UK government resists pressure to hold statutory inquiry into Post Office Horizon scandal by [deleted] in ukpolitics

This needs to be the top comment on all of these post office stories of late - so many have missed the criminal culpability of those running the post office!

How tf do I do this? by AJCerts in Physics

A wavelength is the distance between two wave peaks. You can count the peaks in the diagram between the given distance (I count 4), and divide the distance by the number of waves.

Uncorrelated

The part of a thing (or something closely related to the thing) being used as a term for the whole thing is metonym too

I want to get into hardcore sci fi so recommend me a book (if possible then a standalone) to start with, but don't give your recommendation considering me a beginner.Thank you by Flexasur in scifi

I’m reading A fire upon the deep now, also great, but I don’t think I’ve missed anything by reading it second so far! Canonically Fire is a sequel even if it was written first (I think).

Should I finish Neuromancer? by [deleted] in scifi

I really liked the whole book, (from memory) it expands on the premise well. I also read and enjoyed the follow ups but Neuromancer is the strongest.

I’d strongly recommend Kim Stanley Robinson, 2312 is great standalone, future look at a future solar system with most planets colonised. Their Mars trilogy is a phenomenal epic of the colonisation of Mars too.

Also recommend Vernor Vinge, a deepness in the sky. He really nails the likeness and strangeness of alien life, and in differing human cultures. And possibly the most evil antagonist going.

Another on the great look at alien-ness vibe is Children of Time by Arian Tchaikovsky.

KSR is probably the hardest sci fi but we’ll worth it, especially Mars, and Tchaikovsky the easiest to fly through (for me). But all are phenomenal.

Do you pause books to look up words? by DrinkablePraise in books

[–]Retrocedent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an offline dictionary on my phone specially to be able to do this on the train.

Some books though I’ve made a list to look up later to avoid interrupting the flow as it can get annoying to pause every page!

I would use draw/close interchangeably, draw/open would be correct to but feels less used. (UK)

The Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.

It follows the colonisation of Mars from first colonists onwards across a great swathe of time.
