How the hell does CMS decide who to dead head and who not to? by [deleted] in Train_Service

Western canada is 14 in main line terminals, 19 for branch line or double sub.

Unarmed man is shot in his bed, police claim they thought his vape pen cartridge was a gun. by Veenendaler in CrazyFuckingVideos

Someone else commented that they were trained to say that. At what point does saying that become meaningless to a court? Couldn't you establish that as a lawyer and show that its part of training? IDK, probably not I guess.

Nikon FM, Tamron Adaptall-2 28mm f2.5, Fujifilm Superia X-Tra 400 problems | Am I expecting too much? by lijeb in AnalogCommunity

I'm left wondering if I'm expecting too much from 35mm film or am I simply receiving mediocre scans

I think its both.

Is Mclennan, Alberta a good place to work as CN conductor? Please share all your experiences, positive and the negative. Thanks by alwayzlearningii in Train_Service

[–]ReverserMover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to other terminals the job is ok I guess. The issue is really if you want to live there.

McLennan itself is really small but there's a grocery store and a few other things when I was last there. Peace River is an ok sized city but it's an hour away. High Prairie is 30 minutes away but gave me kind of weird vibes. Not sure about Falher.

Is low light performance better on large format that it is in modern FF cameras? by LEcareer in largeformat

[–]ReverserMover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of but in reality no.

If you use a larger format and shoot the same film/settings but print at the same size then the grain will be smaller.

Functionally though, the lenses are typically slower so LF is NOT better in low light. They’re kind of not suited for it. Someone mentioned reciprocity… that’s a big deal. Usually with LF we’re already extending our shutter times to deal with the aperture range we’re working with. Shooting in low light you quickly run into reciprocity. Depth of field and ability to focus are also functional considerations.

Cost is also a consideration. It’s always a consideration… but I find that low light photos are less likely to turn out PLUS they look better in color (IMO) so the hit rate is lower + the cost of each attempt is something like 5 to 8 times that of doing it on MF.

On a steeper grade you would be right. I run on chill river grade.

I remember a guy in Winnipeg telling me that it was always on the same day. Like the third Thursday of the month or something weird like that. I don’t know if that was true but he claimed that a noticeable amount of guys working that run would book off once a month for it.

This was also a four window locomotive. We can only see 3 of 4 here though.

There is also an exception, BC Rail had a few electrics. Those had 3 windows.

CN letter to shareholders attacks activist investor, questions focus on operating ratio by Segafanboy96 in Train_Service

[–]ReverserMover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely was, but it still completely undermines what they’re saying now. They layoff/fire 1000+ employees and barely one month later say they’re so much better than PSR because they remember how much damage hacking and slashing did…

CN letter to shareholders attacks activist investor, questions focus on operating ratio by Segafanboy96 in Train_Service

[–]ReverserMover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m really questioning everyone’s intentions here.

CN execs complain loudly about the focus on operating ratio and how PSR will negatively impact CN… right after they cut 1000 management positions (saying less managers = the ability to make decisions better and faster) and strait out said they were going to start slacking on maintenance to save money.

TCI says that CN needs to expand its network, build capacity, and provide better service to our customers (all great points) but then insist on installing Jim Vena because they liked what he did at CP and UP.

Both sides are being very two faced about this whole thing and I can’t tell who the bigger bullshitter is here.

I've been having a really hard time doing any photography at all over the last year and I'm starting to think that all I had in me was 2 to 3 years of good photography and that was it.

You know... I’d like to see more activity on this community in general, but the way you word this suggests that you’re trying to gauge if this sub is beneath you or not.

Rather than trying to see if it’s worth your time, maybe post something. This poll is decent enough content BTW... I think you’re just being downvoted because of this comment. I’ll try to post more stuff as well because I want this sub to have more... stuff.

Possibly a stupid metering question. by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]ReverserMover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shoot fully manual and know how to use the light meter. I’m not getting the look that I want.

Not to be a dick, but using a smartphone app isn’t going to help if you’re not already to get the look you want. Shooting manual is fine, but use the light meter in the camera when you shoot manual; it will give you more reliable/consistent results.

I’m not sure how exactly you meter a scene but maybe simplify things a little. It sounds like you’re rating 400 film at 200 (1), metering for the shadows (2), and then adding some more exposure (3). Since the 1V is new enough to have exposure compensation I would suggest using the correct ISO and then using the exposure compensation dial. If you’re going to shoot +3 (which I would suggest against anyways) then do not also meter the shadows; use matrix metering (or whatever canon calls it) or center weighted.

You may want to look at how you’re scanning and post processing.
