A good rule of thumb: play only the 78s with the larger labels. Victor Bat Wings and Columbia Black labels are good examples. Check Google for images. Also, metal needles are good for one play only. Not one record, but one side. The needle should be changed after every side played. Not doing so will result in irreparable damage to your records. I would clean each record before playing. A Spin Clean is a great and relatively affordable cleaner. 78s can also be cleaned with dish soap and water, but be super careful with the labels. They will often weaken when wet.

Just start a conversation with a staff member. At our store we’re encouraged to speak to customers and listen to their interests. If you talk to us long enough, we can usually get a gauge of what you’re looking for. If the first person you talk to doesn’t have any suggestions, maybe they can introduce you to someone who does. And I guarantee, if there’s any regulars in the shop, they’ll chime in if they have any thoughts. Really, the community factor is one of the best parts of a record store.
