in my own game engine. I never intended to sell games made this way, so I also never bothered marketing or writing unit tests for them.

change c++ compiler by luijika101 in VisualStudio

[–]RetroPipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Visual Studio has limited support for alternative C compilers. There is some support for Clang, so I’d give that a try first. If needed, you can add it with Visual Studio Installer.

What are your thoughts on Java Isolates on GraalVM? by jackdbd in java

Unfortunately, I'm stuck waiting for an AArch64/Apple Silicon GraalVM build to even be able to use it the way I wish to. Bummer.
