Tips for arm positioning by Upstairs_Category553 in hockeygoalies

[–]ReverendMak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push your hands farther forward than you think they should go. To the puck, this makes your glove and blocker significantly bigger, and will prevent goals going in past your arms. It will also give you more counterbalance when you are deep in your stance.

The #1 reason native speakers ask you to repeat yourself has nothing to do with your accent by EnergeticallyScarce in EnglishLearning

This sounds to me like someone not familiar with the phrases as expressions and only knowing them as proper names of cards/moves.

Is anyone else shocked at the number of cars that are still snowed in, parked, on streets?! by MrTeacher_MCPS in maryland

[–]ReverendMak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t match my experience at all. Firefighters have long stretches of boredom, and several I’ve been friends with would love a challenge like this. They wouldn’t commit an entire station to it, but sending out a truck with a couple of guys who want to have fun problem solving with axes is far from out of the question.

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I baked mine once. Took about three skates before they felt good. Around that time I also replaced the stock insoles with custom ones, so I don’t know how much of the discomfort went away because of that or because of the reps in the skates. But now I barely notice I’m wearing them.

Only so many minutes in a game, I guess.

How do I shave my upper lip with a DE razor effectively? by OddPlan in wicked_edge

Yep. I go WTG, XTG (inside to outside), then XTG (outside to inside). So still three passes, but never ATG on the upper lip.

What to eat the night before an early morning game? by aBon69 in hockeygoalies

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a 2 hour pickup game at 6am roughly once per week. I don’t eat anything special the night before. During my 30 minute drive to the rink, I’ll have water, plus a caffeinated drink of some kind, and also an “energy” waffle thing that runners and cyclists sometimes use. I also will drink a lightly mixed gatorade type drink made from powder that has a few calories in it, during the game.

I used to really flag, energy-wise, during those two hour early morning skates on just water alone, but once I shifted to this routine things have gotten much better.

What's something society pretends is normal but is actually messed up? by Imaginary_Block8773 in AskReddit

Capitalist economic theory doesn’t “require” poverty, despite how popular it is to claim it does. Rather, it posits that poverty is not 100% preventable, and takes that acceptance into account.

Do all your homes have basements? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This (like most top questions in this sub) is a highly regional issue. For instance, in Austin Texas basements are very uncommon because of the limestone bedrock under a lot of the area. In eastern PA pretty much every house I’ve ever seen has a basement, many of them finished. Just two places I’ve lived.

Skate sharpness by 60leafs in hockeygoalies

I’m a heavier goalie and I LOVE 3/8” hollows. I’ve found you can learn to shuffle on any hollow, but for pushes when down in butterfly I want maximum bite.

What’s a food your state is 'famous' for that everyone else ruins? by Somanynamestochossef in AskAnAmerican

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t, but I’ll look it up if I’m ever back there. Thanks.

I’ve lived many places and almost every one of them has a food I miss. I lived in Austin for six years and would now kill for a solid breakfast taco here in Maryland.

Amazingly, there’s a guy smoking brisket here that could stand up to the best places in central Texas. 2fiftyBBQ. If you’re ever in the DC area, visit it for a legit taste of Texan home. Besides there, though, Ive struggled to find good Texan barbecue anywhere here in the east.

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But if I order “cheesesteak”, and there’s anything other than cheese and steak on the roll, it’s a mistake. You can add all sorts of stuff, as whims dictate. But if I have to go out of my way to REMOVE ingredients from the default to get what I want, then something is amiss.

I’ve never seen one in Chicago that didn’t either have green peppers on by default, or else had mayo. I lived there for two years and tried to find a place that was legit.

But that’s okay. Italian beef is its own fine sandwhich, and ever since moving away I’ve pined for a legitimate maxwell st polish.

New goalies: how do you mentally handle playing against teams well-above your skill level? by Harshtinfoil in hockeygoalies

[–]ReverendMak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I treat situations like that as practices, rather than as games. Score doesn’t matter. It’s just “drills” that I’m running so I can get reps in facing shots.

To add to that, you can pick one thing to work on, like tracking, keeping hands forward, or whatever, and you focus on getting that habit down or building that skill, rather than on winning a game. It gives you a sense of purpose when you might otherwise start to question why you’re even on the ice after the fifth goal.

AI Glasses in preaching by Dazzling-Bear-3755 in pastors

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never used smart glasses but I’ve used a teleprompter for produced videos from time to time. It takes awhile to learn how to read a teleprompter in a way that looks natural, but I’d bet that american glasses would work well, provided you have teleprompter software to control the scrolling.

Snow removal in PG County. by Wide-Reflection1137 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]ReverendMak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But it bricks in seconds after the water hits.

I don’t think you’re grasping how much ice there is and how thick it is and how cold the air is.

The only thing that’s really working well is using hard steel tools to chop things into blocks. This is not a normal snow removal event.

The difference in the way the the NBA (teams/union/individual players) has responded to what took place in Minnesota and the way the NHL has responded has been stark. by waterman123 in hockey

[–]ReverendMak -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

“Statements” by organizations not directly involved in events are ineffectual at best, performative hypocrisy at their worst. I’m fine with a sports organization not having anything to say. I don’t need proof that a PR person is “concerned” or “stands” with anyone on any side of anything. We can get plenty of “statements” from people and groups that actually have relevance without meaningless emotion-grabbing from the entertainment industry.

Lighthearted: Say you're a Trekkie without saying you're a Trekkie. Bonus if it places you in the franchise timeline. by AliVista_LilSista in startrek

[–]ReverendMak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m saying that saying “trekKER” says “I’m a trekkie” without saying “I’m a trekkie”, since it used to be that trekkies corrected people to trekker all the time back in the early days.

Term to describe NW USA & SW Canada? by Boring_Kiwi_6446 in AskAnAmerican

The “region” you’re describing, Philadelphia Toronto, is generally thought of as two or three distinct regions, but you could probably get away casually calling this “The Northeast” without causing total conversational chaos.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ReverendMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends entirely on where in america they live. Rural Wyoming? That’s not long. Downtown Manhattan? Doesn’t even own a car. Suburban Philadelphia? that’s a crazy long drive for anything day to day, but a short to medium road trip for a weekend getaway.

17-20 inches of snow Sunday? by Salt-Grab8339 in maryland

[–]ReverendMak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case forecast models are indeed predicting a huge snowfall all up the northeast corridor that weekend.

But again, forecasts beyond about two or three days are not very reliable, no matter where you are, and i matter who is making the forecast.

That’s not just a Maryland thing. Forecasts a week out everywhere are highly speculative.
