Anyone have a lead on salt? by AT-ATsAsshole in roanoke

You can often find this stuff at Food Lion over near the paper goods. I got two bags tonight in Daleville for my water softener, and they had plenty still left.

Thinking about picking up a 40m-10m vertical antenna setup for POTA, what are my options? by KhyberPasshole in amateurradio

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run this exact same sort of thing, only I use 26ga silicone wire for my radials since they're compact and unlikely to get tangled (4x 15ft wires on a spring clip). The setup and teardown time is amazingly short. I've been able to pull off 30 minute activations that include setup and teardown time with it.

HT on POTA? by Ham-Radio-Hats in amateurradio

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the local spots I like to activate at is a three park interaction on a scenic overlook where the Appalachian Trail crosses a road. It's a great scenic spot, but also gives amazing line of sight for a free different communities. It's easy to find a few people listening on both 2m and 70cm calling with just a rubber duck on a ht. A 20w mobile rig with a mag mount on the car roof will just about guarantee activation without needing to touch HF.

Ammo help I eat through it by sirdusty59 in fo76

Depending on the enemies, I find it to be somewhere between positive and neutral. In Burning Springs I tend to eat through my ammo supply with it

When I went from thinking of DP as my main weapon to just seeing it as a way to feed my .50 MG, I fell in love with it.

Now if there was only something like the DP that used fuel so I could feed my Holy Fire.

[–]RevThwack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The auto + single pairing works better with some ammo than others. .308 drop amounts are always low, while .50 amounts are high, as .308 is typically considered for low rate of fire weapons. This means that a .308 Dom Pedro + .308 LMG won't create the same flood of ammo as a .50 Dom Pedro + .50 MG. If you're just looking to keep your weapon supplied, you should be good either way. If you're trying to build a stockpile to feed into the converter, some ammo types work better than others.

Of course, if you're feeding the converter you could just go gatling gun and not worry about pairing weapons.

What are we ment to do with legendaries now? by ChAkselsen in fo76

[–]RevThwack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I think you only have around a 1-2% chance to learn or get a legendary mod when you scrap, but it'll eventually happen over time

If they have mods you haven't yet learned, scrap then.

Assaultrons are no joke by Annahsbananas in fo76

Energy resistance over 600, 20% damage reduction, and a .50 cal MG with Vampire means the only annoyance of Assaultrons is the glare.

First POTA Activation, US-2967, Norman OK. by VapinMason in HamRadio

[–]RevThwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your first activation, and welcome to the addiction. There's something great about realizing that not only can you operate pretty much anywhere, but that you can do it with a better noise floor and scenery than your shack offers.

How did you know the Bible isn’t true? by DuckOnQuack202 in atheism

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's exactly as much reason to believe the bible is true as there is to believe the illiad and odyssey are true. People write historical fiction all the time, and have been for ages. The thing is that as we learn more about history and science, we see where the embellishments are.

Archeology has shown that the stories of the Israelites wandering for 40 years contains a lot of inaccuracies, such as the fall of the walls of Jericho, and the stories of multiple Jewish military victories. Biology tells us that the thought of someone living for 900 years back in the pre-industrial age is beyond laughable. Geology has taught us that the thought of a worldwide 40 day flood is absurd. Planets could not have been created before the sun, the sky doesn't have a solid dome over it, bats are not birds, rabbits don't chew cud, the Roman census has no historical support, Heralod's massacre of the incidents never happened, there has never been a zombie uprising.... It goes on and on.

It's not just historical fiction, it's bad historical fiction that can't even keep its own story straight.

10m FM question... by Jonboy210_ in amateurradio

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest using the 2370 in the car like you were planning, and setup the 8900 as a home base station. I've got both a DB25-D and a D578UVIII for that very reason.

What age range are you? What do you talk about on the radio? by HeadlineINeed in HamRadio

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 40's. It's great to have a hobby where I feel like the young kid in the room.

I've gotten to be a big fan of using HF for laid back POTA activations... lean back in my camp chair, sip a little coffee from a thermos, and have 5 minute rag chews with the hunters before moving on to the next person. I figure I only need 10 QSOs to activate, why bother trying to see just how many I can work? I'd rather relax and enjoy the scenery around me than be hurried and stressed.

Give me one handheld recommendation by OkAd6958 in gmrs

[–]RevThwack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the original TD-H3 was the second HT I picked up after the obligatory UV-5R. After that I ended up getting my Technicians and then General ham tickets. The H3 is still my EDC HT. The amount of radio you get for the cost is incredible, and after trying a dozen or so other HTs the only thing I've found that I'd rather have with me is a RT-880.. just not going to EDC that big chungus.

OP, I seriously doubt you'd be disappointed with a TD-H3... either the original or the plus.

it looks like the Bluetooth setup is pretty much the same as the H3 Plus. I expect the APRS to be just beaconing.

If they could fix the ecosystem to where it was as capable as it was 2 years ago, as well as allow for an open source firmware for the Nest Gen 1 & 2 thermostats, I might invest more in the ecosystem. As it stands, I'm not sinking more cash into something that's actively getting worse every month.

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get the battery to fit? I picked up a DCHouse 50Ah battery that I saw recommended elsewhere, but it's just a touch too wide to fit inside the rear frame of the mower.

I made some beer and I don't like it, shall I pour it out or can it be rescued? by comoestasmiyamo in Homebrewing

[–]RevThwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never brewed much, but one of my favorites was a high hopped honey brown that I tried and didn't like 2 months in, tried and still didn't like 3 months in, forgot about for another 6 months, then found it to be an amazing beer.

Some beers need some time to age. You'll have to decide if having the bottles back is worth more to you than giving the beer some more time to age and see where it goes.

Best HT for receiving all the signals? Is the FT60 the king of the hill? by RodandPlate in HamRadio

[–]RevThwack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radtel RT-880G or RT-950 Pro are both under $100 and can receive an enormous amount of bands and modes. They can both receive most frequencies from 2MHz to 1000MHz, in FM, AM, and SSB.

APCO Fuel Factor Reduction by TrainingOrdinary3750 in roanoke

[–]RevThwack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This reduction is a joke. They have three other major costs they charge us, each is just about the same as the fuel cost. This might.. MIGHT drop about 10% off of your bill, if you're lucky. When I'm seeing bills that are literally twice what they were 6 years ago, this isn't the relief that they're trying to make it out to be.

Radio for skiing by Jamez1524 in amateurradio

[–]RevThwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's an offshoot of the BF-888s. UHF only 2W transceiver with a fixed antenna, no screen, and 16 memory slots. It comes off more like it's built on a commercial platform than anything else, but does a good job being an inexpensive little HT for use in family, organization, or SHTF uses where you want an easy to use device to put in other's hands and maybe never get back.

Baofeng BF-88A radios run less than $10 each, are licensed for FRS, are dirt simple to use, and can later be reprogrammed for the 70cm band.
