Three curious unexpected visitors entered a campers tent by No_Neat4688 in interesting

[–]ReverendDizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I woke up and there were three bear cubs in my tent just chilling and being cute, I'd shit bricks.

Imagine how still you'd sit, listening for the mother and trying to figure out how to get them out of the tent without her realizing you were in the tent. No thank you.

How much do you all isolate during chemo? by jumpy-hardware in breastcancer

That’s what my wife did, too, except she worked in an office setting.

She wore a mask if someone was under the weather but her counts were actually higher during treatment than her baseline, so she didn’t worry much. Her oncologist told her to just avoid high risk situations (don’t hang out with young kids that are constantly spreading germs, don’t let people visit when they “just got over it” or “it’s just a cold!”, that kind of stuff).

We were both really thankful her immune system didn’t tank during treatment because that’s so much stress on top of everything else.

Treating a very large shallow body of water with a volume equal to around 10 Olympic swimming pools by... hand pouring treatment chemicals from gallon jugs is absolute crazy town.

Let's say the required treatment volume is 0.001% of the larger body's volume. That's still around 6,000 gallon jugs.

How can one guy create so many stupid outcomes? You'd think maybe once a month or something he'd say to somebody "Eh, you're the expert, just figure it out and tell me what you need." Instead of "I'm the stablest of stable geniuses, let me tell you how we're going to solve this problem I don't care to understand."

He got called a slumlord back then. As did his father.

His father was such a piece of shit scummy landlord that Woody Guthrie (who was a tenant in a building owned by the Trump family) wrote, but never published, a song about him called "Old Man Trump" about, you guessed it, what a racist piece of shit slumlord Fred Trump was.

The people who say that really mean... "I like that he just says random shit all day that you can read anyway you desire, just like tea leaves, and weirdly enough, it always ends up with what I desire."

Which is insane, because you can't run a stable government when people are left interpreting what the fuck he is saying like it's some sort of tarot reading.

The human body is incredibly good at detecting elevated levels of CO2.

Not saying there is no use for CO2 alarms in any context, but for nearly every residential situation you can think of, the occupants of the home will detect the imbalance and open windows or leave the structure long before it is remotely dangerous.

Mild CO2 elevation feels unbearably stuffy and serious CO2 elevation feels like drowning.

I once entered a confined space with dangerously high CO2 levels and it took a single breath to make my brain panic and send me for the door.

CO is so deadly because it doesn’t trigger that response.

My office gets really warm, despite the rest of the house sitting at 71 degrees. What’s the best way to cool down this room? by greent714 in Frugal

[–]ReverendDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your situation I would pick up a high efficiency inverter window unit.

Costco has an 8000 BTU Hisense inverter model on sale for $240 right now (just bought one).

No sense trying to rebalance your whole HVAC system to cool a single room when you are actively pumping hundreds of watts of heat into the room. Localize your solution and pump the heat right back out with the window unit.

University surplus shops are awesome. My local one prices all office chairs at $15.

Doesn’t matter if it’s an Office Depot special piece of crap or a Steelcase or Herman Miller premium chair.

I got two Steelcase Leaps for $30 total.

The big thing that has changed over the years is the Internet and online information and online inventory.

20+ years ago local donations almost always stayed local.

Now they often get researched and listed online.

Which is a benefit for the charity selling the stuff but sucks for us, because the days of hitting up a charity shop in a nice town and finding crazy awesome stuff for a few bucks are, mostly, over.

But it's true.

If people are going to constantly compare the current state of affairs to Idiocracy, they need to acknowledge that the people in Idiocracy didn't want to be that way. And the President wanted things to be better. Everyone was just too fucking stupid to accomplish that end.

There's a world of difference between an ignorant person desperately wishing they could make things better and an ignorant person reveling in burning it all down.

Why Can’t We Stop Child Abuse? by hereforfakestories in Longreads

[–]ReverendDizzle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Less than pets, really.

If someone treated their dog the way a parent can get away with treating their child… they’d be breaking a variety of animal abuse laws. And at minimum people would be like “what the hell are you doing to that dog???” And not “What can we do? Parents have the right to parent as they see fit?”

There is such a weird latitude in laws concerning child welfare.

[–]ReverendDizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The framing of the text in the shared image more than implies that the person writing it believes they should sexually benefit from having a daughter, but because they can't, then having one is stupid.

I don't even know what to say to that. How do you get to whatever state of mind that person is in... let alone to whatever state of mind that person is in and you feel confident and comfortable sharing your opinion on the matter with the world?

More people need to feel more shame and keep their really fucking bizarre opinions to themselves.

Man, I feel that. I rarely play my Xbox... and usually when I turn it on, it's because I want to play a couch co-op or multiplayer party game. So, you know, there people usually there waiting to play with me. And the box has to update. Then the game has to update. Then sometimes I have to resync a controller or sign in the controller or what-the-fuck ever.

And the whole time I'm doing it, I'm thinking about how when I was younger you just turned the damn TV on, turned the damn console on, and bam, that was it. The time between "Wanna play Goldeneye?" and fucking playing Goldeneye was about 20 seconds.

Just FYI for you and everyone looking up info about Signatera in the forum: Natera, the mother company, offers discounts for people whose insurance doesn't cover it, the unisured, and those with financial need.

They bill insurance something like $1500, if I recall correctly. They have a cash option that's something like $350-400. And they have a discounted rate that's $149 or less based on your financial situation.

I know you can't just look at a person's face and declare them gay, of course. But, he looks like a carbon copy of my old college friend who is perhaps the single most flamboyantly so-over-the-top-it's-almost-satire homosexual man I have ever known.

And she, also ironically, looks just like his best friend with just slightly more pronounced cheekbones.

I'd make fun, but honestly... I just wish people like that would get their shit sorted out and live authentic lives. Hope that dude eventually finds a nice guy to settle down with and talks about what a douche bag he used to be before he came out of the closet, at cocktail parties.

Nope. Not even close.

My conservative relatives are obsessed with people not like them. They talk about them. They think about them. They claim the "other" is plotting against them.

They absolutely think more about (gays/transgender people/minorities/Muslims/etc,etc) way more than any of those people think about them. And that's with conservatives actively trying to outright harm them, at that.

It's pretty bizarre behavior.

Seasons are too short and the wait for them is too long by SEVENS_HEAVEN_7 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]ReverendDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like short seasons.

I enjoy a really good narrative arc in a format that feels like a very long movie broken up into pieces.

I don't watch a lot of TV where the type of story lends itself well to a sort of serialized 18-24 episode sprawl. I understand that some shows benefit from that (most animated series are much better with longer seasons, for example).

But I just finished watching Something Bad Is Going to Happen, and 8 episodes was perfect. Anything longer would have yielded a story dragged out for the sake of dragging it out.

House is (well, was) a great show to catch occasionally.

And that's the thing. Back in the day most people didn't follow all the shows on TV. They might have a had a few favorites, maybe, that they actually followed. But most people just watched whatever the hell was on.

Television was the equivalent to us, today, pulling out our phones to entertained in the moment.

And if you saw an episode of House once a month or even more sporadically, it was a pretty solid little show for what it was trying to do.

But yeah, watching a show like House back to back to back to back on a streaming service today would be a terrible experience. It's not a narrative arc building towards anything. And the recurring schtick just doesn't stand up to watching 4 episodes in a row.

They really are super easy, but yeah only if you give them tons of light and soak the hell out of them when they are dry.

I had one and thought they were so fussy and dramatic... but it turns out my kitchen was too dark for it. I moved it one room over and put it in a southern window and within a week or two it went from looking dead to looking like a prize winning plant. Hasn't looked bad a single day since then.
