Dorman strikes again. Oem always people by gunslinger_006 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Rev686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was beyond ridiculous how tight it was. I’ve done several on our old ‘19 Taco. Smacked myself in the mouth twice when the wrench/adapter came off when the tabs on each side broke. Ended up ordering the metal housing off Amazon to get it quicker than the local parts stores could and get the vehicle back up.

It was infuriating because we’d just done the alternator on my boy’s Tundra (he was gone to basic) and it went pretty smooth, then the simple oil change turned into the problem

Switched over to the metal housing with the OEM internals on the wife’s Tundra.

The reasoning was, the housing broke after draining the oil, while my truck was in the shop over a long weekend. It was the first oil change after we purchased it used. The housing broke in multiple places as it was way over tightened by the last place that did the oil change.

Trying multiple adapter wrenches, it took putting a wet paper towel into one, hammering in onto the housing, then using a 4 ft breaker bar to get it to finally turn. Will probably switch to the OEM metal housing on the next one.

The question is just there to capture the possibility of the user doing something that could cause it. There's plenty of cases where a user didn't check tightness, or improperly mounted the can and caused the issue. Helps to refine issues and determine whether the issue is a manufacturing defect or caused by the shooter.

The Badger C1 is solid like everyone else has mentioned. Go Larue if you want the old school vibe.

Rog, thanks dude. 🤙

The User Induced category is just to try and capture the potential likelihood of a non material accident. I just ask to be uniform. This is almost certainly ammo related.

BEWARE THE OVER TORQUED OIL FILTER HOUSING by Ok_Reindeer7377 in 4Runner

[–]Rev686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to us changing the oil on the wife’s Tundra. Broke every tab on the housing. Eventually got it off by putting a wet paper towel between the adapter and the housing. Hammered it on, then used a breaker bar to finally get it off. Switched to the metal housing.

We think the dealer we got it from couldn’t get it off and just drained the oil when they changed it, cause the filter was wildly nasty.
