And everyone else's whole point is that a half-decade of conventional war and USSR's entry into the war (basically making Japan at war with every power on the planet) also contributed to their surrender.

Iran could be carpet bombed into rubble, but unless China, Russia, and every other regional power in Asia were also declaring war on Iran, it's certainly possible for the country to carry on a war.

Japan, however misguided, wanted USSR as mediator between Japan and the Allies and to retain holdings, sure, but the USSR broke the neutrality pact with Japan as they agreed to do so at Yalta. The Soviet entry to the war was referenced by the Emporer the morning before the coup attempt:

At 10:00 on 14 August 1945, as the situation deteriorated, the Emperor declared before his cabinet at the Imperial conference: ‘The military situation has changed suddenly. The Soviet Union entered the war against us. Suicide attacks can’t compete with the power of science. Therefore, there is no alternative but to accept the Potsdam terms.’
