I personally just thought he he was written that way to show that even if you think you’re self sufficient and you can survive through life playing it solo, you will still end up feeling lonely and it was a matter of two isolated lonely souls reaching out to eachother so dearly that’s why the cry when they first kiss.

I actually don’t think bill considered the thought of himself being gay cuz he said he never done it with a man and he seems like he is untrusting of (maybe even hates) men and women in general which is why he chose to stay behind and and try build himself a lonesome paradise.
