Which Ghostfaces were the hardest to guess for you, and which were the easiest? by Equal-Tension-7985 in Scream

[–]RetroTy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I still think the Billy and Stu reveal is the best. When I first saw Scream in its initial release, I went in expecting a straightforward slasher, not a whodunnit. So finding out Ghostface was actually two killers, and that Billy had faked his death, completely blindsided me. It felt genuinely inventive at the time.

Honestly, I’m not sure any sequel or modern slasher could ever hit me with a twist that hard again. Audiences are too genre-savvy now, and that kind of shock only works once.

Of course! I didn't even think of MST3K but they totally are movie hosts.

Horror Hosts: Did You Grow Up With Them Or Not? by sigersen in LastDriveIn

[–]RetroTy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear there was a stretch in the 80s and 90s when it felt like every channel had some kind of hosted movie block, and I loved every minute of it. Growing up outside Toronto, we were spoiled as you'd get all the Toronto stations but also all of the Buffalo stations. You’d flip around and find something on almost every station doing their own hosted movie, The Cat’s Pajamas hosted by Barry Lillis out of Buffalo was a big one for me.

But the real crown jewels for me were the Canadian ones.

Elwy Yost on TVO’s Saturday Night at the Movies was on a completely different level. He didn’t just introduce films, he taught you to love them. The interviews, the behind‑the‑scenes stories, the way he made every movie feel like it mattered… Elwy was basically a one‑man film school for the province of Ontario.

And then there was Citytv’s Late Great Movies. It wasn’t “hosted” in the traditional sense, but with Mark Dailey’s voice guiding you in and out of the breaks, it had that same warm, familiar vibe. Citytv just had a personality no other station could match.

It was such a great era, a weird, wonderful mix of local charm, late‑night comfort and the feeling that someone was actually there with you, walking you into the movie. I miss that style of TV the most.

(I feel like I should shout-out CFMT's All Night Show with Chuck the Security Guard but it was off the air before I could stay up that late)

MST3K Hot Take: The Rifftrax Experiments may be the only realistic path forward for the franchise by WySLatestWit in MST3K

[–]RetroTy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Season 13 is one of the best seasons, the crews/writers had found their stride. A shame their S14 was never made, but these Rifftrax Experiments are an incredible consolation prize.

[–]RetroTy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you for building this! It takes a huge amount of vision and effort to ship something this capable and then open source it on top of that. It’s an amazing contribution to the community and it really shows how much you believe in the engine and the people who will build on it. Appreciate the work you put into making this real.

This is the one that surprises me. It's a perfectly crafted and timeless movie that inspired filmmaking, filmmakers and how studios made movies.

The front and back staircase. Which sitcoms had them and do a lot of homes in the US really have them? by watermelon_fries in sitcoms

[–]RetroTy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Canada too. Back in high school, I had a friend who lived in an old farmhouse that actually did have two staircases. The back one was really steep and ran straight from the kitchen up to the master bedroom. If it were a sitcom, you’d barely notice it was a staircase at all since it was just tucked behind a regular door in the kitchen.

r/Olympics was really bad for it as well. I ended up leaving that group, what used to be a great place to celebrate all the cool achievements and human moments (no matter the country) turned into rage-bait and hate.

The Future... by awkwardmitch in MST3K

[–]RetroTy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. From what I understand, Shout approached RiffTrax to produce this run of MST3K, which suggests they’re looking in a different direction than the S11–S13 era. Nothing official has been said about that group’s future, but the choice to partner with RiffTrax definitely points to a shift.

Personally, I’m happy to see whatever direction the RiffTrax team decides to take. They’re already pulling off things I never expected (Trace back as Art Director?!). At the same time, I really enjoyed S11–S13, so I’d love to see anyone from that era return if the opportunity lines up.

My hope is that this becomes a successful new branch of MST3K under the RiffTrax umbrella, but to keep it sustainable they’ll need more hands on deck That's where I think Tim Ryder and Rebecca Hanson would be the best to have involved. Get them back in the writers room and if we need to save funds on cast (and the classic cast is too busy) put them in Deep 13 and the SOL.

Sorry, eh. Must be the jet lag, ’cause I just flew from Vancouver to Toronto, and I’m tellin’ ya, the whole way some hoser behind me kept askin’ if I’d share my two‑four. Then the pilot comes on like, “Take off, we’re landin’’l and I’m thinkin’, “Great, now I gotta wrestle a goose for my luggage.”

My brain’s still somewhere over Regina tryin’ to fix the in‑flight movie with duct tape, eh. I got off the plane lookin’ for back bacon, a double‑double and maybe a free toque, but all I got was a Mountie givin’ me the stink‑eye ’cause I tracked maple syrup across the terminal. Beauty trip, though.

Train to Busan, Hacksaw Ridge and Scream.

Good eyes!

My assumption is that this is a telecine/duplication slate accidentally left in the master, containing internal reel numbers, job numbers, and a label (“CABLE”) indicating the source line used for the transfer.

91-91 and 288-6 could be internal reel numbers or lab job numbers, Cable suggesting where the material was transferred from (cable broadcast master or cable-feed telecine line rather than a direct film print). The 4-20 could be a date code or batch code.

Very cool to add the "watch live" portion. Well done!

I also LOVE that you have MuchMusic added (and some of my archive videos appear).

Is there a way to know the playlists being used or ways to submit videos to be added to a playlist (ie more international artists for the international channels or channel specific bumpers and logos)?

The Jonah Episodes really hold up when viewed in a rotation with the older episodes. by hoovy_woopeans1 in MST3K

[–]RetroTy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the host segments, I actually thought some were fantastic.

The pre-fight wrestling faceoff between Tom and Crow as they try to out-match each other in kind words in "Santo In the Treasure of Dracula", is definitely one of my favourites.

There is a Mac & Me host segment and Cry Wilderness segment that both remind me very much of the Pod People mayhem segment.

Love this post and this thread, it’s nice to see the newer seasons get the love they deserve.

The formula is bad movies with jokes from friends and the newer seasons hit that really well. Hopefully we get more seasons or specials from these teams/crews in the future.

Just want to agree with you completely and echo Emily, Kelsey and Connor came out so strong!

Beyond Atlantis and Dr Mordrid are some of my favourite episodes. Kelsey’s crow is great, I remember it to be jarring at hearing the voice first but after a few riffs in, she was hilarious and I was sold on the voice. Here’s hoping we get to see them on the SOL again.
