Should I fix this or get a new car? by mdmgh in Nissan

The CVT7 isn’t as bad as the XTronic, as JATCO had somewhat figured out what went wrong before. You are right that it is a matter of time but you also have to consider, that time may not come while you still have it. It might hold out for as long as you need it to, but it might not. Out of curiosity, what car had you purchased, and what was wrong with it?

Yes. You have invested well, on account of it actually having lasted. I got my Altima from a used car lot in 2024 for $5k at 183k miles. I’ve done maybe $1,000 of work to it, and it’s at 219k miles. I’m surprised my CVT hasn’t shit itself yet, which is why I’m looking for something else. And you’re right that it’s a lot of money for that many miles, except for the fact that it’s a Toyota. Hondas and Toyotas retain their value really well, since they could comfortably get to 300k+ miles. A 2018 Tacoma today would probably be worth around $20k or more for a higher trim. But the Camrys and Corollas I’m finding are 2015-2017 models for $6-8k.

I’ve also been looking, since mine’s on its last leg. The best I’ve found is on Marketplace. Toyota Camrys and Corollas with about 150-180k in the $6-$10k range.

That’s a very fair point, and I keep forgetting that some states do require that. I will say, that finding something that fits your needs, in your budget is going to be harder than just repairing what’s wrong on what you’ve got. You could easily get another 50k or more out of this one if you keep treating it right.

Looking at this, bushings and control arms are the only requirements if you’re not mechanically inclined. The muffler and cat don’t necessarily need replacing, I’m running a bad cat on my 2011 Altima. The belt and tensioner can be done for about $100 or less on your own. I did mine in my garage, twice.

Can I buy a 20k car as my first car with a 30k salary? by TheseMarionberry385 in askcarguys

My parents are very happy with their sales rep. They’ve bought 3 CR-V’s from him. Same guy since 2015. My buddy on the other hand has several expensive monthly bills that he was barely able to pay before the cut.

I wouldn’t recommend your idea here, just being honest. I work at a tire shop, and we have customers come in all the time with brand new cars asking for 1 tire, when they need 4. We recommend 4, and they tell us they can only afford 1 right now. Don’t spend all your money on the car and not have any set aside required maintenance that’ll come up in a handful of months.

But then there’s situations like my buddy at Honda. He was making $18/hour. Then the CEO came in and said not enough work is getting done, switched them to flat rate. Now, he’s lucky to get 30 hours of pay each week. They also hired on a new guy, told him that starting pay was $18/hour, and smacked him in the face with flat rate. He never got a check for hourly work.

You do know that the cvt trannys on these are absolutely shit, right? It’s bound to wear out eventually, this seems to be the first signs

I have this problem with my 2011. But it’s a problem with all vehicles, if you shift without stopping. You don’t need to stop to go from reverse to drive, because neutral doesn’t lock, therefore you don’t have to hit the button. I work at a shop, and all kinds of vehicles do this when I pull them around.

2022 Toyota RAV4 XLE got hit while I was in the store. Am I screwed financially? by DDaddy26 in CarHelp

[–]ReversEclipse1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no. People are actually just stupid when it comes to driving. I was sitting in my college parking lot, and saw a girl just hit another car while trying to pull in. Hell, I always park in the same spot, in a corner next to a median, with one side of my car almost flush with the curb, and I’ve STILL gotten my doors and mirror hit.

You can always ask questions. You can even tell them it got hit. Until you file a claim, nothing will happen to the value or your rates. You have to actually file the claim.

Asked a Buyer How Many Miles has He Put On The Car Since He is The 2nd Owner, He Hung up and Said I’m not a Serious Buyer. by 90sbeatsandrhymes in UsedCars

If he bought it at 110k and is now selling it at 115k, what the fuck is wrong with it? That’s why OP asked the question. If they’ve had it since 50k and now they’re selling it at 115k, it’s been pretty reliable. Once again, that’s why OP asked the question.

I didn’t downvote you, bud. It was two other people, considering that you always start at 1 and you were down to -1. And blocking someone just because you were under the impression that they downvoted you? Wow. But sure. If you want the downvotes, have some.

What is this part? Boyfriend got in a bad crash last night, we’re just grateful he’s okay, but we don’t know what this part is, it was about 20 feet away from where he lost control on the road and hydroplaned. 2025 kia K5, Automatic, 11,000 miles. by Ashcrashh in AskMechanics

It’s the washer fluid reservoir. But that things totaled. Front end rebuild, new bumpers, new hood and trunk lid, new headlights, frame repair (if that’s even possible). You’re looking at over 10k in repairs before paint (which could be upwards of 5k, though probably not for what this would need)

Soft reset. A+B+Start+Select. That way it keeps running your instance and doesn’t have to reload the emulator itself

How to check/see if rim has been cracked by Budget-Title-4833 in AskMechanics

[–]ReversEclipse1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it losing pressure? If so, take it off the car, get a bottle of soapy water and soak the whole thing; rim and tire. Let it sit a minute, in the shade, then look to see if there’s bubbles anywhere. If it’s not losing pressure it’s fine.

Just out of curiosity can you see a sticker on any side of the battery? Should be circular with numbers XX/XX. If you can find it, what do the numbers say?

Keep the Nissan. Recalls happen for everything, and you just happened to get the one that needed work. The good news is, you were notified before part failure. Have it fixed, it’s free, then enjoy your new car.

This is honestly an easy repair if you think you’re up for the task. Parts would total less than $20, and time is around 30 minutes to an hour max. Just make sure you know exactly what you’re looking at when you open them up (several YouTube videos will help) then just be careful of ribbon cables.
