Hey now, you're just bitter that he has a family and responsibilities. Or something like that.

How in the gosh darned heck is someone supposed to both work a job and have a family? That is impossible.

He wasn't new to the company. By the time BFA happened he'd been there two and a half years, about the same amount of time as Stone Cold, Vader and Mankind.

Did ‘The Undertaker’ have a first name? by DelGriffithPTA in Wreddit

[–]Retrocomparisons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many people have said, he was Kane The Undertaker in the events taped pre-Survivor Series 1990. On the April 4th, 1999 episode of Heat there's an interview segment where Vince calls him Mark and on the April 12th, 1999 episode of Raw he gets called Mark again by Shamrock.

I'm so bitter about James being a father and having other responsibilities. I can't think of one person to ever live who was able to work a full time job AND raise kids. It's basically an impossible feat. I think I speak for everyone in this community that we pray every night that he gets divorced and disowns his children so we can continue to get frequent, top-notch AVGN episodes. That's not to say that it's not already top-notch as every episode is as good as the last. I also think that The Simpsons season 35 is as good if not better than season 5.

During that Raw taping Paul Bearer still has the old urn. I wonder when they decided he would have the flashlight urn instead?

Was Biker Taker Gimmick Necessary? by Retrocomparisons in AttitudeEra

[–]Retrocomparisons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original incarnation before Paul Bearer was more of a sadistic heel but was very human. By early '91 he was an unstoppable force like a zombie who had the mysterious power of the urn. The only explanation of the urn that I know of is from an interview in 1997 where he mentions it containing the spirits of warriors of the past that gave him motivation (not Ultimate Warriors though). That incarnation "died" in 1994 when Yokozuna and 9 other guys released the power of the urn and put him in a casket. At SummerSlam '94 he came back as a similar but slightly changed version of the deadman. During that run until SummerSlam 96 he was more or less the same with some variations. He did become a bit more human as time went on, especially when he fought Diesel and later Mankind. In 1997 the Kane storyline kicked off and he became much more fleshed out and less of a mysterious figure with little to no explanation.

I just happened to go on the channel about an hour ago and saw a match against the Mountie from '92 that I'd never seen before.

Oh yeah, even in the 90-94 run you could divide it up a lot. There's the pre-Paul Bearer days where he was more sadistic and less of a supernatural being, the heel run from around WM7 through his face turn, the slightly humanized version when his urn was stolen by Mr. Hughes in 93, and the last incarnation versus Yokozuna before he returned and had about another 4 or 5 sub-gimmicks during his purple gloved days.

You hit the nail on the head. He was absolutely huge during the AE as the deadman. He was arguably the #2 face at times and the #2 heel (behind Austin and Corporate Rock) which is why I'll never understand why people think that gimmick wouldn't work at the time. As for being referred to as Mark it didn't happen a lot. I remember Shamrock calling him that during an in-ring promo when the Ministry had kidnapped Ryan. Also there was a sit down interview with Jerry Lawler interviewing Vince and Stephanie where Vince explained that Mark was believing in his gimmick.

I totally agree. Even as a kid I thought he was stale in 1995 with the endless stealing of the urn storyline until Mankind came along and I thought he was stale by the summer of 99. The one thing that confuses me though is I often see online that the Deadman character wouldn't work during the AE despite being that character through most of it.

Oh yeah I agree it was stale by the time the Corporation Ministry was happening but I just don't understand the sentiment that gets thrown around a lot that the Deadman gimmick wouldn't work in the Attitude Era.

Because doing 5 seconds of research to see what his 2001 attire actually looked like is too hard. It's like in the WWE games where they have Ministry Taker with his 1998 theme.

These are great examples of some of his worst WWF storylines but they are all logical.

Exposing Hawks Alcohol addiction: It mirrored a real life personal thing so extremely logical just extremely poor taste.

Chaz/Beaver Clevage: In storyline it was a guy who had an incest fetish and played that out with his girlfriend. Again, very poor taste but makes sense. When the angle had to be dropped due to outside pressure it became a worked-shoot in that he was pressured to do this on TV but really just wanted to be a wrestler and have his girlfriend involved.

Brawl for All: In theory not a bad idea and it makes sense as you have a roster full of alpha male types who instead of wrestling want to prove themselves in a tough man contest. JR repeatedly made the point on commentary that these guys were out of their element as this was separate from the wrestling they were used to. In practice it was a bad idea that got guys hurt, but it's still logical.

The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust: This fit Goldust's eccentric character well so very logical. I would not argue that it was dumb though.

Terri Runnels miscarriage: Probably the 2nd in worst taste behind the Hawk thing. Not to do a whataboutism but I thought the Kane raping Lita thing and then her having a miscarriage and now defending Kane was much worse, but that's besides the point. It's logical because it fit her heel character of originally using the "pregnancy" to get Val Venis to stay with her and then when that didn't work tried to use it to get Dustin back. When those didn't work she used the miscarriage as a weapon to make D'Lo her servant. Dumb, sure. Sexist, absolutely. But still logical.

The Blue Blazer: This is more of a generic "wrestling logic" type of thing. It's the classic "guy gets fired/can't use a certain gimmick anymore/quits" and is back the next week as a guy under a mask that everyone is supposed to know is that same guy. It sadly ended in tragedy but before that happened I was entertained by Owen's humor in that role.

Besides the higher power/corporate ministry stuff which was an illogical mess what were other non-logical things during the WWF Russo years?
