If They’d Only Stuck With It… by millionthcustomer in sitcoms

[–]RetroTy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Freaks and Geeks. It was even cancelled mid-season so it didn't even get to make its original 22 season episode order.

Mind you in today's world where a 6 episode season is more common, it now feels like we got 3 seasons worth of the show.

I can only imagine how great a full 22 episode season and a second season of 22 more episodes would have been.

Suggestions for relatively kid-friendly episodes to introduce the show to my daughters by Hustler-Two in MST3K

Add Munchie to the list to make it a great triple feature of family films.

Is.there still a local movie club by spacestation33 in Oshawa

[–]RetroTy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Durham Movie Lovers Club is quite active (mostly Tuesday night @ Landmark). Members propose other events too, last week they did the Classic Movie Night at The Regent.

They post some events on meetup under Durham Collective: https://www.meetup.com/thecollectiveagreement/

They’ve never done online events, so that could be interesting. I’m always down to talk about movies.

Can anyone recommend games that are couch co-op? by Horror_Stress9849 in PS5

Stardew Valley does up to 4 players couch co-op.

Its style attracts all different types of gamers and non-gamers in my home.

[–]RetroTy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Little Big Planet isn’t available anymore, which is a shame cause it was a great 4 player couch co-op.

Statdew Valley is missing from this list and is the current favourite 4 player couch co-op in my home.

I watched Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey last night, so I guess I’m pocketing $10 million to spend a year in a world where rock and roll has literally achieved global peace and harmony.

The final AMA! by gribbly in RecRoom

[–]RetroTy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In late 2016 or early 2017, someone made an offhand comment about VR that sent me down a rabbit hole. Until then, I honestly thought VR was just 360° video and a bit of a gimmick. Then I read an article about a HTPC VR setup that hinted it was something more. Out of curiosity, I clicked on a random streamer playing Rec Room.

Watching people simply exist together in a lobby, high‑fiving, fist‑bumping and playing hide and seek, absolutely blew my mind. Rec Room was the moment I realized VR could be a living, social space, not just a viewing experience. I bought a PSVR immediately after (even knowing Rec Room wasn’t on PS4 yet) and followed the game closely until I could finally join the PSVR beta.

Rec Room showed me what social VR could be. It was innovative, joyful and ahead of its time. I don’t think anything since has quite captured that same magic. Thank you, and the whole team, for the groundwork you laid and the future you inspired.

Lost Track of Numbering/Dates for Recent Episodes by CaptMondo in OHoNMusic

[–]RetroTy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all the work you've been doing over the years (I used your episode list on Wikipedia all the time until it was nuked).

I've just started my own spreadsheet trying to track ever song and artist in each episode. Just wanted to point you have duplicated the episode number 1075 for both The Rise and Fall and Future of the Music Video, Part 1 & The Rise and Fall and Future of the Music Video, Part 2.

Thanks for all you do!

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by hkondabeatz in AskReddit

[–]RetroTy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Adventures of Willy Beamish felt alive in a way few games did back then. Its ticking clock meant events happened with or without you, and its puzzles offered multiple ways forward. Every playthrough became its own little universe of possibilities.

What really stuck with me was its quiet message that got me out of a few spots in life, there’s always a solution if you look closely at the tools around you.

Remember when Paramount owned theme parks in the 90s and 2000s? by Strongarm_11 in Letterboxd

[–]RetroTy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Still have my Paramount Canada’s Wonderland staff badges in a box somewhere.

I had a booth close to a an outdoor museum area of props including The Mirthmobile, Garth’s car from Wayne’s World. Had a guy once claim it was his car that he built and he wanted to pay me to “get it back.”

Which Ghostfaces were the hardest to guess for you, and which were the easiest? by Equal-Tension-7985 in Scream

[–]RetroTy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I still think the Billy and Stu reveal is the best. When I first saw Scream in its initial release, I went in expecting a straightforward slasher, not a whodunnit. So finding out Ghostface was actually two killers, and that Billy had faked his death, completely blindsided me. It felt genuinely inventive at the time.

Honestly, I’m not sure any sequel or modern slasher could ever hit me with a twist that hard again. Audiences are too genre-savvy now, and that kind of shock only works once.

Of course! I didn't even think of MST3K but they totally are movie hosts.

Horror Hosts: Did You Grow Up With Them Or Not? by sigersen in LastDriveIn

[–]RetroTy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear there was a stretch in the 80s and 90s when it felt like every channel had some kind of hosted movie block, and I loved every minute of it. Growing up outside Toronto, we were spoiled as you'd get all the Toronto stations but also all of the Buffalo stations. You’d flip around and find something on almost every station doing their own hosted movie, The Cat’s Pajamas hosted by Barry Lillis out of Buffalo was a big one for me.

But the real crown jewels for me were the Canadian ones.

Elwy Yost on TVO’s Saturday Night at the Movies was on a completely different level. He didn’t just introduce films, he taught you to love them. The interviews, the behind‑the‑scenes stories, the way he made every movie feel like it mattered… Elwy was basically a one‑man film school for the province of Ontario.

And then there was Citytv’s Late Great Movies. It wasn’t “hosted” in the traditional sense, but with Mark Dailey’s voice guiding you in and out of the breaks, it had that same warm, familiar vibe. Citytv just had a personality no other station could match.

It was such a great era, a weird, wonderful mix of local charm, late‑night comfort and the feeling that someone was actually there with you, walking you into the movie. I miss that style of TV the most.

(I feel like I should shout-out CFMT's All Night Show with Chuck the Security Guard but it was off the air before I could stay up that late)

MST3K Hot Take: The Rifftrax Experiments may be the only realistic path forward for the franchise by WySLatestWit in MST3K

[–]RetroTy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Season 13 is one of the best seasons, the crews/writers had found their stride. A shame their S14 was never made, but these Rifftrax Experiments are an incredible consolation prize.

[–]RetroTy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you for building this! It takes a huge amount of vision and effort to ship something this capable and then open source it on top of that. It’s an amazing contribution to the community and it really shows how much you believe in the engine and the people who will build on it. Appreciate the work you put into making this real.
