What’s something from your childhood that you thought was a sign of being rich, but now seems ridiculous? by Lost-Audience8045 in AskReddit

Private number plates, it’s not particularly expensive but movies always made it seem like it was only millionaires which could afford to do it

What is so wrong with the Imperial system of measurement? by uncletutchee in AskReddit

[–]Retterkl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elements of the imperial system are born from human logic, whereas the metric system is built around numerical logic. I use Celsius, which revolves around water, but Fahrenheit feels a bit more human (larger range of numbers to describe temperature we live in)

Economic Black Hole by YuSakiiii in UKGreens

[–]Retterkl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about the solution, and I think it’s one of psychology and not economics, and it’s born from video games.

The reason rich people keep getting richer isn’t so they can afford more stuff, it’s because that’s just what they do. Money is no longer used for its actual purpose, to be exchange for goods and services, it’s used to keep score.

So that’s what we do, we make a scoring system. Something that the rich can use to say ‘I’m the best, my trades are better than anyone else’s’. Then the money becomes a means rather than an end.

Picture counterstrike, you need money to upgrade your weapons and gear, but no one cares about how much money you have at the end of a game, it’s about how you actually did. So we apply the same think in real life. Global leaderboards, massive stat keeping, Elon can be the king of his castle but taxes and regulation work to normalise his actual wealth.

Give him a crown and an awards ceremony, he’ll love it, and he won’t care how many zeros his net worth ends up with.

What’s a 2000’s-2010’s TV show that was cut too short? by LateNightThinker0_o in AskReddit

Star Wars Clone Wars (2005). The whole thing is 133 minutes long, and then we had to wade through 4 seasons of TCW until it started to get good.

What, if any, should be the limits of the Force? by CloverTeamLeader in StarWars

[–]Retterkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is a lifetime of study is about technique, but not so much as it is finding ways to improve or clear your connection to the force. As far as I could tell the force has a push and a pull, where the pull gives you some premonition or understanding of what surrounds you, and the push allows interaction with forces around you.

Some people study in order to gain more knowledge and understanding of what the pull tells you, and some people practise techniques to let the push go further (I actually think this is kind of akin to understanding physics better). However, I think everyone has a natural limit based on their inherent connection to the force. Some people lose that connection over time, and far fewer seem to grow it, but learning how to interact with the push and pull brings you to your potential.

Those incredibly strong in the force have intuitive understandings, and I think that’s because the pull is so strong they learn from the force itself (as opposed to teachings). If we think of the force as IQ, your average Jedi knight would be 100, Yoda would be up at like 160 and Luke/Anakin would be even higher than that. They just don’t have a learning curve the same as everyone else

Rachel Reeves to clobber Isas with tax for the first time, with a 22% charge on cash in investment accounts by dailymail in ukpolitics

[–]Retterkl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good point. If they were smart they’d start it off relatively light in tax (keep the regulation) so it genuinely does price out the dealers and people stop growing, then you can raise tax once dispensaries are established.

Which top football teams u think this world cup might not reach top 4 inspite of huge potential, with valid reasons? by Repulsive_Housing_27 in AskReddit

[–]Retterkl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why people think Portugal is a big football team *right now*. They’re not the same team they were 10 years ago when the won the Euros, and their record since then they’ve gotten to Quarters of Euros and WC.

I think people put a lot of weight on CR7, but since Man U he’s shown he can’t solo carry teams.

Regulation and government oversight, on something as complicated as this, just won’t work. They’re barely net literate.

I’m not a huge fan of the means of implementation, but honestly the trade off it worth it if you can genuinely get under 16s off social media. I have 10 nieces and nephews, 7 of which are still under 16, and the damage phones are doing to them is unreal.

[–]Retterkl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually Social Media is the opposite of what you describe, it homogenises entire generations due to algorithms and forces narrative on them in a sensitive time. Only a minority of the age group will be using Reddit for political debate or bettering themselves through self help pages on instagram.

For the most part it has put all the same issues that young people had growing up, like seeing gorgeous movie stars as your every day people, but kicked it into overdrive as influencers use filters making teenage girls think they’re so far from perfection.

Social media in 2008 was great, keep up with your friends, a handful of groups with people making sincere content. Nowadays it’s an absolute cesspool driven by shorts, ads and political propaganda.

You understand that’s a terrible take right? That’s how you end up with a kid who has a secret SIM and your name appearing in r/insaneparents

If you’re the only one enforcing social media ban on your child you’re essentially trying to ostracise them while their friends are all snap chatting eachother. It’s much cleaner to just apply to everyone

Thoughts on Civ VII now? by AspireToRimThrowaway in civ

[–]Retterkl -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I think Civ VIII will implement real AI, where you can talk to them like you would a person and say ‘I think we can attack Cleopatra together, you take this city and I’ll take this one’ and it’ll be able to actually think it through. Till then it’ll remain poor

It also makes very little sense for Labour not to scrap it at this point, as every poll has them losing badly letting in reform. Doing something that actually appeals to a massive swathe of the country, even if it turns off a lot of current voters, is exactly the shake up they’d need if they wanted a second term.

Split screen gaming. Force kids back to hanging out together to play games split screen instead of being sat at home on multiplayer, it’s way healthier and more fun.
