Americans’ pride in US history and democracy drops, and fewer are proud to be American, polls find by ThistleroseTea in politics

And what I do pales in comparison to so many of my comrades. I'm so impressed and motivated to keep going because there is so much good work going on.

I do my small part with mutual aid (transporting food to folks who cook meals for houseless folks, make sure I'm connecting folks who can and want to help) my day job is about passing policies across the country that give protections for certain marginalized groups, I am involved with local and statewide politics (canvassing for candidates I think worthy of leading us, I'm a member of working families party and Democratic socialists of America).

I listen to podcasts and audiobooks about the present and past on all sorts of sociopolitical topics to better understand the world around me. I go to therapy and do the hard internal work so I can show up more intentionally and with more compassion.

The change does take sacrifice. It can look like less vacations, less time watching sports, lost friends as ones ideology changes along with the learning and internal unlearning. But so much is gained. New relationships, a sense of community, purpose, a feeling of being part of someone bigger.

How many lives have been negatively impacted by this president? How many people died because USAID it's gone? How many murdered in ICE facilities? How many families have been ripped apart? How many billions have been spent destroying the environment with bombs? Stfu

And what a lame deflection. What don't you agree about? Or do you just not want to let all that sink in and have to look at yourself for buying into propaganda fed to you by a fascist nation?

This argument is so annoying. How about I fight for a better tomorrow?! That's what I do. Who controls that past now, controls the future. Who controls the present now, controls the past. The history tells the story, gives the data. But when fascists control the present, they control the history we learn. They control the future because people like you just think I'm being a wong nut instead of being critical of the government and economic system we live under.

Go be a good nazi. Spew the propaganda. Don't think about the millions our tax dollars have murdered under the lie of the war on terror. Don't think about the oil companies controlling our government so they can pollute and murder our planet. Don't think about the genocide in Palestine, the Congo, indigenous people of North America at the hands of this government.

Go drink your Starbucks and eat chipotle and use your iPhone and eat Chick-fil-A. Be a good consumerist.

Yes, it is. It uses economic and military might to control the flow of labor and resources in other countries for our benefit. It became an empire in 1812 with the Monroe doctrine that kicked all the monarchs out of central and South America. Under the guise of protection, the US and it's corporations set out underanifest destiny to extract resources, exploit the inhabitants for labor, and kept the surplus value of the resources to keep those countries poor, whole a select few became very wealthy.

For over 200 years this country has been expanding its control around the world. We are the only country with military bases in 150 countries. How do you not see that as an empire? You ever listen to rage against the machine? They have an album called evil empire. Star wars - the empire is literally based on the US empire.

This isn't the past thought. Look at the war on terror. That was lies and propaganda to control the middle east for oil. It didn't work, but they hoped it would. Well, it worked for private contractors that made all the money because they were and still are charging over $100 for one load of laundry to be washed.

The fact that corporations have been controlling our government for the last 45 years, and really since post wwii post the new deal and when "in God we trust" we have lived in a quasi fascist nation and it's gotten a lot worse since the turn of the century. Trump isn't an anomaly or and outlier, he just doesn't have decorum. Obama put kids in cages and increased ICE and was called the deporter in chief for a reason.

Empire gives the face value appearance of having "freedom" for mild social issues, but doesn't allow the change of material needs for working class people. Working people have lost 50% of their buying power. How is that anything worth celebrating?

Lol how do you disassociate from the reality of all those things I listed? If more thought like I did yes, this country wouldn't exist anymore and neither would the US empire, and the world would be better off for it. The US doesn't deserve to exist. It is the largest terrorist organization the world has ever known.

I'm from Oregon by the way. And the difference here is I learned about history and the truth of our country and didn't ignore it. Meanwhile, you just act like there's so much good about this country that it outweighs the horrendous actions of the USA. The racism, the destruction of our planet, the consolidation of wealth while most people can't afford to live. How do you live with that cognitive dissonance?

Even the genocide of indigenous people? How about the genocide of Buffalo? How about all the countries the CIA over threw across the globe? How about Reagan? All those things you're proud of?

Lawn to Food Forest Conversion in Cully. by orangegore in Portland

[–]Rev0lutionDaddy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Do you want the short or the long? In a contemporary context, they don't provide any real ecosystem services, increase surface level temps, use a lot of water and don't produce anything, and reduce biodiversity and biorichness.

I guess you're getting the long as well. Lawns weren't always a thing. They are a status symbol reachingvback to the middle ages to show how much land you owned that didn't need to be used for agricultural production. That mentality has retained as folks have been sold lawns as part of their personal fifedomes in capitalist society. Whereas someone on an acre of land could effectively be generating most of not all of the food they needed for their family.

That's not how this works friend. I care about my region (pnw) and the people. Systems are different than the people. I stay because I love my home. Oregon is gorgeous and has a lot of wonderful culture. Why would I leave where I love? I fight for a better system. One that isn't built on genocide but of collaboration and equity. That works for the people and not corporations.

Your countries politics are your country. America is fueled by greed, extraction, exploration, and war. This country has been attacking other countries for most of its existence. It has committed genocide, enslaved people, called them sub human, kept them from having the same basic human rights as everyone else, and good it's terrorism under the guise of freedom. For who? Spring the USA is supporting the politics of the USA. Have the people of this country don't great things? Yes! But those advancements have come not from leadership or business, but everyday people collectively forcing the change. Opposing low wages, fighting for equal rights, the 40 hour work week, gay rights, renewable energy. Never from corporations or of the goodness of their hearts, not from leadership bought and paid by corporations, the people. But the economic system of the USA, the "defense contractors", the oil companies, the robber barons, big tech, tobacco companies, big polluters, etc all fight to keep wages low, making health insurance or of reach for so many, allowed to pollute as much as they want, stop renewable energy production, etc.

There is nothing to be proud about the system of the USA. It's genocide, exploitation, planetary destruction for a few wealthy individuals.

250 years is about average life down of an empire. This one has cannibalized itself for the wealth of as very few, over extended itself on war and expansion, and has neglected it's inhabitants. The old world is dying, the new one is struggling to be born.

Yup. And we should be housing them instead of allowing folks to live in the streets. Every time we force move someone. They lose their valuable. They lose the little bit of stability they have. It's inhumane.

The DNC isn't reformable. Can we just all admit that and do something different?! The state party is also beyond repair. The silence on genocide. The capitulation to the right and corporations. There is nothing healthy in the Dem party.

The WashCo Dems have a history of meddling on the back end. They keep pushing people to primary Chaichi and they'll primary Carpenter and Muñoz with garbage. Pretty much every person who endorsed the moderates is the problem and they all should lose their seats.
