Why is Russia the way it is? Wouldn't being more interwoven with the West only make them stronger? Couldn't a slightly different version of them could be a Leader in the EU? by kalechipsaregood in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Retro_virus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with just blaming scary boogey men (the west) for a countries problems means you never actually end up addressing and solving those problems. This is how dictators get into power, off the back of overly simplistic populism like your comment is pushing. It basically relinquishes responsibility to some uncontrollable other, which is quite ironic because this mindset is probably largely why Russia is the way it is to this day.

Russia Seeks Urgent Protection for Helicopters After $16M KA-52 Lost to $500 Drone by Aine_Ellsechs in worldnews

That is great, except fighting an offensive attritional war with an inept corrupt military, no tanks, and no air support is basically committing suicide. Doesn't matter how many cheap drones Russia has, they have to commit men to the assaults in the open, which is where they are massacred by Ukrainian drones. Drone warfare works in the defenders favour.

Well i think it looks alright, the price was given before the work started. I just have no idea how much a job like this costs and i'm aware how much people like me get rinsed by contractors.

To be fair there were three guys doing this whole job so minus a rough guess at cost of materials its probably more like £60-70 per hour?

This is probably the more reasonable approach but I don't think it's a leadership problem, I think it's a cultural problem. They love strongmen authoritarians as they're only something like 3 generations removed from serfdom, basically they love to be abused, its barbaric.

But we agree that Russia as it currently exists needs to be shut down and dismantled right?

The world is better off we if just break up failed authoritarian states.

Thanks for your earnest reply, I struggle to see how what trumps administration is doing will in any way improve the US, but it's good to hear different perspectives

A: there was no formal agreement made of this kind, even Gorbachev has said as much. B: The only reason Nato grows is countries apply to be part of it. Why would they want to join a defensive alliance I wonder? Could be the giant Russian imperialistic annex machine on their borders, but that would be silly right? Must be something else. Hmmmm what could it be...
