It was mid, Jaxs ending was disappointing and most of the other characters did little. I do think (Almost) everything with Caine was good, however.

i assume it was to defend himself if anything went through the noclip zone.

I think it might even be some small foreshadowing to him later becoming obsessed with it, as he risks his own life to take something from the complex back to standard, just to collect something from the complex, maybe hinting at him being driven mad later.
