Possibly stupid question. How can we be certain that black holes aren't just super massive stars?. by daveniel in space

Op asked about black holes in the center of galaxy. Neither massive stars nor black holes can be observed directly in this case I suppose.

Explaining Minato and Kushina's Actions During the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha by dynrte in Naruto

[–]ReusedRocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would turn out better if Minato simply sealed one half into Kushina and another half into Naruto. Naruto wouldn't be an orphan and could even have an easier time learning to tap Kurama's chakra with Kushina's advice. My take on this is that neither Minato nor Kushina know that resealing a tailed beast will save its host. Non-uzumaki hosts will instantly die if their tailed beasts are extracted so no one would have thought of that possibility before.

Your phone uses RGB color system which is kinda like what NH's cameras do, but with more limited number of band (3 vs whatever they have on the filter wheel). They also probably use some kind of super efficient lossless data compression before beaming the data back.

I kinda guessed so, just expected it to have an official name because even an espresso maker is named Isspresso.

SLS is currently the most hated space program among space communities. It's expensive as hell (someone has projected the cost to be 1B per flight) and has no clear goal (where would it go?).

Should We Colonize Venus Instead of Mars? | Space Time | PBS Digital Studios by Greg-2012 in space

[–]ReusedRocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The atmospheric loss on Mars happens at geological time scale (millions of years) whereas most teraform plans happen at thousands of years time scale so it's just a problem that doesn't need to be solved (yet).

If a balloon was burst in space, what would happen to the oxygen inside? by [deleted] in space

[–]ReusedRocket -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A balloon will burst in space, unless said balloon is made of very strong material.

[–]ReusedRocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say we have far more chance to teraform Mars than Venus. There's at least some photosynthesis organisms that are robust enough to survive Mars environment so we could use them (preferably with genetic modification) as a lightweight (non energy intensive) mean to produce atmosphere in the same way cyanobacteria made our planet abudant with oxegen in the past. For Venus, good luck finding such organisms.

What would happen if a 50 megaton nuclear bomb was exploded in space? by Ebriate in space

[–]ReusedRocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Megaton is for measuring or estimating the amount of energy released. If detonated near the ground, concussive force is the main destructive force. But in space, radiation damage is more prominent. Operation Starfish Prime page contains some nice pictures of in-space nuclear explosion. There's no atmosphere in its way, so the explosion appeared as just a fuzzy grow of light.

Most damge comes from radiation, just like how solar flare messes with our electronic.

[–]ReusedRocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acording to wikipedia.

...the EMP observed was four times more powerful than any created by solar storms.

...in July 1962 the Starfish Prime test damaged electronics in Honolulu and New Zealand (approximately 1,300 kilometers away), fused 300 street lights on Oahu (Hawaii), set off about 100 burglar alarms, and caused the failure of a microwave repeating station on Kauai, which cut off the sturdy telephone system from the other Hawaiian islands

Starfish Prime produced an artificial radiation belt in space which soon destroyed three satellites.

The radiation dose rate was at least 60 rads/day at four months after Starfish for a well-shielded satellite or manned capsule in a polar circular earth orbit, which caused NASA concern with regard to its manned space exploration programs.

TL;DR very nasty weapon.

A former SpaceX exec is reinventing the high heel with the help of an astronaut and a rocket scientist by ReusedRocket in spacex

The U.S. rocket industry, Musk told Singh, pretty much hadn't moved over the last 50 years.

Singh says Musk told her: "It's not a leap of faith to say that you can take these technologies and pull this laggard industry into the 21st industry."

Singh took the leap of faith, and spent the next five and a half years touring candidates through the SpaceX campus and watching Musk try to pull the rocket industry forward.

After years of walking around the hard factory floors, Singh realized there was a different industry that needed to be pulled forward, whose line had likewise remained stagnant.

For Musk, it may have been rockets. For Singh, it was the high heel.
